WATSON RACING TEAMS WITH CHRIS HOLBROOK AND THE WORLD’S QUICKEST PRODUCTION CAR!
Written by Bret Kepner
Livonia, MI – It has already been a season of shattered records and stunning achievement for Redford, Michigan, drag racer Chris Holbrook. At the wheel of his Varsity Ford dealership-sponsored 2013 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, the past World Champion began his 2013 racing campaign by clocking a quarter-mile run of 8.504 seconds at a speed of 160.68 miles per hour at the opening event of National Mustang Racers Association in Bradenton, Florida. The effort was more than a quarter-second quicker than any previous performance by a production automobile in factory trim and Holbrook became the first driver to break 160 mph in a stock drag racing vehicle.
One week later, Holbrook entered the National Hot Rod Association’s Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, and won the AAA/SA class championship while producing the quickest elapsed time in the history of the NHRA’s Stock Eliminator division at 8.68 seconds. Then, as owner of Holbrook Racing Engines, Chris beamed with pride when the overall Stock championship found two HRE customers battling for the title. Bo Butner, another previous World Champion, defeated Charley Downing in a race which featured two Ford Mustang Cobra Jets powered by engines personally prepared by Holbrook.

Booher Earns Career First #1 Qualifier
NORWALK, OH – For the second race in a row, a simple parts failure prevented Top Alcohol Dragster’s Brandon Booher from turning a solid qualifying effort into late round results at the Mickey Mart Rewards Cavalcade of Stars Lucas Oil Series race at Summit Motorsports Park. The Illinois driver earned his first number one qualifier position but lost first round when his supercharged entry lost oil pressure prior to staging.
Booher set the pace for the weekend in the opening qualifying session, running 5.386 at 267 miles per hour. He struggled in the second session, but so did the rest of the thirteen-car field, which included Division 3 champions Bill Reichert and Marty Thacker. Running in front of a sold-out crowd of over 45,000 fans, Brandon clicked off a 5.403 at 268 mph pass during the final qualifying session on Saturday night. No one beat his first elapsed time, so he would enter Sunday’s eliminations as the number one qualifier for the first time in his four-year TAD career.
Introducing: “Cool It” Transmission Cooling Unit
Hawk Point, MO – The rise of converter driven race cars in recent years has brought attention to the issue of correctly cooling a transmission between runs. To combat the issue, homemade cooling units using plastic beer coolers and small pumps have been created and used with little success. Recently, Tim McAmis Performance Parts took on the challenge to develop a reliable and effective system to solve this problem and the result was “Cool It.”
Cool It was designed with two stages of cooling which allow the unit to drop transmission fluid temperature in the shortest amount of time ever seen. The first stage uses a heat sink with a cooling fan while the second stage runs the fluid though an ice bath coil. On average, it now takes less than 15 minutes to achieve the proper transmission temperature while using Cool It.
IHRA fleet gets a makeover courtesy of PCD Wraps and Graphics
NORWALK, OH – With new ownership, a new logo and a completely revamped brand, there was only one thing left for IHRA to do: take the new look on the road.
PCD Wraps and Graphics out of Blanchard, Oklahoma made it happen with its specially made wrap designs that will make their way to races across the country on the IHRA tour. The new designs will stand out on the highways and at the tracks, creating just the kind of exposure IHRA was looking for.
PCD president Chase Huffman was brought up on racing. He started coming to the track as a newborn to watch his dad in the late ‘80s and has since driven in both the Hot Rod and Quick Rod divisions, winning his first Quick Rod race at the Tulsa Nationals in 2007. The experience has helped him get PCD – which was started in December – off and running.
