Di Lecce, Vardy, De Jonge, and Orfanidis top qualifiers at TMP’s Cayuga Dragway in PMRA, Quick 32 Sportsman Series, and PBSS racing

CAYUGA, ON – Qualifying sessions for the Pro Modified Racing Association, the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto PMRA - Martin 131 Rain out winnerParts, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series presented by Wiseco Performance Products were completed today at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park.

And in a PMRA race postponed from a week previous, Rocky Di Lecce was victorious winning his first PMRA event.

Di Lecce, of Mississauga, also paced the PMRA Pro Mods by qualifying number one for the Cayuga race, running a 5.964-second, 242.98-mph pass. Qualifying number two was Sam Andreacchi of Toronto, Ontario Rob Atchison of London, Ontario qualified next, followed by Paolo Giust of Osgoode, Ontario and Jay Santos of Halton Hills, Ontario to round out the top five.

Beckman makes four consistent passes in Valvoline NextGen Dodge

 

TOPEKA, KS – A year ago at Heartland Park Topeka, not many outside of the Valvoline NextGen pit of reigning NHRA Funny Car Jack Beckman - Topekachampion “Fast Jack” Beckman expected the verbose California driver to take home the event title at Heartland Park.

Beckman and his Todd Smith-led crew, in their third race together did just that, upsetting favored DSR teammate Ron Capps, a three-time Heartland Park winner, in the all-DSR Funny Car final round. Six months later, with two more wins notched, Beckman edged Capps by just two points to earn his first Mello Yello NHRA Funny Car championship.

Johnson and Gray Top Mopar Qualifiers at Kansas Nationals

Topeka, KS – Under grey skies and humid conditions at Heartland Park near Topeka, Mopar drivers wrapped up two days of qualifying Moparin preparation for Sunday’s 25th annual NHRA Kansas Nationals.  Defending Pro Stock winner of the event, Allen Johnson was the top Mopar entry with a third place qualifying spot, while Johnny Gray was fourth quickest to lead the Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car contingency.

Johnson quickest run was made in Friday’s second qualifying session when both he and teammate Jeg Coughlin Jr. not only posted the exact same elapsed time of 6.633 seconds, but matched incremental times as well at 60 ft (0.997 sec), 330 ft (2.784), 660 ft (4.272) and 1,000 ft (5.553) marks.  Only a 0.16 mph difference put the Johnson’s Mopar Express Lane Dodge in third spot ahead of the Jegs.com Mopar with the quicker speed of 208.62 mph.

Capps hopes ‘date weekend’ with Shelley pays off with fourth Kansas event title for NAPA AUTO PARTS team

TOPEKA, KS – Ron Capps has won three Funny Car titles in the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

When the driver of Don Schumacher Racing’s NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T begins championship eliminations today he knows it will not be a losing weekend.

It’s become a Topeka tradition for his wife, Shelley Capps, to join him for a “date weekend” at the Kansas Nationals and after coming up a little short to DSR teammate Jack Beckman last year he wasn’t about to be at Topeka without Shelley this year.

JOHN FORCE LEADS 1-2-3 QUAL EFFORT AT KANSAS NATIONALS

TOPEKA, KS – It was a banner day for John Force Racing as qualifying for the 25th annual NHRA Kansas Nationals concluded with all John Force - Topekathree JFR Ford Mustangs atop the Funny Car qualifying order. On Friday it was Robert Hight and Courtney Force sitting at the top the provisional order but today 9-time NHRA Kansas Nationals winner John Force ran 4.043 setting the track ET record en route to his 11th No.1 qualifying effort at Heartland Park Topeka. It was the 141st No. 1 of Force’s illustrious career and the first of the 2013 Mello Yello Drag Racing season.

“It was so smooth on that run I told (crew chief Mike) Neff we could go harder. He said OK but we have to race tomorrow. He slowed it down on that run and it still spun at the other end. When I went past the lights I almost got into the wall down there. When I hit the chutes it sucked me over. Neff is a real sharp cookie but I knew that. With his driving ability and what he has done as a crew chief,” said Force after his final run of the day a 4.077 second pass.

Schumacher starts with points lead Sunday, Gray leads DSR as No. 4 Funny Car seed in NHRA Kansas Nationals

TOPEKA, KS – Tony Schumacher just missed his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series DSRbut was able to earn the No. 2 spot after Saturday’s last qualifying sessions in the Kansas Nationals.

Schumacher’s time Friday night of 3.769 seconds at 326.08 mph, which was quickest of the day, was edged Saturday by Al-Anabi Racing’s Shawn Langdon’s time of 3.767 (322.50). It was Langdon’s seventh pole in the last 15 NHRA races.

In Funny Car, Johnny Gray, the most recent winner on tour, and the Pitch Energy team paced the Don Schumacher Racing Funny Car quartet of Dodge Charger R/Ts with a best time of 4.053 seconds at 313.37 mph in the final session to earn the fourth seed for Sunday’s championship eliminations, which begin at 11 a.m. (CT) at Heartland Park Topeka.

Landmark 500th elimination round win for Coughlin could happen Sunday

TOPEKA, KS – Jeg Coughlin Jr.’s JEGS.com/Mopar Dodge Avenger has consistently been one of the top cars in Pro Stock this season Jeg Coughlin Jrand the team’s fourth-place qualifying effort at the NHRA Kansas Nationals proved the point yet again.

“It feels real good right now,” Coughlin said. “We’ve been working on our total package, trying to put it all together: from the pits to the racetrack to the driving to qualifying to turning the win light on Sundays.”

Coughlin had a best pass of 6.633 seconds at 208.46 mph, missing on third place by just a fraction of his top speed as teammate Allen Johnson had an identical ET but got the third position thanks to a mph of 208.62.

Taylor, DeFlorian, Laurita Head Qualifying List At X-DRL’s Bash On The Bayou At No Problem Raceway

BELLE ROSE, LA – Frankie Taylor once again found himself at the top of Pro X-treme qualifying in the X-treme Drag Racing League (X-Jim Laurita - Pro NitrousDRL), this time in its debut at No Problem Raceway for the Bash On The Bayou.

Hot conditions didn’t bother Taylor during Friday’s qualifying, as the Pro X-treme standout went 3.70 at 206.45 mph, putting him at No. 1 through three qualifying sessions in Belle Rose, La.

“That would be real cool to be No. 1 again,” Taylor said. “We were pretty happy with that pass, especially doing that in some pretty hot conditions. Just getting down the track with a good run like that is what matters.”

HIGHT AND C. FORCE DOMINATE KANSAS NATIONALS ON FRIDAY

TOPEKA, KS – It is only the first day of the NHRA Kansas Nationals but it was a great day for Robert Hight and Courtney Force who Courtney Force - Topekafinished each qualifying session 1-2 in the Funny Car category. It was the first time all season Hight’s Auto Club Ford Mustang has been the quickest of the first two sessions and the two-time Kansas Nationals winner was pleased with his first day effort. Hight gave a lot of the credit to his crew chief Jimmy Prock and his pre-race decision to try a new tune-up.

“For some reason we always do good here in Topeka. We have qualified well but here lately we have been struggling and we’ve been working on the early part of the run. We definitely got it today being low ET of both sessions. It has been ages since we did that.  The back half of both of those runs weren’t very good.

Schumacher charges to Kansas provisional pole, Hagan leads DSR Funny Car foursome

TOPEKA, KS – Seven-time NHRA Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher is in position to record his second No. 1 qualifying Schumacher - US Army - Comp Plus, Roger Richardsposition of the season and 73rd of his career after posting the quickest time of opening day in the 25th annual NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka.

Schumacher along with U.S. Army crew chief Mike Green and assistant Neal Strausbaugh produced a time of 3.769 seconds at 326.08 mph in the second of two qualifying sessions on Friday.

Two more sessions remain on Saturday after which the top-16 will advance to championship eliminations that are scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Joining Schumacher in the quick-six Friday were Don Schumacher Racing teammates Spencer Massey in the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher dragster, who is No. 5, and reigning world champ Antron Brown, who is No. 6.
