Roy Hill returns home to zMax Dragway fresh off U.S. Nationals win

Courtesy of Roy Hill Racing

CONCORD, NC – After winning Super Stock / B Automatic at the 2010 U.S. Nationals, Roy Hill set out to defend his title two weeks ago at the 57th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis.

He did just that.  Hill once again emerged with the SS/BA class trophy and is riding that momentum into his “home race”, this weekend’s 4th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMax Dragway just outside of Charlotte, NC.

“Winning the U.S. Nationals two years in a row in this Phoenix Racing 2010 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet is quite a fulfilling experience,” said Hill. “In addition to my SS/BA win, we had Charley Downing in the second Cobra Jet and he won Super Stock / A Automatic. It was a weekend to remember for our team. To come away with two wins at the biggest drag race in the world is just incredible.”

At the “Big Go”, the James Finch-owned Cobra Jets were making their national event debut with Roush Yates power, and will be utilizing the same strong engines in Charlotte this weekend.

Orr qualified number four with his big-block Dodge with a 7.177, 190.86 in the 16-car Top Sportsman field, and eliminated Bob Bauer Jr of Elma, New York for the division final. Boland wins finals, Montesano takes 2011 PMRA championship

Courtesy of PMRA

CAYUGA, ON – It has happened several years in the past, and once again the championship in the Pro Modified Racing Association was not decided until the last race of the final event.

For 2011, Vito Montesano held the lead throughout the season, but when it came to the final at the Cayuga Dragway of Toronto Motorsports Park, his points leads was in question when Bruce Boland and Eric Latino pulled up to the lanes for the last race.

Both driving new cars this season, Boland had qualified number two in the field with a 6.000, 236.80, and Latino had taken the top spot with a 5.996, 242.98, setting the meet’s Low ET and Top Speed benchmarks. Both were previous PMRA event winners this year.

Boland and his crew staged and made ready for the pass first, then Latino lined up, getting settled before the tree was lit. But Latino fouled at the line, and Boland went on to a 5.943, 240.08 pass to take the win.

ADRL To Implement Electrimotion RF Safety Device Starting At Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V

Courtesy of ADRL

O’FALLON, MO – The American Drag Racing League (ADRL) announced on Wednesday that it has ordered the Electrimotion RF Safety Device and it will be in place and functional for the final two events of the 2011 season.

The safety feature, which is designed to automatically shut off the engine and fuel system, and deploy the parachutes, will be operational beginning with the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V, which takes place Sept. 23-24 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. A receiver must be installed in a vehicle for the RF device to function.

It was recently instituted in the NHRA, and ADRL officials have also chosen to implement the device.

“After looking into all of the available options and discussing with the NHRA their success with the Electrimotion RF Safety Devices, we have decided to implement this device,” ADRL Director of Technical Services Chris Bell said.

Manners and ‘Shredder’ team claim first Pro Fuel Dragster title

Courtesy of IHRA

NORWALK, OH – Talk about having a bad case of déjà vu.  Two years in a row Michael Manners was forced to relive the exact same moment in time against the same man for the same prize, but this time Manners was able to do just enough to change history in his favor.

Entering the final race of the 2011 Nitro Jam season, Michael Manners traveled to Martin, Mich. with just a handful of points separating himself and rival Bill Evans in the battle for the Pro Fuel Dragster crown. And just like the year before, the chase for the championship came down to the same two drivers in the exact same scenario with the top driver of the weekend walking away the champion.

Manners drove “The Shredder” Pro Fuel Dragster to his first Nitro Jam championship in 2011

Last year Evans proved victorious in the final pass of the season to win the inaugural Pro Fuel championship, but in 2011 Manners was able to do just enough to hang on to the top spot and exit U.S. 131 Motorsports Park with his first career championship behind the wheel of the insanely popular “Shredder” nitro-powered dragster.

Coughlin and JEGS team gaining ground on new Pro Mod

Courtesy of Jegs

CHARLOTTE, NC – Troy Coughlin and the JEGS.com Pro Mod team are anxious to continue their learning curve with their new racecar at this weekend’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Nationals at zMax Dragway.

Coughlin unveiled the Jerry Bickel-built ’68 Camaro at Indianapolis in the most recent race, and he qualified No. 10 before falling in the first round. The JEGS.com Chevrolet has a 504-cubic inch engine with a Precision Turbo turbocharger, a combination that is relatively new to the Pro Mod class.

“It should be a little better,” Coughlin said of this weekend’s race. “When we go to Charlotte, we will have improved, unless we found other things that need to be tuned. It’s kind of a work in progress. This is not brand new, but it’s still a pretty new combination.”

Crew chief Jake Hairston and the rest of the JEGS.com team – Bryan Metzenheim, Nick Gaylord and Mike Rees – continue to learn the car. Finding the right combination to go fast is difficult in any NHRA class, but the Pro Mod cars seem to be the most recalcitrant.

BELLE ROSE, LA – Five-time champion drag racer Jeg Coughlin Jr. led his team’s efforts at the third annual Moser Engineering Great American $50,000 Bracket Race by winning Saturday’s American Race Cars Shootout.

Coughlin’s nephew Troy Coughlin Jr. (T.J.) also ran well over the weekend, as did Jeg’s new bride Samantha Coughlin.

Still it was the veteran Jeg who made the biggest splash with his victory in the Shootout, which awarded the winner a 2011 American Race Cars dragster, a car that was sold on the spot to an interested buyer.

“I actually wasn’t planning on running the Shootout but my buddy Mitch Cleary from Over Kill Motorsports talked me into it and put up the $1,000 entry fee so I gave it a whirl,” Jeg said. “Five rounds later we had it done.
