Schumacher Knows How to Win At Norwalk

Norwalk, OH – Driver of the Scag Power Equipment Top Fuel Dragster needs a turnaround victory for his team.  “I’m looking forward to getting to Norwalk, Ohio. I live in Austin, Texas and it’s been 106 degrees here, so I’m used to the heat. It’s supposed to be hot again this weekend in Ohio and I think that our car is meant for the heat; we’ve got a great ‘hot track tuneup.’ I haven’t been to Norwalk in years, and Midwesterners, those are my people, man. I was raised in Chicago and I love visiting that area. The Bader family gives us an awesome facility in the Midwest, and I love it because I get to see a lot of old friends and family.

“It’s the middle of the season and it’s time for our Scag Power Equipment Top Fuel dragster to get going. We haven’t performed to the level that we’re used to but the guys have been working day in and day out, and I feel that a win is coming, and Norwalk would be a great place to do that. We have a Scag appearance on Thursday, and I look forward to seeing all of our wonderful fans there, and I’m also excited because Scag’s CEO and CFO will be coming out and checking out an NHRA race in-person for the first time so it would be an epic time to go out and do what we do best, and that is win races.”

Early Exit for Tony Schumacher in Bristol; David Davies Advances to Factory Stock Semifinals

BRISTOL, TN – Tony Schumacher last competed at Bristol Dragway in 2018 where he brought home the Thunder Valley Nationals trophy for the sixth time in his illustrious career, making him the winningest Top Fuel driver in the facility’s history. He was hoping his first trip back to Bristol would result in a repeat performance, but his chances at earning another Father’s Day win went up in smoke during the first round of eliminations on Sunday.

As the No. 13 qualifier, Schumacher faced fellow multi-time Top Fuel champion Antron Brown in round one. Schumacher and his Maynard Family/Scag Power Equipment dragster were nearly even with Brown as they passed the 60-foot marker, but a loss of traction near the 330 cone caused Schumacher to slow to a 4.401 while Brown posted a 3.863 E.T. for the win in the opposite lane.

“It’s so anticlimactic to come to a race that you’ve won six times and go out the way we did,” said Schumacher. “We just don’t quite have our combination figured out yet but once we do, we’ll have a great car. I’m not the kind of guy that throws fits and whips helmets. We’ll figure it out, work hard, dig deep, test, and just do what we need to do. I’ve been in this position before; it’s frustrating. I know it’s frustrating for the whole team, they work so darn hard.

Schumacher Knows Success at Bristol with Six Past Victories!

Bristol, TN – “Honestly, I cannot wait to get to Bristol. I know I’ve said that same thing a couple of other times this year about other tracks, but I tell you what, I miss Bristol like no other race track. I sat out last year and in 2019, so this will be my first time in four years competing at Bristol, and I just love it there. I love the fans, I love the facility. I’ve had a lot of success at that track; won it six times, which makes us the winningest pro team to compete at Bristol Dragway. Every time I go out there, I forget how awesome it is until I go stand down on the starting line and take in that amazing view. Another thing that is unique to that facility is that the pro pits are literally right next to the right lane, so we get to take in the show while we work. Every time a car passes by, it reminds us of just how darn fast these cars go.” stated Schumacher.

“Our crew chiefs, Todd Okuhara and Marc Denner, have a good handle on what they’ve diagnosed as something that has been causing us problems this year. Anytime you can take care of a huge problem, something that’s been wreaking havoc for a while, you can’t wait to get to the next race because you’re chomping at the bit to redeem yourself. This weekend can’t come soon enough. We’re getting into town a day early and I’ll be meeting fans at a Scag appearance on Thursday, so if you’re in the area, please come out to Boones Creek Outdoor Power in Gray, Tenn. from 10:00 a.m. to noon, and say hello.”

Schumacher Out Early at New England Nationals

EPPING, NH – Tony Schumacher was looking to make a statement at his first New England Nationals appearance since last competing at the Epping, N.H. event in 2018. He began his bid for a third New England Dragway trophy by qualifying the Maynard Family/Scag Power Equipment in the quick-half of a competitive Top Fuel field. By earning the No. 6 seed, Schumacher drew No. 11 qualifier, Leah Pruett, on race day. During the opening round of eliminations, the eight-time series champ launched off the starting line but his machine started dropping cylinders before he reached halftrack. In the other lane, Pruett made a clean pass for the win, ending Schumacher’s day early.

“I love coming out to this race track. We won here in 2014 and ’15 and had a semifinal finish the last time I was racing here, but this weekend felt promising,” said Schumacher, an 85-time race winner. “Going out early today was really disappointing because we had such a good race car, and qualified in the sixth spot. We just had a bad ignition system first round. You get tired of having to explain why your race day was cut short, but it does happen; things break. But, we’ll step it up. I’m seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The crew is making massive leaps forward with the new parts and pieces we’ve put on the car, and our Maynard Family/Scag Power Equipment dragster is going down the race track, so, we’ll head off to Bristol next which I’m really looking forward to. It’s one of my best race tracks, we’ve had great success there, and we’ll go out there and do our job.”

Tony Schumacher, David Davies Advance to the Quarterfinals at Richmond

NORTH DINWIDDIE, VA – Tony Schumacher recorded a 3.758 E.T. during Q2 to qualify the Scag Power Equipment Top Fuel dragster 11th for the Virginia NHRA Nationals. Schumacher drew Pomona winner Justin Ashley as his first-round competitor and used a 3.792 E.T. to earn the definitive win over Ashley, who lost traction as soon as he stepped on the throttle. Schumacher then faced another heavy-hitter in round two of eliminations, lining up against reigning series champion Steve Torrence. In a battle between two of the titans of the sport, Schumacher and Torrence went into the quarterfinals each having been victorious over the other 19 times in 38 prior rounds of competition. The winningest driver in NHRA Top Fuel history was looking to break the round-win tie but was up in smoke as soon as he launched off the starting line. In the opposite lane, Torrence had troubles of his own, double-stepping at the starting line before hazing the tires down track but was able to hang on for the win.

“It was tricky all day,” said Schumacher, the 2008 Virginia NHRA Nationals Top Fuel winner. “We made a bunch of runs down the track during qualifying, and it was cloudy and cooler, and all of a sudden, today it’s hot and slippery and 110 degrees on the surface. Hey, it’s the same for everybody. I don’t make excuses. We got beat. (Steve) Torrence went out and double-stepped it, and you think, ‘how do you not pull a red light out of that,’ but they held on and did a great job getting down the track. We smoked ‘em right away. As much as you want to blame this or that, we’ll go back and figure it out. We’ll come back out at Epping like the machine that we are, the guys will do their jobs, we have some new clutch plans and we’ll have a new system.”

Capps, Schumacher Help Raise Funds for A Soldier’s Child Charity

MURFREESBORO, TN – NHRA fan-favorites Ron Capps and Tony Schumacher attended the 13th annual A Soldier’s Child Dinner Banquet in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on Friday evening, helping to raise dollars and awareness for the nonprofit that has been near and dear to the hearts of Don Schumacher Racing partners, Joe and Cathi Maynard, since 2008. The event, made possible thanks to presenting sponsor and Maynard family business, ECHO Power Engineering, is the largest fundraiser for A Soldier’s Child, a national organization that aims to serve the children of fallen military personnel who lost their lives while on active duty.

During the evening’s festivities, Capps and Schumacher were introduced on stage in front of the more than 450 guests in attendance. The multi-time NHRA world champions each donated NHRA trackside experiential packages to the event’s silent auction, helping to contribute to the more than $230,000 raised for A Soldier’s Child on Friday night. Their presence also helped to bring awareness to the ‘Last Full Measure of Devotion Society’ endowment program.

“We had a goal of $200,000, and thanks to Tony Schumacher and Ron Capps, whose items brought in $15,000, and all of the wonderful, generous folks in attendance last night, we exceeded our goal by more than $30,000,” said Joe Maynard, an avid drag racing fan and fixture among the DSR and Ron Capps Motorsports pits. “Cathi and I are passionate about veterans, children, and the homeless, in no particular order, and A Soldier’s Child helps both veterans and kids, so this is a very important cause for us.

Early Exit for Tony Schumacher in Charlotte

CONCORD, NC – The winningest Top Fuel driver in NHRA history qualified for the Charlotte NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in dramatic fashion, having to rely on his Q4 pass to secure a spot in the stacked Sunday field. As the No. 15 seed, Tony Schumacher drew Leah Pruett, Brittany Force, and Spencer Massey as his first-round opponents. He took the Maynard Family/Okuma dragster to the finish line beams in 3.753 seconds but it wasn’t enough to set off the win lights against Massey and Force, who clocked a 3.749 and 3.732, respectively. While the E1 loss was a disappointment, Schumacher feels that his team is moving in the right direction and it won’t be long before the race day win lights start rolling in.

“The key to this whole thing is, realizing that we’ve had a lot of tough Sundays,” explained Schumacher of his team’s race day record through the first six events. “When you look at the beginning of the season at Pomona (Calif.), we started with a (Doug) Kalitta match-up, and then had Antron Brown and Mike Salinas in our first quad at Las Vegas, and then, Brittany Force and Steve Torrence in the finals. I mean, give me a break. We’ve had so many tough match-ups this year. This is our fault. We just qualified in the wrong spot and we’re working on some things.

“We had to make a drastic change before the last qualifying run yesterday. We changed a clutch disc and that completely changes the package, and we slid it down the track to get qualified in a tough field at Charlotte. That was an excellent job under pressure, and we did an excellent job on race day. We were in the marquee match-up, and all four cars made 3.70 runs. We were a little slow early and I think we just missed it by one run this weekend. We were just playing slight catch-up, but we made a good change to carry us forward.
