IHRA Hot Rod Classic Opens with Huge Debut at Xtreme Raceway Park

FERRIS, TX — The IHRA Hot Rod Classic lived up to the hype with a huge debut and plenty of big money distributed over the weekend at Xtreme Raceway Park.

Thanks to all the folks at Xtreme Raceway Park, the IHRA staff working the event, the racers who participated, and partners like Don Baskin Trucking LLC, M&M Transmission, Stroud Safety, Hoosier Racing Tire, Extreme Racing Oil, LJ1 Oil Products and TMF Metal Solutions for a great debut weekend.

Bringing back a blast from the past, the excitement was at a high level as class racing returned to the International Hot Rod Association and the sounds of ground-pounding, earth-shaking Pro Mods rumbled down the drag strip. It led to plenty of old-style Texas shootouts in the final round.

John Sullivan from Macon, TN earned the $6,000 prize for winning the Outlaw Pro Mod final. He won the holeshot .026 to .168 over Kalispell, MT racer Clyde Scott and his Corvette roared down the 1/8-mile in 3.729 seconds at 163.70 mph. Sullivan needed the great start as Scott’s Camaro went 210.48 mph on a 3.598-second pass. Continue reading

HULL LOOKING AHEAD FOR BETTER LUCK AFTER VEGAS

LAS VEGAS – Most firsts do not come easy, and that includes the first time attempting four-wide competition in a Funny Car for Buddy Hull, driver for Jim Dunn Racing. This weekend’s Vegas NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway posed many unexpected hurdles for the Jim Dunn team, but Hull is confident that it was an opportunity to shake off any first-time jitters in preparation for the second four-wide race in Charlotte in a couple of weeks.

“No one is harder on me, than me,” said Hull. “I was super excited going into this weekend to show off all the progress we have been making with the car, and we unfortunately did not deliver. I must remember that it is rare that progress is linear. We were able to collect several rounds of data this weekend. We’re going to take a hard look at it over the next two weeks and come back to Charlotte an even stronger team. I know we can, and will, do better moving forward.”

The fourth round of qualifying was the strongest for Hull. He made a 4.236 second, 294.31 mph pass, finishing second behind No. 12 qualifier Chad Green. Continue reading

JEG COUGHLIN JR. WINS LAS VEGAS NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

LAS VEGAS – Jeg Coughlin Jr. handled his SCAG Power Equipment / Outlaw Mile Hi Light Beer Chevy to the 66th Pro Stock victory of his career Sunday at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“This was epic. The whole weekend was great. Our car was ready right out of the trailer Friday on that first run. We had three really good quads during race day that we had to traverse our way through. Fortunately, I had a really good car and felt in a groove all seven runs, from qualifying on to today,” Coughlin Jr. said. “I was letting the clutch out well was driving well navigating down the track. I can attest after being away for three years, there’s nothing finer than seeing, in a four-wide, a blinking win light. It was fantastic. I’m really excited. It’s my first four-wide win so it feels really good to celebrate. Having our partners part of our winners circle, Randy and Maria with SCAG, having them on the starting line with their dealers, it really does fire me up. Our partnership with them is special so congrats to them as well.” Continue reading

Ron Capps Finishes Third in Electrifying Four-Wide Nationals Funny Car Final in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – In one of the closest Funny Car races in four-wide drag racing history, three-time world champion Ron Capps finished third in the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals final round Sunday afternoon at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Driving the NAPA Auto Care Toyota GR Supra, Capps laid down a weekend-best 3.902-second pass at 333.00 MPH to come up just thousandths of a second short in a four-wide photo finish.

Capps and crew chief Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli worked their way through qualifying, steadily improving in each session. After a pair of 4-second passes on Friday, Capps laid down a 3.988 E.T. at 324.67 MPH to step up in the third session on Saturday. A consistent but slightly quicker 3.980 E.T. in the final session put Capps in the No. 11 position going into Sunday eliminations.

The first quad of Funny Car eliminations was a tricky one, but Capps came out on top. He and fellow Toyota driver J.R. Todd left first with identical .059 reaction times, then Capps held on to win with a 4.289 E.T. at 222.88 MPH over Todd, Dave Richards, and Daniel Wilkerson. Capps was first off of the starting line again in the second round, an advantage that helped him and his 3.932 E.T. finish ahead of Matt Hagan’s 3.938 E.T., Todd’s 3.951-second effort, and Jason Rupert’s 4.055 E.T. LAS VEGAS POSITIVES GIVE JOSH HART MORE MOTIVATION FOR CHARLOTTE NATIONALS

LAS VEGAS, NV – The first four-wide race of the season is in the books and Josh Hart and the R+L Carriers Top Fuel team made strides at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. After four qualifying sessions Hart made continually quicker runs and entered race day at the Las Vegas Four-Wide Nationals as the No. 12 qualifier. The first round quad was comprised of Brittany Force, Billy Torrence and Jasmine Salinas. It was a tough group of competitors, but Hart felt the two runs on Saturday set his R+L Carriers team up for success.

When all four 12,000 horsepower Top Fuel dragster rolled into their assigned lanes it was Hart in lane two flanked by Force in lane one and Torrence in lane three. Hart was first off the line with a .073 reaction time and at half-track Force had driven past him but he held off Torrence and Salinas to advance to the second round. His win came at a cost as his engine expired at the finish line in a quick ball of flames. His winning time of 3.957 seconds at 275.96 mph was his quickest pass of the weekend and set him up with another race against Force along with Doug Kalitta and Steve Torrence. Continue reading

Alexis DeJoria Advances to Quarterfinal Quad, Qualifies for Second Consecutive Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge

LAS VEGAS – Fresh off a runner-up finish from the NHRA Arizona Nationals one week prior, Alexis DeJoria carried the momentum from her rebound weekend into The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway as she pursued a first four-wide win. The two-time winner at The Strip began eliminations for the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals from the No. 9 position before advancing to the quarterfinals to gain a position in the Funny Car point standings.

DeJoria qualified for the first of two consecutive four-wide events on the strength of her 3.967-second at 317.72 MPH pass, which she recorded aboard the Bandero Premium Tequila Toyota GR Supra during the third round of qualifying. In her first elimination quad on race day, DeJoria faced Austin Prock, Blake Alexander, and Jeff Diehl. The six-time national event winner was quick on the throttle and took her Bandero Supra to the finish line stripe in 3.945 seconds to advance alongside Prock, her final-round opponent from the Phoenix-area race. Round two featured more stout competition for DeJoria and the DC Motorsports team. In addition to Prock, she found herself squaring off against Bob Tasca and Chad Green as the four speedsters battled for a spot in the final elimination quad. Continue reading

Tony Schumacher Looks Ahead to Charlotte for First Four-Wide Win

LAS VEGAS – With eight world championships and 86 national event wins, Tony Schumacher is the most successful driver in NHRA Top Fuel history, but despite checking nearly every box on the drag racing list of accomplishments, he has yet to hoist a four-wide Wally trophy. He’s come close, finishing as the runner-up in 2012 and 2017 in Charlotte, N.C. as well as recording a runner-up finish at the 2018 Las Vegas NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. Aboard the Okuma Top Fuel dragster, Schumacher was hoping this weekend’s visit to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway would be the event where his four-wide luck would change, but a first-round loss halted his shot at picking up a first four-wide win.

Starting from the No. 2 seed for the second time in three events, Schumacher drew No. 7 qualifier Shawn Reed, No. 10 qualifier Justin Ashley, and No. 15 qualifier Terry Totten as his first-round competitors. Schumacher was second off of the starting line and on a good run before his machine started to spin the tires near the top end, slowing to a 4.109 E.T. while Ashley and Totten posted a 3.777 and 3.911, respectively, to advance into the next round. Defending Las Vegas Four-Wide Nationals Winner Antron Brown Out in Round 1

LAS VEGAS – Less than 24 hours after Antron Brown won his first Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge of the season, the defending Top Fuel winner of the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas was looking to go two-for-two on the weekend in Sunday eliminations at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Brown finished third in his first-round quad, though, sending the third-year team owner and his Matco Tools team back to the drawing board for the upcoming Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

Brown and his AB Motorsports team led by co-crew chiefs Brian Corradi and Mark Oswald started building momentum in the second qualifying session on Friday when the Matco Tools dragster recorded the second-quickest pass of the session, a 3.803-second E.T., to collect two bonus points. In the third session, which also counted as the first round of the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, he was the quickest of his quad to finish ahead of the other three drivers. Brown saved his best pass for the last session and final round of the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, a 3.792 E.T. at 330.72 MPH, to get the win, the $10,000 prize, and three championship bonus points.
