Cayuga opener ushers in 2010 PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Tours
Both series to compete May 21-23 at the fabled drag strip of Toronto Motorsports Park
CAYUGA, ONTARIO – When Carl Spiering won the first Pro Modified Racing Association race held in May of 2005, a
new era in Pro Modified drag racing was established. Since that time, the PMRA has been a big part of the makeup on the Cayuga Dragway at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario, and has been a favorite facility with the fans and the teams.
Canada’s oldest drag strip, which began operations in 1954 and has continued to the present, has traditionally been the season opener and season closer for the PMRA. For several years the series championship was decided during the final event in the fall of each year since the PMRA started racing at the fabled Kohler Road strip in Southern Ontario.
And once again, this time for its sixth season, Cayuga will host the opening round of the 2010 PMRA season, with the Victoria Day Weekend Spectacular May 21-23. A record number of teams in both the PMRA and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series are expected to be ready to do battle on the quarter-mile drag strip.
Doug Morgan and Buddy Forrest Ready Battle in Quick 32 Sportsman Series
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK – The dragster team of Morgan and Forrest had a successful first year in the Quick 32
Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, and team crew chief Doug Morgan said he and driver Buddy Forrest are prepared to take the momentum into this year’s tour.
“We’re ready to rock,” said Morgan, who along with Forrest race in the series’ Top Dragster class. “We’re looking forward to it. We had a successful season last year.”
The Rochester, New York-based team competes with a Spitzer Enterprises dragster, powered by a 638-cubic inch Chevy engine using a nitrous oxide system. The power goes through a two-speed Powerglide to the rear slicks.
The team did not compete in the first event of 2009, but had a good showing for the remaining five events in the six-event tour, qualifying for all other races. Along with a runner-up spot in the Top Dragster class during the Labor Day race at Grand Bend, the team finished the season in style with an overall win during the final Quick 32 Sportsman Series race late in September at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga, Ontario.
Morgan said there are no major changes to the car for 2010.
Roth Racing ready to rumble for upcoming PMRA season
KITCHENER, ONTARIO – The Roth Racing Team debuted a new car in the Pro Modified Racing Association last season, and after a season of some ups and downs, the 1941 Willys team believes 2010 will be a defining year.
“We’re getting ready for the new season,” said team owner Jim Roth. “We’re also getting ready for a more stable year. We’re still on a learning curve.”
With Jim’s son Jeff driving the Willys, the team faced an uphill battle in PMRA events last year, but went out on a high note with a win late in the year. The team placed third in PMRA Championship Point Award Series in 2009.
F.J. Smith to be honored into Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame
CAYUGA, ONTARIO – One of Canada’s top drag racers is to be inducted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in April.
Noted racer and car builder F.J. (Fred) Smith, of Cayuga, Ontario will be honored by his peers in the racing community during the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame Induction Gala April 17 at the Sheraton Center in Toronto, Ontario.
Smith is the main proponent behind the Can-Am Stock/Super Stock Series, which races during many weekend events that the Pro Modified Racing Association and Quick 32 Sportsman Series compete.

Derek Hawker team ready to debut Corvette for PMRA season
New Pro Modified team steps up from Sportsman ranks
CORBYVILLE, ONTARIO (February 11, 2010) – After running just one year in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series, Derek Hawker decided to upgrade and increase his racing effort, with the Pro Modified Racing Association.
His explanation was simple:
“I want to go faster,” he said. “It’s just my thing. I’m not a bracket racer.”
So the Hawker Racing Team, based near Belleville, Ontario, took his two-year old 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, removed the tunnel ram-injected engine, and replaced it with a 526-cubic inch Alan Johnson supercharged unit complete with a PSI Supercharger, Atchison Fuel System, and a Lenco three-speed on the back of the engine.
Hawker said the team will take it slow and easy for the first while with the Vanishing Point Split-Window Corvette.
“This will be our first go with this type of engine and set-up,” he said. “We’ll keep to the low side and start with about 2000 horsepower with the engine and go up from there.”
