Paul Noakes Wins the Canadian Nitro Nationals!

Courtesy of NDRA

Cayuga, ON – It didn’t take Paul Noakes and Crew Chief Les Mellows long to make their mark in the NDRA Alcohol Funny Car Series presented by Ohsweken Speedway. With bracket car like consistency, Noakes and Mellows put on a dominating performance to claim the event title and grab both the series elapsed time and mile per hour records.

The Meritor Driveforce/Euclid sponsored team laid down a 5.67 in the first round, followed by a 5.70 in the semi-finals and capped the weekend off with a 5.69 in the final round to defeat Cicero, New York native Brian White in his White’s Auto Speed/Freeman Farms Dodge Avenger. “Wow, ya, times were tough and everyone thought we had it covered but I’ll tell you, it took a lot of work,” said an ecstatic Noakes “It’s all up to my crew guy’s and Crew Chief and they’re the best in the business and I can’t thank them enough.”

Of course, Noakes couldn’t do what he does without a great support system in place. “I can’t go without mentioning my sponsors, Meritor Driveforce, Euclid, Harman Heavy Vehicle Specialists and Dr. Rondeau, I got to thank everybody. And I’ve also got to thank the NDRA for putting a great package together, with some great cars and I can really see this series growing like crazy.”

Cayuga, ON – Racing in his first NDRA Alcohol Funny Car Series event, Paul Noakes of London, Ontario put his Meritor/Euclid sponsored Ford Mustang Funny Car in the number one qualifying position with a solid 5.707 elapsed time at 255.73 miles per hour to lead the field into Sunday’s elimination rounds.

Asked how he felt about being the number one qualifier at his first NDRA event Noakes said, “It’s a great feeling! It’s nice to be on top and it’s definitely not a spot we’re used to being in so I definitely have to thank all my guys. Les (Mellows – Crew Chief) is doing a great job; it’s like driving a Cadillac down through there. I bolted on some truck parts from Meritor this year and its makin’ this car really fly. ”

Teets Takes Summit “Clash Of The Titans” Cash

PETERSBURG, VA – In what was the most lucrative win in his career and in Top Sportsman history, Terry Teets didn’t have to go far to get it on Saturday.

Racing close to home at Virginia Motorsports Park, Teets capped off a terrific day with a winning 4.444 at 163.59 miles per hour in the finals of the Summit Racing Equipment Top Sportsman “Clash of the Titans,” which was held at this weekend’s American Drag Racing League (ADRL) U.S. Drags V.

The win against Richmond-area native William Brown III netted Teets a Top Sportsman-record $10,000 prize and one massive winner’s circle smile.

“This is the biggest win I’ve ever had. I love Summit and the ADRL for putting this on,” said Teets, who also credited tuner Wayne Rogers, stepdaughter Sidney Spence and his son, Chris Teets. “It’s a big deal, too, because my brother (Glenn) won (in Top Sportsman) last year here, so we kept it in the family.”

Why decide? Thompson runs both TA/FC and Pro Mod

Written by Todd Veney/Pro Sportsman Association

Clint Thompson doesn’t know what he likes better – Top Alcohol Funny Car or Pro Mod. So he runs both, fielding an Alcohol Funny Car in NHRA competition and driving Don Carter’s MBR-powered ’68 Camaro in Pro Extreme on the ADRL tour.

They’re about as similar as a hairbrush and a can of soup, and, as Thompson quickly discovered, a Pro Mod car requires a much gentler touch on the wheel than a Funny Car, which sometimes has to be manhandled to keep it in the groove.

“You get out of shape in a Funny Car, and when you get off the throttle, usually right you’re back under control,” Thompson says. “A Pro Mod keeps going for another three- or four-tenths of a second, and the next thing you know, the back end’s trying to come around. And you don’t get any warning.”

Deflorian on the Outside Looking in After 2 Sessions at VMP

Written by Toyse Woody

PETERSBURG, VA – Sweltering heat and periodic rain showers left both Black Diamond Motorsports car not qualified after two sessions friday . The 2012 Camaro driven by John Deflorian, Jr. hopped skipped and jumped its way up the Virginia Motorsports Park surface trying to grab a hold of the surface but to no avail.

On his fast track learning curve, the GXP driven by Kevin Bealko in his competition debut with a five speed transmission carved his way to the sixteenth spot in the first qualifying session only to be bumped out in the second session after passing thunderstorms and curfew ended qualifying .

With one qualifying session left on Saturday Black Diamond Motorsports hopes to seat both cars into the tough field .

PETERSBURG, VA – Travis Harvey is hoping his stay on top in Summit Racing Equipment Top Sportsman lasts one more night.

Right now Harvey is the driver to beat at Summit Racing Equipment’s Top Sportsman “Clash of the Titans,” a special one-race event during the American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL) U.S. Drags V at Virginia Motorsports Park.

He went a remarkable 4.141 at 173.43 miles per hour in the massive 35-car Summit Racing Top Sportsman field on Friday, jumping to the top spot of the 32-car qualifying field that will pay out a Top Sportsman record $10,000 to the winner.

“This is a pretty huge event and since it’s $10,000 on the line and Summit was putting it on, I really wanted to come out,” said Harvey, who won Dragstock VIII in 2011. “I tried to put together a run in the 4.10s and that’s what it did.

TIOGA CENTER, NY – Producing top talent in the sportsman drag racing ranks is a key focus for the Joe’s Transmission TNT Super Series.  That has never been more obvious than this past weekend during the IHRA Summit Racing Equipment Pro-Am presented by Amsoil at Skyview Drags in Tioga Center, NY.

In Saturday’s race, Tom drove his 1975 Nova through the Hot Rod field, taking out Kathy Kiekel, Dean Olschewske and Mark Proulx on his way to the semi’s where he met up with fellow TNTSS competitor Jeff Fisher.  Tom got Jeff on both ends of the racetrack and moved into the final against yet another TNTSS regular, Jan Winkowski.
