Troy Coughlin Jr. ready for fresh start at South Georgia event
VALDOSTA, GA – As he enters his fourth season of racing in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Troy Coughlin Jr. is more convinced than ever that he is ready to compete for a championship. To that end, the third-generation pro will begin that quest during this weekend’s Southeast Division event at South Georgia Motorsports Park in Valdosta, Ga.
Coughlin will have multiple chances for a victory behind the wheel of his JEGS.com Super Comp dragster and his JEGS.com ’57 Corvette roadster Super Gas entry.
“I feel really good right now and I think it’s time to start turning on some win lights,” Coughlin said. “This year, I’m going to focus a bit more on chasing points in Super Comp and Super Gas. My ultimate goal would be to finish in the top 10 in both classes. This weekend’s race would be a great place to get the ball rolling.”
Records Fall as Meadors, Goodguys Racing Team Leave Mark on WCOPM Season Opener
Sonoma, CA – The Pro Mod drag racing record books took a beating this past weekend at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California as several class heavyweights did battle in an open 8 car show promoted by the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods.
After qualifying was over Saturday evening, Southern Californian Dan Nickelson had run the quickest ET ever for a Pro Mod, clicking off a 5.706 @ 251.53 in his ‘02 Dodge Viper landing him atop of the qualifying sheet. In the first round of eliminations, Nickelson backed up the historic number with a 5.736 @ 248.43 establishing the earlier 5.706 as a new national record. It was also in qualifying that Marc Meadors driving the “Pure Hell2” ’69 Camaro Pro Mod Meadors became the first converter-driven blown pro mod to break the 250 MPH barrier clicking off a 252mph blast. But there was more to come. Much more.
No big changes for Jeff Moser and his Top Dragster team in 2013
BAMBERG, ON – Jeff Moser and the MoBoyz Racing Team are not planning any major changes for the upcoming Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts.
We’re taking the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ attitude, said team driver Moser. We’re pretty happy with the tune-up on the car as it is.
The Top Dragster team was successful in 2012, finishing third in series points, along with a pair of wins, at the Cayuga Dragway and at Martin, Michigan. The team also qualified for all Quick 32 Sportsman Series events last year, and has already been racing in 2013. Moser added they have been to Florida to compete in IHRA racing, and placed third during a divisional event at Immokalee Regional Raceway. The team also plans to race in North Carolina and South Georgia before the start of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series in 2013.
IHRA welcomes two new tracks to member track family
NORWALK, OH – The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) is pleased to welcome New London Dragway in Virginia and Brainerd Optimist Dragstrip in Georgia to the IHRA family of member tracks.
New London Dragway, built in 1958 and located just south of Lynchburg, will be a welcome addition to Division 1 joining five other tracks in the state of Virginia. Brainerd Optimist Dragway, located in Ringgold, Georgia, is undergoing a massive improvement project and should prove a destination track for racers in the area very soon.
The two facilities bring the IHRA’s track count to 103 strong in 29 states and territories, four Canadian provinces and two additional countries in New Zealand and Aruba.
Early Regional Exit Will Not Detour Ahten from Quest
Chandler, AZ – Johnny Ahten’s weekend at Firebird International Raceway ended in the first round with an expensive trip down the quarter mile. Ahten’s pride took a hit with the loss, but so did his pocketbook. During the run a section of the rear wing bent and a brand new set of tires ended up getting chunked. This is not the way Ahten Racing wanted to start the first West Regional race of the year.
“I’m still working on the jigsaw puzzle that is this car,” said Ahten. “I know once we get things in the right place she will go down the track the way I know she can. The team and I will not give up the fight to return to the 5.30’s.”
Qualifying was a mixed bag for the Island Renovations / 801 Racing / Fireman’ Brew Team. In the first round the Stump Puller experienced tireshake and a loss of traction. The scoreboard lit up with a 11.036 elapsed time and a pedestrian-like 80.41 mph. The second round of qualifying held more hope. Johnny laid down a 5.526/252.95 that included a quick pedal slap to cure some down track tireshake. That pass that was good enough for the #6 slot with one round of qualifying to go.
