Davis Delivers Second-Straight ADRL Top Sportsman Top Qualifier

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — For the second consecutive event, Ronnie Davis finished on top of the ADRL Top Sportsman qualifying list Sep. 10, piloting his Roush Yates-powered ’63 Corvette to a class-record 4.087-seconds pass at 180.67 miles per hour, which also stood as top speed for the class throughout Dragstock VIII at historic Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina.

Driving a second Davis Golf Carts ’63 Corvette, Jeff Pittman qualified eighth and made it to the semi-finals, while Davis fell in round one of eliminations with an uncharacteristic red-light start against Jerry Barker.

Unfortunately, the event was marred by the on-track death of Extreme Pro Stock driver Bert Jackson, the first driver fatality in the ADRL’s nearly eight-year history.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bert Jackson,” Davis said. “I didn’t know him personally, but whenever something like this happens at any race track, anywhere, you can’t help but feel a certain kinship as a race driver. It makes whatever happens to us that weekend, whether good or bad, pretty small in comparison.”

Busy ADRL Weekend Coming for Davis at ‘The Rock’

Wrtten By Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — Top Sportsman racer Ronnie Davis is planning for a major presence this weekend (Sep. 9-10) during the ADRL’s Dragstock VIII at historic Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina.

“We’re going to have two Davis Golf Cart Sales ’63 Corvettes racing in the Top Sportsman class,” the defending NHRA Division 2 Top Sportsman champion confirmed. “I’ll be driving my black Tommy Mauney Pro Mod car with its awesome Roush Yates power and I’m happy to say my good friend and a great Top Sportsman driver, Jeff Pittman, will be in my second Mauney-built car.”

At the most recent ADRL race a month ago at Virginia Motorsports Park, Davis qualified in first place and made it as far as the semi-finals.

“Hopefully, both cars will go deep in eliminations at Rockingham, but this new ADRL Top Sportsman class is tough and there’s no guarantee we’ll even both qualify,” Davis said. “I expect we’ll see the quickest and fastest field yet with the ADRL, so it’s going to be a battle for sure.”

Davis Plans Two Top Sportsman Entries for ADRL at Rockingham

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — Fresh off making history last weekend at Virginia Motorsports Park (VMP) as the first driver to compete in three different American Drag Racing League (ADRL) classes, Ronnie Davis is planning to step up his program next month in the ADRL’s Dragstock VIII at historic Rockingham Dragway in North Carolina.

“There is a very good chance you will see two Davis Golf Cart Sales ’63 Corvettes in the Top Sportsman class at the ADRL race in Rockingham,” the defending NHRA Division 2 Top Sportsman champion said. “I’ll be in my black Tommy Mauney Pro Mod car in Top Sportsman again, but the driver for my second Mauney-built car has not yet been named.

“I actually asked if I could drive both cars in Top Sportsman,” he added with a smile. “But I don’t think ADRL will allow that.”

Davis Ready for ADRL Top Sportsman Start in Virginia

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — Ronnie Davis is on the verge of becoming the first driver ever to compete in a third American Drag Racing League (ADRL) class. The Suwanee, Georgia-based golf cart dealer has previously raced in the ADRL’s Pro Nitrous and Extreme 10.5 categories, but as a Top Sportsman pioneer with both the IHRA and NHRA series, he’s excited about entering his specialty at the ADRL Speedtech U.S. Drags IV Aug. 12-13, at Virginia Motorsports Park, near Richmond.

After staging two exhibition experiments, ADRL made Top Sportsman its first official full-size, bracket-racing class at its most recent event last month in Martin, Michigan.

“I’m very, very happy to see ADRL add Top Sportsman to their show,” says Davis, who will be driving his Tommy Mauney-built ’63 Corvette equipped with a new, nitrous-boosted Roush Yates 822-cubic-inch engine. “I think it’s a good deal for the ADRL and it’s good for Top Sportsman racers to have another high-quality organization to race with on good, safe tracks.”

SUWANEE, GA — Ronnie Davis would like nothing better than to follow up his 2010 NHRA Division 2 Top Sportsman championship with a win this weekend in the 27th annual JEGS Allstars event July 9, at Route 66 Raceway, near Chicago.

The JEGS Allstars competition is a unique event that crowns individual champions in 10 separate Sportsman racing classes, as well as an overall team champion. Racers qualify for the prestigious event by earning points in their NHRA home divisions during year-long battles in the following NHRA Lucas Oil categories: Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman.

“This is just the second year that Top Sportsman has been included in the JEGS Allstars event and it’s the first year I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of it,” said Davis, who will be competing in his 1963 Corvette powered by an 822-cubic-inch, nitrous-injected engine built by NASCAR’s famous Roush Yates Performance Racing Engines.

Davis Adds Roush Yates Power to Racing Program

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — After securing two NHRA divisional titles, five IHRA championships and nearly 100 individual event wins, Top Sportsman standout Ronnie Davis recently made a dramatic change to his program by turning to Roush Yates Performance Engine Group for the horsepower beneath the hood of one of his race cars.

Davis owns a pair of Tommy Mauney-built ’63 Corvettes, with his orange car being a single-frame-rail, Top Sportsman-only machine and his black car a double-frame-rail Pro Mod that he occasionally enters in Top Sportsman competition. The Roush Yates (RY) motor powers the black car.

George Gable, a technical director for Roush Yates, said the company looked “long and hard” before deciding Davis was the right racer to lead their entry into the Top Sportsman ranks.

Davis Opens 2011 with Semi-Final Finish

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA – Just a couple of weeks ago Ronnie Davis was relaxing with friends and family at the National Hot Rod Association’s (NHRA’s) Division 2 banquet in Jacksonville, Florida. Seated with girl friend Michelle Dearing, Mike and Lisa Greg of Tracstar Satellite Systems, Brent Fisher of Goodyear Tires and daughters Michelle and Bridget, who both flew in from Houston to join the celebration, the Suwanee, Georgia-based golf cart dealer was savoring his second NHRA Div. 2 Top Sportsman championship.

Not one to rest on his laurels, though, the man they call “The King” was back in action this past weekend in the Davis Golf Cart Sales Automatic Pro Mod class during the 7th annual U.S. Street Nationals at Bradenton Motorsports Park in south-central Florida, the first of five races he has planned over just six weekends.
