Martin Leads Pro Extreme after Day 1 of Safety-Kleen Spring Drags II

Courtesy of ADRL

JUPITER, FL – Joey Martin is even quicker than he realized.  The Pro Extreme driver predicted his crowd favorite Lowmad would run between a 3.648 and a 3.659 in the staging lanes leading up to his third qualifying pass during Friday’s American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Safety-Kleen Spring Drags II at Palm Beach International Raceway.

But Martin went even quicker, going an incredible 3.642 at 205.35 miles per hour to stay in the top qualifying spot after one exciting day of action.

“I guess the track is a little better than I anticipated,” Martin joked.

“It just feels good to roll up in here and run as good as we do.”

Martin stole the show in Pro Extreme under the PBIR lights on Friday, but several others helped make it a memorable qualifying night in the ADRL’s first visit to Florida.

Manners, Evans locked in epic Pro Fuel battle

Courtesy of IHRA

NORWALK, OH – Same story, different year. It was only five months ago when Bill Evans and the “Black Pearl” crew wrapped up their first Nitro Jam championship to conclude an epic title fight with Mike Manners that wasn’t decided until the final pass of the 2010 season.

This year, already halfway through the schedule, it appears the same great battle will once again dominate the headlines as Evans and Manners are once again locked in an epic struggle in Nitro Jam’s popular 100 percent nitro-powered dragster class heading into Pro Fuel’s biggest race of the year next month in Pittsburgh.

After sweeping the Pro Fuel class in San Antonio Michael Manners has closed within two points of class leader Bill Evans

“It has been a wonderful year so far for our team, especially with the two wins in San Antonio. We were a little disappointed with some of the inconsistency the first half of the year, but the car is running as good as ever at this point in the season,” Manners said. “The crew has done an excellent job keeping us fast and competitive and it looks like this year we might have something for that ‘Black Pearl’ team.”

From “Pure” HELL and Back!

Pleasanton, CA – The Goodguys Racing Pro Mod ’69 Camaro driven by Marc Meadors has a new look and a whole new attitude heading into the 2011 season.

Following a major setback last fall in Sacramento when a freak accident in the staging lanes destroyed the car and injured Marc’s young son, the team has regrouped, reloaded and repainted the car. Better yet, 8 year old Grant Meadors is doing well, while still recovering from his injuries and is ready to watch his dad kick asphalt this year.

Those familiar with Northern California drag racing history will instantly recognize the Camaro’s new paint scheme. In honor of long time family friend and Drag Racing Hall of Fame inductee Rich Guasco, the Goodguys Racing Camaro sports the famed “Pure Hell” flames and candy burgundy hues that made the Fuel Altered a worldwide sensation.

Nitro Jam’s Harley riders providing best show on two wheels

Courtesy of IHRA

NORWALK, OH – They are the true daredevils of the sport, modern day masters of the impossible.

Reaching the fastest speeds in the world among the two-wheeled community with no traditional safety nets to speak of, the riders of the Nitro Harley division are renowned for their death defying 220 mile per hour passes, incredible showmanship and parity among the racers.

And all of that has been on display and then some on the IHRA’s Nitro Jam tour this season.

Through four Nitro Jam events already completed in 2011, all four Nitro Harley riders have tasted victory and all four have taken their turn at the head of the pack. Beginning with Steve Dorn at Palm Beach through Randal Andras’ big win in San Antonio earlier this month, the Nitro Harley riders has proven the most competitive of the quintet of Nitro Jam classes and they are showing no signs of slowing down entering the second wave of races beginning next month.

Gosh Darned Ole Fluid Couplers…

Written by Camp Stanley

Hagerstown, MD – So how has it been going with the installation of the torque converter (read fluid coupler) in the “Appalachia on Steroids” Camaro you may be wondering? We made the conscious decision to make that leap at the end of last year but as in all things new, some things are not really all that easy!

We headed down to Mooresville, NC to test the new parts and pieces to be sure all would be in the ready for the first ADRL race in Houston, Texas. Before we left I scoured the web for all the war stories on what NOT to do when you put a torque converter in a high horsepower car.

I put all of this profound knowledge I garnered into a little cheat sheet/booklet so we could try our best not to make those same errors. More on that later!

Upon arrival on a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon we unloaded the car and proceeded into our new year start up of the engine and filling and checking the new LencoDrive transmission.

The transmission part went well but the motor part was way, way downhill after that. After setting the timing with the MSD mag 44, next up was to phase the crank trigger to the mag. In our case this takes several start the car, shut it off, adjust and then do it all over again.
