Schumacher, Scag Top Fuel Team Continue to see Progress during Houston Outing

BAYTOWN, TX – Tony Schumacher and the Scag Power Equipment team were solid during qualifying at the final running of the NHRA SpringNationals at Houston Raceway Park. Out of the gate, Schumacher posted a 3.720 E.T. on Friday night, and on Saturday afternoon, the Scag Top Fueler was one of only two cars to make it down the track in the heat of the day, laying down an impressive 3.801-second pass while nearly all nitro-burning teams struggled to adapt to the challenging conditions.

Schumacher started race day from the No. 8 seed to draw No. 9 qualifier Mike Salinas as his first-round opponent. In the NHRA ‘Top Fuel Marquee Match-up’ battle between the two top 10 ranked drivers, the win light went to Salinas. Both drivers smoked the tires early, and both pedaled, but Salinas was able to cross the beams first for the round win.

“The car is obviously great, and we’ve got a great team,” said Schumacher, who departs Houston ranked seventh. “It may not look that way on paper though, and unfortunately, people go off the numbers in drag racing but the light at the end of the tunnel is definitely bright. My team is picking away at it, and we’re taking small steps toward it and pretty soon, we’ll be able to take bigger leaps.

Semifinal Finish for Tony Schumacher in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Tony Schumacher and the Maynard Family Racing team continue to show improvement with each race weekend, and the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, stop No. 4 on the 22-race tour, was no exception. Schumacher secured a Top 10 qualifying position, starting race day from the ninth seed, and the 85-time race winner used his starting line advantage to cross the beams second among his quad to advance to the second round of eliminations.

In round two, Schumacher clocked his best run of the weekend (3.733-seconds) in the heat of the day to win his quad and score a bid to the final elimination round. While Schumacher, the most successful driver in NHRA Top Fuel history, has checked nearly every item on the list, a Wally trophy from a four-wide event has continued to elude him. He was hoping Sunday would be his day, but his 11,000-horsepower machine lost traction early into the run, forcing the eight-time series champion to have to wait until the upcoming Charlotte race to have another shot at a four-wide victory.

“This is a good day for our team,” said Schumacher. “We had a lucky first round and an excellent second round with that 3.73 and we went out and tried to run a 3.70-flat or a .69 in the finals, but it was just a little fast. I’m happy as can be with the performance of the car and Todd (Okuhara) is getting a good handle on things. And, hey, we’re going to a home race next, Houston. We won it in 2020. We live a few hours away and we’ll have a lot of family and friends there cheering us on.”

Mark Pawuk’s Drag Pak Claims Victory at the NMCA Season Opener

BRADENTON, FL – Mark Pawuk drove his Empaco Equipment 2021 Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak to victory this past Sunday at the season-opening NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem event at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Competing in the heads-up Holley EFI Factory Super Cars class, Pawuk faced some stiff competition from the herd of Cobra Jet Mustangs, COPO Camaros, and other Challenger Drag Paks competing in the class. Pawuk is also the first claim the new Direct Connection Contingency Program that pays $10,000 to a Drag Pak driver that wins in the NHRA Factory Stock Showdown or NMCA Factory Super Cars categories. The $10,000 purse is the largest available contingency award from a manufacturer in either class.

With 19 competitors entered in the Factory Super Cars class, Pawuk laid down a solid qualifying effort with a 7.898-second run at over 178 mph to land him in the number six qualifying spot. With the field set for eliminations, Pawuk’s Challenger mowed down the competition with a string of consistent passes on his way to the finals to face opponent Jeff Bragg. At the flash of the tree, Pawuk’s Challenger Drag Pak left first and never looked backed as he ran a mind-numbing 7.80-second pass at 177.67 mph in the heat of the day to Bragg’s losing 8.20-second run.

Early Exit for Tony Schumacher at NHRA Gatornationals

Pawuk, Davies and Walcher make Headway in Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown Series

GAINESVILLE, FL – As the winningest Top Fuel driver in the history of Gainesville Raceway, Tony Schumacher entered the NHRA Gatornationals looking to add to his five Gainesville event wins. After rain washed out qualifying on Friday, and unseasonably cold weather forced NHRA to cut Saturday’s qualifying show short after the first session, Schumacher found himself starting race day from the No. 14 seed out of a 22-car field.

NHRA dubbed Schumacher’s first-round contest with Steve Torrence as the category’s marquee match-up. Against the reigning world champ, Schumacher scored the starting line advantage and maintained the lead aboard the Scag Power Equipment/Manyard Family dragster until just before the finish line when Torrence was able to chase him down and edge past, recording the win with a mere eight-foot margin-of-victory.

“It’s always unfortunate when you only have one opportunity in qualifying, and for us, we had an air line come loose on the fuel system so, we got qualified but ended up on the bottom half of the ladder and paired next to a good car,” said Schumacher of the weekend’s lone qualifying session. “And, that’s fine, I don’t mind running good cars.

Mark Pawuk Resets Both Ends of Factory Stock National Record at Season-Opening Event

GAINESVILLE, FL – Mark Pawuk reset the Constant Aviation Factory Stock Showdown Series national E.T. and speed records during the weekend’s sole qualifying session on Saturday afternoon at the NHRA Gatornationals, the season-opening event for the eight-race series. Pawuk drove his Empaco Equipment Dodge Challenger Mopar Drag Pak to a blistering 7.608-second pass at 183.15-mph to earn the pole position for the third time in his FSS career.

Securing the No. 1 spot was no small feat, as the top eight qualifiers all posted E.T.s that were quicker than the previously-held national record. Included among the top eight was Pawuk’s new teammate, Warren Walcher, who took his machine on a 7.669-second ride to earn the No. 3 starting position at his second FSS event, and first driving for DSR. Rounding out the three-car DSR Factory Stock contingent was David Davies whose 7.787 E.T. secured the No. 11 spot on the elimination ladder out of a stacked 22-car field.

Pawuk’s No. 1 qualifier was fifth for the Kevin Helms/A.J. Berge-led DSR Factory Stock program, and ‘the Cowboy’ is hopeful his top-seeded effort will help propel him to his first Factory Stock winner’s circle celebration on Sunday at Gainesville Raceway. Now in his fifth year competing in the category, Pawuk has visited the final round three times but is eagerly awaiting the day he brings home his first FSS Wally trophy.
