Langdon, Kalitta Lead Toyota in NHRA Winternationals Qualifying

POMONA, CA – Top Fuel drivers Shawn Langdon and Doug Kalitta placed fourth and fifth, respectively, to lead Toyota into Sunday’s Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

The two Kalitta Motorsports Toyota drivers have combined to win four of the last seven Winternationals Top Fuel events.

Langdon, returning to the seat of a Top Fuel car after two years in Funny Cars, started the weekend strong, earning the provisional pole on Friday with a 3.699-second pass. He was unable to better his time on Saturday and will begin Sunday’s eliminations from the fourth spot, facing Justin Ashley.

While not among the four drivers breaking into the 3.6’s, Kalitta proved to be among the most consistent cars on the track, earning bonus points in three of the four qualifying runs for finishing in the top three of a session. He will be looking for his third straight Winternationals crown on Sunday, opening up with Brandon Welch.

LANGDON, HAGAN AND COUGHLIN SECURE PROVISIONAL NO. 1 SPOTS AT 2020 SEASON OPENER

POMONA, CA – Shawn Langdon kicked off the 2020 season opener in style, grabbing the Top Fuel provisional No. 1 qualifier spot on Friday at the 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com after making the switch from Funny Car back to Top Fuel dragster.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) also claimed provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the first of 24 races on the 2020 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Langdon knocked off Brittany Force during Q2 to claim the quickest run with a pass of 3.699-seconds at 322.42 mph in his DHL Toyota Top Fuel Dragster to kick off the season. Langdon is looking to start off the season strong after a two year hiatus in the Top Fuel class to run Funny Car. Langdon is chasing his third No. 1 qualifier at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, and 19th of his career.

“There are tracks you go to and it seems like everything just clicks. I could stage this thing in reverse and it seems like it just works out. There are tracks you go to and it feels like you fall out of bed awkwardly. Pomona is one of those tracks I feel like I’ve had good success at. I’m just excited about today. It’s a good start,” said Langdon. “Every run we’re making small little changes trying to get me more comfortable. It’s a big change going back from a Funny Car to a dragster. We feel confident right now. For Connie (Kalitta, owner and crew chief), I know he’s excited.”

Return to Top Fuel Has Shawn Langdon Fired Up for Winternationals and 2020 Success

Pomona, CA – For the first time since 2017 Shawn Langdon will not be sitting behind a 10,000 horsepower engine when he rolls to the starting line for the 60th annual NHRA Winternationals. The 2013 NHRA Top Fuel champion will be returning to the class that started his professional career. His two year stint behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry Funny Car gave the racer a unique experience and perspective but the Californian does not express any race car preference.

“I just want to race,” said Langdon during the Las Vegas PRO test session. “If that means racing a Funny Car…perfect. If that means racing a Top Fuel dragster…perfect. I like racing. To me, it doesn’t matter what I race, I just enjoy having an opportunity to compete and compete for wins and a championship.”

As one of only seventeen racers to win in both Top Fuel and Funny Car Langdon is eager to get back to Top Fuel behind the wheel of the DHL Kalitta Air dragster. The transition was announced over the off-season and the 14-time Top Fuel winner is eager to get back in front of the engine. He is also looking forward to being reunited with crew chief and racing legend Connie Kalitta.

J.R. Todd and DHL Toyota Camry Looking for Funny Car Win at Winternationals

Pomona, CA – The DHL Toyota Camry and driver J.R. Todd will be in hot pursuit of their second NHRA Funny Car world championship this weekend at the NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway in Pomona. Todd will be looking to become the first driver since icon Don Prudhomme to win the historic event in both Top Fuel and Funny Car. He picked up his Top Fuel win in 2007 and will be looking for his tenth career Funny Car victory this weekend.

“We have the same goal we start every season off with – looking for another shot at the championship like we won with the DHL Toyota in 2018,” said Todd. “We didn’t have the season we were hoping for last year, but we’ve regrouped. We have some new crew guys this year and we’ve added some key associate sponsors on board. Things are looking up and we’re hoping on hitting the ground running in Pomona.”

A Funny Car win at the Winternationals would mean a lot to Todd. As a student of NHRA history and a fan of the legends that raced before him he understands the impact of a win to start the season.

Doug Kalitta, Mac Tools Striving for Third Consecutive Winternationals Victory

Pomona, CA – Only two drivers have more Top Fuel wins at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona than perennial NHRA Mello Yello championship contender Doug Kalitta. The veteran driver from Michigan is looking to add one more win and move into a tie for first place on the all-time Auto Club Raceway win list. This season Kalitta will bring a new look Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster to the west coast to start the season and attempt to make it three wins in a row at Auto Club Raceway as well as his third win in a row at the historic Winternationals. The 60th annual Winternationals will be the chance for Kalitta to make another run at his first NHRA Top Fuel championship.

“I love going to Pomona,” said Kalitta. “It’s a place that has always been special and it’s been very good to us. To me, the cool thing about Pomona is the history of the place. I’ve seen so many of the greats race there and I love the museum. I hope the fans take some time to visit there. Personally, I grew up watching Connie (Kalitta) there over the years and it was just the coolest place to race. Hopefully, we can keep running well there.”

TOP FUEL VETERAN DOUG KALITTA AIMS TO KEEP STREAK GOING WITH QUICK START AT 60TH ANNUAL LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

POMONA, CA — If there’s been a constant in recent NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series history, it’s veteran Doug Kalitta performing well at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona to open the year. The longtime Top Fuel standout has advanced to four straight finals at the NHRA opener and won the past two, and Kalitta is eager to keep that streak going.

He’ll look to make it three straight wins at the annual iconic opener, as Kalitta and the rest of the NHRA stars open the 2020 season with this weekend’s 60th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com. It’s a race – as well as a track – that has been good to Kalitta and his 11,000-horsepower Mac Tools Toyota dragster lately, as he swept both Pomona races a year ago. That included the finale to close out 2019 strong, and Kalitta hopes to maintain that momentum while seeking a fifth straight final at the season-opening event.

“The big wins from the end of last year, the U.S. Nationals and the Auto Club Finals, made the off-season easier,” Kalitta said. “We are really focused on winning the championship and that is where we put a lot of attention. I know the team worked hard and we are excited to get back to the track. My confidence level is very high. This Mac Tools team is on a streak at Pomona and we want to keep winning there. We focus on the little things all the time and I think that shows at the start of the season. We really work on staying sharp over the off-season and getting the most out of pre-season testing. I love racing in Pomona and the fans are always awesome.”

Kalitta is ready to get the season underway. “We made an awesome run at the championship last season and I am fired up for this season.
