Meadors, Goodguys Racing Camaro Run Career Best Numbers in Season’s First Outing

Sacramento, CA – The Goodguys Racing Pro Mod ’69 Camaro hit the track for the first time this season over the weekend at Sacramento Raceway Park competition during the 29th annual Funny Car Fever event. Racing in the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod category, driver Marc Meadors instantly felt the performance gains from a brand new combination, unloading a career best 6.19 @ 237mph off the trailer!

The Camaro’s new motor combo (installed over the winter to include “Brad 6” hemi cylinder heads, an Mike Stawicki Racing Performance 60mm camshaft and a MSR hand fabricated sheet metal intake manifold) gave the Goodguys Racing team the additional horsepower to play with.  Competing with a 451-inch Brad Anderson hemi with roots blower has always differentiated the Goodguys Camaro as the bulk of the other competitors in the WCOPM group run 526-inch hemi‘s with screw-type blowers.

Tommy D’Aprile’s Wild Ride at ADRL’s Georgia Drags VI

Cecil, GA – Tommy D’Aprile took one wild ride during the 3rd round of Pro Extreme qualifying on Friday night at the ADRL Georgia Drags VI.  Oil from the engine got under the left tire of the supercharged Camaro sending it into the left wall.  “I felt it go and knew I was along for the ride,” stated D’Aprile.  Tommy was uninjured during the incident, we can’t say that for the car.

Doug Morgan and Buddy Forrest Ready Battle in Quick 32 Sportsman Series

ROCHESTER, NEW YORK – The dragster team of Morgan and Forrest had a successful first year in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, and team crew chief Doug Morgan said he and driver Buddy Forrest are prepared to take the momentum into this year’s tour.

“We’re ready to rock,” said Morgan, who along with Forrest race in the series’ Top Dragster class. “We’re looking forward to it. We had a successful season last year.”

The Rochester, New York-based team competes with a Spitzer Enterprises dragster, powered by a 638-cubic inch Chevy engine using a nitrous oxide system. The power goes through a two-speed Powerglide to the rear slicks.

The team did not compete in the first event of 2009, but had a good showing for the remaining five events in the six-event tour, qualifying for all other races. Along with a runner-up spot in the Top Dragster class during the Labor Day race at Grand Bend, the team finished the season in style with an overall win during the final Quick 32 Sportsman Series race late in September at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario.

Morgan said there are no major changes to the car for 2010.

Triumphs Over Tragedy at ADRL Georgia Drags VI

CECIL, GA — Despite racing with heavy hearts after losing one of their own to an early-morning accident, American Drag Racing League (ADRL) competitors still managed to turn in thrilling, record-setting performances for the Apr. 23-24, ADRL Hardee’s Georgia Drags VI at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP).

Veterans Jason Scruggs and Mike Castellana led the way with wins in Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous and Ashley Owens absolutely dominated the Pro Extreme Motorcycle class from start to finish all weekend long. Extreme 10.5 and Extreme Pro Stock produced first-time winners in Todd Moyer and Steven Boone, respectively, as did the Pro Jr. Dragster class won by Jordan Arnold in near-perfect fashion.

Raceday sadly opened with an accident in the pit area of Pro Nitrous racer Blake Housley that critically injured team co-owner Mike Walker, who was pronounced dead shortly afterward at Memorial Hospital of Adel at nearby Adel, Georgia.

In a moving pre-race ceremony before packed grandstands, ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling dedicated the Georgia Drags to Walker’s memory and Scruggs later donated the fourth ADRL Minuteman trophy of his career to the Walker family in victory lane.

Sheikh’s Record Run Highlights First-Day Qualifying at ADRL Georgia Drags

CECIL, GA — When Sheikh Khalid Al-Thani of Qatar covered the eighth mile at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) in just 3.63 seconds at 212.49 miles per hour Apr. 23, he became the quickest and fastest “doorslammer” driver in the world. The record-setting run also secured for him the provisional number-one Pro Extreme starting position for the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Hardee’s Georgia Drags VI.

Also sitting on top of their respective classes with a fourth and final qualifying session scheduled for Saturday morning are Al-Thani’s Al-Anabi Racing teammate Burton Auxier in Pro Nitrous, Gary White in Extreme 10.5, Pro Extreme Motorcycle star Ashley Owens and Pete Berner in Extreme Pro Stock.

Al-Thani’s crew chief, Frank “Ace” Manzo, gave much of the credit for the Sheikh’s impressive outing to husband-and-wife tuners Tim and Kim Richards, who were added to the Al-Anabi crew just a couple of weeks earlier.

Cody Barklage Is OK, the Car Will Need Repair

Cecil GA – The car appeared to go right after he hit the throttle.  Fortunately John Stanley, who was in the other lane, was out in front and missed the carnage behind him as Barklage’s car would cut across from the left lane and hit the right wall.  The team will concentrate their efforts on the second team car of Zack Barklage for the remainder of the weekend.  Very glad he’s OK!

Carpenter Primed to Build on Career Best Performances in Valdosta

CECIL, GA – After rain postponed the completion of last month’s ADRL Universal Technical Institute Dragpalooza VI in Baytown, TX, Pro Nitrous veteran Charles Carpenter is looking to build on the career best performances he posted at Houston Raceway Park.

Returning to the very facility where he suffered a catastrophic crash one year earlier, Carpenter set career best marks in both elapsed time and speed this time around in Baytown, laying down a 3.929 at 192.82 MPH to land in the fifth qualifying position heading into eliminations. But Mother Nature wouldn’t allow those eliminations to be contested, forcing Carpenter and the rest of the ADRL to pack up and return to Houston to complete the event later in the season.

As the only Pro Nitrous machine to successfully make all three qualifying passes under power, Carpenter says he was in prime position to capitalize on that consistency in eliminations.

“I really felt like that was a race we could win,” Carpenter said. “It’s so important for us to get down the track consistently, and we had done that and with some great numbers to boot. With the changing atmospheric and track conditions, it’s certainly anyone’s game, but our ’55 Bel Air could do no wrong that weekend. I was extremely disappointed it got rained out.”

Team Aruba Prepares for Upcoming Georgia Drags, Thankful for Overwhelming Fan Support

UNION, NORTH CAROLINA — Despite their successful test run of 6.31 at 218mph before  last weekend’s Mountain Motor Pro Stock Association (MMPSA) inaugural race, Team Aruba was plagued with unfortunate bad luck as tire problems kept the team from performing optimally. “Off-course, we were trying new things to make our car go faster,” says Team Aruba driver, Trevor Eman. “But we ended up getting lost in our new changes, and didn’t get a handle on them until the first round of eliminations.”

Team Aruba quickly determined that their problems resided within their tires. “We pinpointed the issue, realizing that our problems stemmed from our tires. When we replaced them, we were able to get back down the track.”

Though The Rock presented its fair share of challenges, Team Aruba thoroughly enjoyed their time at the MMPSA season opener. “It was great to finally get the new MMPSA season underway,” Trevor comments. The return to quarter-mile track racing and familiar faces brought nostalgia to the team. “It was great to compete against teams that we used to race against while we were under the IHRA. They are a really great group of people, and the competition that comes with racing against them is just awesome.”
