Jeg Coughlin Jr., driver of the JEGS/Mopar Dodge Avenger is very excited about the new sponsor addition to their team. “It’s always fun to meet new sponsors interested in your race team. Some we meet at our facility in Delaware, OH, some we meet at their offices, but the one’s that I know really want to be a part of racing, are the people that take the time to come out to the track and see our team in action, and understand the audience which are our fans and customers” Jeg said.

Newburgh almost all the way back from crash

Written by Todd Veney/Pro Sportsman Association

Rock Falls, IL – After a devastating crash two years ago at the Route 66 Nationals in Chicago, where he slammed hard into the wall but escaped uninjured, Alcohol Funny Car veteran Kevin Newburgh is finally making his way back into competition. For Newburgh, a working man from a small town in the heart of the Midwest, the prototypical “little guy,” you don’t just come back overnight. It cost him half a year’s salary to rebuild.

“It really cleaned me out,” says Newburgh, a 43-year-old mechanic at Pillar’s Repair in his hometown of Rock Falls, Ill. “I do this all out of my pocket, and it can be pretty rough sometimes. I had to get a new body and have the chassis front-halved.”

On that fateful run, Newburgh crossed the centerline, corrected, and the next thing he knew, he was into the wall and the body was flying off the car. “I got out of the groove but thought I had it all straightened out,” he says. “I clipped a cone and cranked the wheel hard, and the car just took off like a bullet, shot across the track in the opposite direction, and smacked the wall sideways. The body was ruined and the chassis really got bent up.”

The native of Greeneville, Tenn., who currently leads the NHRA Pro Stock standings, returns to the track this weekend in the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minn., Aug. 16–19.

“I’m definitely ready to get up to Brainerd and back on the track,” said Johnson. “I was ready last Thursday to head up for qualifying, and didn’t want to take a week off. We have some good momentum right now and our Mopar Dodge Avenger is very fast.”

Johnson enters this weekend’s event with four wins on the season, including in two of his last three starts. The J&J Racing driver/owner opened the NHRA’s Western Swing with a victory in the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals, and backed that up with another win at Sonoma the following week. Kristen Dennis rockets to Martin Ironman Victory

Courtesy of 801 Racing

Martin, MI – Kristen Dennis showed how it’s done this past weekend at the final Nitro Jam event of the year. Dennis and her Ladies’ First Pro Fuel Dragster not only won the race, she did it with style.  Dennis recorded a track record 5.193/273.68 in her first round and set her crew, the crowd, and the pits on fire. To top that, Dennis also successfully defended her Saturday night Martin Nitro Jam crown.

“Saturday nights must be lucky for us here in Michigan,” said Dennis. “Winning here last year was fantastic, but this year we earned it and we are going to enjoy this one even more. The fans here are so sweet, and they just kept coming. My hand was starting to cramp from signing so many hero cards. It was really great to meet so many enthusiastic race fans.”

Friday’s fans were treated to a rare event this summer in Michigan; rain. The night’s events were cancelled, and that put all the racers on edge to make it count on Saturday.  The weather was cool, and the stands filled quickly. The fans were there to see Nitro, and Dennis didn’t let them down.

MARTINO TEAMS WITH CHARTER COMMUNICATIONS IN RETURN TO COMPETITION AT BRAINERD

Courtesy of Cagnazzi Racing

Stoney Creek, ON – It’s been a winding road for Mark Martino since he last competed on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series with his Charter Communications Pro Stock Pontiac GXP. But a new partnership with Victor Cagnazzi, that will see Martino run five of the remaining eight events in 2012 with Cagnazzi Racing power, ensures that he will fill the role of “spoiler” quite well when matched up against the touring pros contending for the series championship.

“It’s pretty exciting knowing we’re gonna be running with Cagnazzi power. Everyone who’s ever run his engines does well. So you know we’re looking forward to it,” said an excited Martino. Cagnazzi Racing has a proven track record having won two NHRA Pro Stock World Championships and most recently having put Erica Enders in the winner’s circle at the Chicago and Seattle tour stops, making her the first female driver in history to win an NHRA national event in the Pro Stock category.
