Nitto Tire All Star Nationals Wrap Up – NMCA

Courtesy of Promedia

Commerce, GA – There were plenty of familiar faces in the Aerospace Components Winner’s Circle as well as a few new ones as the Fourth Annual Nitto Tire NMCA/NMRA All Star Nationals concluded at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. This was the second race of the 2012 Flowmaster Drag Racing Series, featuring NHRA Unleashed presented by Aerospace Components.

2010 Kooks Custom Headers world champion, Chris Rini and his Camaro put together, a flawless weekend, running consistent 6-ohs, winning his second consecutive event, after beating Clint Hairston after Hairston was forced to abort his run.

In the semifinals Hairston ended up in the sand trap at the end of the track, resulting in suspension damage, but rather than press his luck in the final, the Tulare, Calif., driver took the green, and then coasted down track, watching Rini churn out a 6.06 234 mph.

Bristol Brings Back Memories for Davis

Written by Ian Tocher

SUWANEE, GA — Ronnie Davis is heading back to where it all started for him nearly 23 years ago as he prepares for the American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL’s) inaugural visit to Bristol Dragway this weekend. Davis will be competing Apr. 20-21, at the ADRL Spring Drags III in Top Sportsman, added late last year as an official class to the series’ all-eighth-mile show.

“Bristol is where I made my very first IHRA Top Sportsman start in October of 1989, where I redlighted in the final and lost to Ron Miller,” Davis recalled. “Bristol is also the site of the first ever—ever—NHRA Top Sportsman race in July of 2002, which I helped get started.

“I don’t know how many races I’ve won up there since then, but it’s been a lot so I’m looking forward to getting up there again and going for my first ADRL win.”

Last month at the ADRL season opener in Baytown, Texas, Davis qualified second in his Tommy Mauney-built ’63 Corvette and said he was encouraged by the performance of his nitrous oxide-injected, 822-cubic-inch engine from Roush Yates Performance Engine Group.

Blake Alexander at Z-Max and 4-Wide Nationals

CONCORD, NC – Funny Car rookie Blake Alexander has been through some trying experiences in just his first few races in the nitro-breathing Auto Service Plus car. His season of wild rides continued at the 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway last weekend. Blake’s first qualifying pass ended in a fiery mess.

“We had it set up to run a 4.16 or 4.18. I had my hands full on the second half of the run, trying to keep it straight with a hole out. Once I started to slow down, the supercharger back-fired and lifted the body up. I could feel the heat before I could see the flames. I got it stopped and shut everything down. Flames reached the fuel tank and lit the fuel on fire. Ultimately it was a parts failure that caused a lot of damage,” said Alexander, who ran a career-best 4.18 at 302 mph, his first official 300 mph pass.

Tuner and car owner Paul Smith had the Auto Service Plus Funny Car running consistently through qualifying, giving Blake the power to run 4.19 and 4.18 in the final two sessions. Blake would square off with fellow rookie Alexis DeJoria, Johnny Gray and Mike Neff in the first round of eliminations. He came up close at the finish line, just nine thousandths of a second from moving on to the next round. His 4.215 wasn’t enough to best Neff or Gray. Alexander feels that he handled his first 4-Wide experience well.

JULIAN, NC – A week after taking the trophy at Kil-Kare Raceway in his home state of Ohio, Troy Coughlin Jr. went down south and added to his burgeoning drag racing resume with a semifinal finish in the Top ET Classic at Piedmont Dragway.

Racing in Saturday’s $20,000-to-win main event, Coughlin drove his JEGS.com dragster deep into eliminations before losing to former national champion Chip Johnson by a narrow margin. Coughlin also posted a Round 2 finish Friday night and a third-round finish in Sunday’s finale.

“We raced hard and came close but couldn’t quite close out a win this time,” Coughlin said. “I had a .019-second reaction time and ran right on my dial-in in the semis but it still wasn’t enough. Chip was just a little bit better. I was fortunate enough to get a win last weekend but we just couldn’t keep that momentum going.
