Mopar’s Father and Son Team Working Towards a Memorable Father’s Day at Bristol

Bristol, TN – This Father’s Day weekend the Mopar contingency will compete in the 13th annual NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol MoparDragway, but for Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson it is anything but an ordinary race weekend.  While he and his Mopar team’s engine builder and father Roy Johnson, have a plethora of good memories at the Greenville, Tenn.-native’s home track, they are hoping to add one more special one this Sunday.

While both men have won sportsman races as drivers at Bristol Dragway and their Pro1 Mopar Dodge Avenger has earned three consecutive No. 1 qualifier honors, a Pro Stock win has eluded them. The father and son team came as close to their first professional win at their home track as is actually technically possible in last year’s final round of eliminations by finishing runner-up to Mike Edwards in the closest finish in NHRA history, a race that was decided by less than .0000 of a second.

There isn’t a car here that isn’t capable of winning this deal, so we’re going to have to be on our toes tomorrow, but with the way this team has been performing this year, I couldn’t be more confident. We’re excited to go racing.”

BRISTOL, TN – John Force and the Castrol GTX Ford Mustang took control on the first day of the 13th annual Ford NHRA Thunder John ForceValley Nationals presented by Tri-Cities Ford Dealers. The 15-time Funny Car champion and three-time Thunder Valley Nationals champion was the quickest Funny Car of the first session and wound up No. 6 at the end of Friday.

“I am gunning for a win on Father’s Day. Courtney (Force) and I are in right now. Robert (Hight) will be OK tomorrow. Those were pretty good numbers and it will be warmer tomorrow. I have no complaints. I watched Brittany (Force) run right down to the end with that 3.82. She stayed in the top half. We went up on the hill together and we were counting cars to see where she would wind up. We went across the tunnel and the fans mobbed us. It was awesome and she loved it. She stays in the top half I think she has a good shot at winning,” said Force.

Hunter Looking to Rebound at Denver’s Thunder on the Mountain

MORRISON, CO – Following a two-month break since his last race, Greg Hunter and his ExactAir Compliance Systems Top Alcohol G Hunter David Smith photoDragster team is eager to return to the competition this weekend. The team has taken a hard look at their tune-up after early exits at the season-opening races at Pomona and Las Vegas. Now Hunter and his Kenny Gilmour Motorsports group want to put their adjustments to the test at the Grease Monkey Thunder on the Mountain Lucas Oil Series regional event and Bandimere Speedway, June 14-16.

“We had some time off after the last race in Vegas. We were a little disappointed with our performance at that race, so we went through everything on the car. I think we learned a few things that should improve our performance at Denver this weekend. We got some good data when we ran here for the first time last year. That should also help us run better than we have all year,” said Hunter, who is racing in his second year in TAD after switching from an alcohol-burning Funny Car.

Danny Rowe Looking to Gain Ground in Thunder Valley

BRISTOL, TN – Danny Rowe certainly earned his Father’s Day gift during the recently completed NHRA Summernationals in Danny RoweEnglishtown, New Jersey, where he qualified No. 1, but missed elimination day when he chose to fly home to California for his youngest daughter’s high school graduation. But now he’s looking to make up lost ground in the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series points chase with a big outing at Bristol Dragway.

“We’re not worried about the points,” says Rowe, checking in from the pits in Thunder Valley, home to one of his personal favorite racing facilities. “The way I look at it is that the situation’s no different now than it ever is – you want to win every race. Nobody is running away with the points, which speaks to how competitive NHRA Pro Mod is right now, so we’re going to take it one round at a time, one race at a time, and let the chips fall where they may.”

PMRA’s Bruce Boland looking to get back to winning ways at upcoming South Coast Community weekend

HAMILTON, ON – Some teething problems with a new car kept Bruce Boland out of contention for the last Pro Modified Racing Association race, but the car and team will be ready for the next round of PMRA action during the South Coast Community Weekend June 21-23 at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.

We were a little too aggressive, Boland said during the previous meet’s test and tune session last month. We were not sure what the new car is capable of.

The new car is a 1963 Corvette-bodied Pro Modified with a supercharged engine courtesy of Engine Research & Development. After competing with the former 1941 Willys for two seasons, the B&B Racing Team believes it has the proper combination in the new Corvette for the next race.
