BUDDY HULL PUMPED FOR FIRST COUNTDOWN APPEARANCE

LONG BEACH, CA – For the first time in his professional career Buddy Hull will be participating in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship. As a first year Funny Car driver for legendary team Jim Dunn Racing, Hull does not take this opportunity lightly. The team has participated in every NHRA national event and last weekend raced to the quarterfinals at the Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals.

“This team has come a long way in 2024 and last weekend at the U.S. Nationals I think we had a breakthrough,” said Hull, who raced part-time in Top Fuel for the previous three seasons. “Jim and Jon Dunn have been working on our tune-up and a lot changed this season. I am a big guy, and I am learning so those things take time, but we are heading into the Countdown with some momentum and great positive energy.

Jim Dunn Racing and Buddy Hull will start the six-race playoff from the No. 12 spot driving the Lescure Funny Car. With the resetting of the Mission Foods point standings Hull is only 145 points out of first place. The team will continue to focus on quality runs in qualifying and then making the most of their race day opportunities. Continue reading

HULL ADVANCES TO FIRST-EVER FUNNY CAR QUARTERFINALS AT U.S. NATIONALS

INDIANAPOLIS – There’s nothing like the magic of the Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals, and rookie Funny Car driver Buddy Hull had an even more magical weekend at the 70th anniversary running of the event. For the first time in his Funny Car career, the driver for Jim Dunn Racing advanced to the quarterfinals, setting a new personal best speed in the process.

“It’s the U.S. Nationals and we finally did it,” said Hull. “Between Brainerd and Indy, we changed a lot. We put some more new parts in the race car and it immediately did what it needed to do. We had a completely different race car this weekend than what we’ve had all year long. There’s no question about it.”

During the three days of qualifying leading up to race day, Hull made five qualifying runs. His best pass came during the fourth run on Sunday, at 4.046 seconds, 303.30 mph, earning him the No. 15 spot. On race day on Monday, he was able to get past No. 2 qualifier Bob Tasca III in the first round of eliminations. In the second round, Hull set a new personal record for speed, with a 4.028 second, 320.51 mph run against Ron Capps. Continue reading

BUDDY HULL BIRTHING A LEGACY IN INDY

LONG BEACH, CA – The Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals is known for creating legends. And rookie Funny Car driver Buddy Hull is hoping to become one of the legendary few to pick up his first win at the historic 70th annual U.S. Nationals this weekend, August 30-September 2, at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

“This weekend we’ll be competing for points and a half, which means it’s the best opportunity we have to make up some ground in points before the start of the Countdown,” said Hull. “It’s not going to be easy, but I know our Jim Dunn Racing team is capable of it. We’ll be competing against 18 of the other fastest Funny Cars in the world, on drag racing’s biggest stage. That’s the kind of challenge that thrills me.”

FUNNY CAR DRIVER BUDDY HULL SET TO THROW OUT FIRST PITCH TONIGHT FOR TEXAS RANGERS

ARLINGTON, TX – NHRA Funny Car driver and Dallas businessman Buddy Hull is used to bringing the heat to drag racing fans across the country, racing on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Tonight Hull will bring a different kind of heat as he throws out the first pitch prior to the Texas Rangers versus Pittsburgh Pirates major league baseball game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. This will be Hull’s first experience throwing a first pitch, but the accomplished professional drag racer and former professional weightlifter is excited about the opportunity.

“I’ve never thrown a first pitch, but I did grow up watching baseball,” said Hull. “My grandmother was a huge major league baseball fan, and she spent her summers sitting in the rocking chair listening to games. I’m super excited to be able to introduce Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates fans to the NHRA. I am just going to try and get it over the plate and into the catcher’s mitt.”

Hull has been racing professionally since 2021, but the third generation drag racer has been representing NHRA and his sponsors across the country as a brand ambassador all season. Hull has been behind the wheel of fuel altered, Top Ful Dragsters and now nitro Funny Cars. He has lit up scoreboards with multiple 320 mph, sub-four second passes. With his larger-than-life personality Hull is a fan favorite on and off the track. Continue reading

HULL LOOKING AHEAD TO AN EXCITING U.S. NATIONALS

BRAINERD, MN – Sometimes the best way to treat a less-than-ideal race weekend is to use it as motivation for the next one. For rookie Funny Car driver Buddy Hull, he’ll be taking the lessons he learned during the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn. to the Toyota NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis in a couple of weeks.

“Every once and a while, things just don’t click,” said Hull. “The Jim Dunn Racing team is still working through some new parts, and I’m working on getting my lights a little better. I’m normally more consistent than I was this weekend, but it’s evidence that there is always more we can be doing to improve. We’re going to take these next couple of weeks before Indy to get better.”

This was Hull’s first appearance at Brainerd International Raceway, and he knows it will not be his last. During qualifying, Hull made four passes with his final run being his best, at 4.815 seconds and 181.45 mph. Continue reading

HULL PITCHING HIMSELF INTO ROOKIE APPEARANCE IN BRAINERD

LONG BEACH, CA – As rookie Funny Car driver Buddy Hull enters race weekend for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, August 15-18, at Brainerd International Raceway, he is beginning to run out of firsts. In his inaugural season as a driver for Jim Dunn Racing, the Brainerd, Minn. racetrack is one of the last few tracks on the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series tour that he has not previously competed at.

“All of the firsts that have come with this year are obviously very exciting,” said Hull. “But there’s a certain level of confidence that comes with not being the newbie all the time. This has been an incredible first season in a nitro Funny Car, and I’m already thinking ahead not just to this year’s U.S. Nationals and Countdown, but also to next season. I’m consistently getting better, just like our Jim Dunn Racing team is.”

The Dallas-based driver is coming off a personal best speed set in Sonoma at 319.60 mph. This new personal record comes on the heels of weeks of growing consistency with the car, as new parts have been introduced. Hull credits these improvements both to work he’s been putting in as a driver, but also fine tuning from the team. Continue reading

HULL SETS NEW PERSONAL BEST FOR SPEED IN SONOMA

SONOMA, CA – Funny Car Buddy Hull is a naturally optimistic individual, and this weekend at the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals in Sonoma, Calif., gave him a lot to be enthusiastic about. The rookie Funny Car driver for Jim Dunn Racing set a new personal best speed during the fourth round of qualifying at 319.60 mph at Sonoma Raceway.

“Setting new personal bests is what keeps us going as a team,” said Hull. “When we came back to the pits after that run on Saturday night, it was just a different kind of energy. We couldn’t wait for race day after that run – it’s one of the best feelings in the world.”

Hull and the iconic Jim Dunn Racing team used the first half of qualifying to work out a few kinks with the car, before making that speed personal record during Q4. They then took what they learned during that run to make their quickest run of the weekend during the first round of eliminations against No. 1 qualifier Bob Tasca III. Continue reading

HULL MAKES LONG AWAITED RETURN TO SONOMA RACEWAY

LONG BEACH, CA – The last time rookie Funny Car driver Buddy Hull competed at Sonoma Raceway, it was his rookie Top Fuel season, and one of his first NHRA national events. A lot has changed since 2021, but his drive to make the most of his circumstances and win rounds has not. Now a driver for the iconic Jim Dunn Racing team, this weekend at the DENSO NHRA Sonoma Nationals, July 26-28, Hull is doing everything he can to improve his qualifying position in a way that will better his chances come race day.

“When I was last at the Sonoma Nationals in 2021, it was one of my best qualifying efforts to date, at the No. 10 spot,” said Hull. “This season we have been working hard to get the best qualifying position possible. Where you qualify can make such a difference on race day. The team is working incredibly hard to get us there, and I just need to continue to treat every qualifying run like it’s an elimination round and do my job on the starting line.”

The Sonoma Nationals will be Hull’s 12th NHRA national event as a Funny Car driver. Since the beginning of the season, he’s appeared in the opposite lane on race day against seven other Funny Car drivers including John Force, Matt Hagan and Ron Capps, the continuation of a lifelong dream. HULL LEAVES SEATTLE WITH POSITIVE ATTITUDE

SEATTLE – Patience is a virtue that is often rewarded, and Funny Car driver Buddy Hull will continue to be patient. The rookie Funny Car driver for Jim Dunn Racing extended his four-race streak of solid, consistent runs that he is confident will soon turn into round wins at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways, situated in the Seattle area. Racing with Alo and Jenji Boba Tea, the two wildly popular organic beverages adorning the rear wing of the Lescure Funny Car for the next two events Hull and the Jim Dunn team were looking to continue to put up strong performance numbers.

“I don’t think I could explain enough the confidence our team has had these last three races versus the first five or six of the year. It’s a completely different team,” said Hull. “And it’s because almost every run we’re going down the racetrack. We’re not running three second runs yet, but we’re running low fours. It’s only a matter of time before we make our first three-second run and before our first round win.”

The Dallas-native qualified in the No. 13 spot during his inaugural appearance at Pacific Raceways. For the first time, he faced J.R. Todd in the first round on race day. Todd is the seventh different Funny Car driver Hull has raced against this season. Continue reading
