Courtesy of Jegs

COLUMBUS, OH – With a broad smile on his face, third-generation racer Troy Coughlin Jr. drove to a pair of runner-up finishes during this weekend’s seventh annual JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway.

Coughlin’s whirlwind weekend began on Thursday when he drove his JEGS.com Super Comp dragster to a runner-up finish in the postponed North Central Division Lucas Oil Series event from July.

With his confidence soaring, Coughlin repeated the feat Sunday when he claimed a second runner-up finish in the Super Comp class in the JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals race.

The former U.S. Nationals champion also made his debut in the Top Dragster class behind the wheel of his uncle John Coughlin’s 200-mph JEGS.com dragster and drove to a very respectable round 3 finish. All told, Coughlin won 14 elimination rounds during the four-day event.

COLUMBUS, OH – A total of nine champions were crowned Sunday at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway with Jason Coan of Kokomo, Ind., and Jeremy Duncan of Charlestown, Ind., leading the way with victories in Comp and Super Stock, respectively.

The event featured a massive field of 525 competitors from all over the U.S. and Canada, making it the second largest turnout since the inaugural Columbus SPORTSnationals event in 2005.

Coan, whose lengthy résumé includes a win at the 2009 JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals, collected his second win after driving his four-cylinder powered dragster to a final round win over Dave Yediny of Nazareth, Pa. Coan left the starting line with a very competitive .016 reaction time and extended the lead with an 8.16 to defeat Yediny’s L/A Opel.

Duncan, the runner-up at the 2010 JEGS Northern SPORTSnationals, took his Camaro one step further when he defeated former world champion Anthony Bertozzi in the Super Stock final. Both drivers made exceptional runs with Duncan taking the victory by a margin of just five-thousandths of a second at the finish line.

NORWALK, OH  – B1 Racing Pro Extreme driver Josh Hernandez took runner-up honors in the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V, earning himself a berth in the upcoming ADRL Battle for the Belts.

Hernandez took the No. 6 qualifying spot with a 3.696 -second pass at 204.35 mph in rain-shortened qualifying and faced off against veteran Quain Stott. In a thrilling pedal-fest, Hernandez took the finish line ahead of Stott, 4.349 to 5.194, setting up a faceoff with 2010 World Champion Frankie Taylor in the quarter-finals.

“When I saw that we had Frankie in round two, I knew we had our hands full,” Hernandez said. “I really didn¹t worry though, because Troy [Critchley] and Rick [Hickman, crew chiefs] turned up the wick on the B1 Corvette and gave me a great car.”

Against Taylor, Hernandez left the line first and fought off the hard-running champ, taking the stripe with a 3.785 to 4.353.

Castellana Leads Winners List At Ohio Drags V

Courtesy of ADRL

NORWALK, OH – A year ago, Mike Castellana wasn’t sure he would be racing in 2011.  Now, the Pro Nitrous standout is on the verge of a world championship in the American Drag Racing League (ADRL).

Castellana had another race to remember on Saturday, running 3.799 at 197.42 miles per hour to knock off Stan Allen in a great side-by-side race during the finals of the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V at Summit Motorsports Park.

A year after being diagnosed with cancer, Castellana is now cancer-free and has four wins in 2011. The Al-Anabi Racing driver also maintains a near-insurmountable points lead heading into the final event of the season, the LenMar Motorsports World Finals, which takes place Oct. 21-23 at Texas Motorplex.

“I wasn’t even sure I was going to race this year,” Castellana said. “I was just happy to be here racing, and I came out and enjoyed myself all year. This team has just been unbelievable.”

Students got a close-up look at the Pro Extreme Corvette campaigned by B1 Racing in ADRL competition as well as the safety equipment that protects it’s driver, Joshua Hernandez.

“It is so great to see the eyes of these young kids light up when they see something like this for the first time,” crew chief Rick Hickman commented.

“The children have great questions and it is a pleasure to be able to share the racing experience with them,” he said.

Rain Wipes Out Day 1 Of Ohio Drags V, Sat Qualifying Starts at 9 AM

Courtesy of ADRL

NORWALK, OH – After steady rain led to the cancellation of racing on the first day of the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V at Summit Motorsports Park, the American Drag Racing League (ADRL) announced a schedule change for Saturday’s racing.

There will now be two rounds of qualifying on Saturday for all classes, with the first scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

The second round of qualifying is slated for 12 p.m., with eliminations set to follow in all classes at its regularly scheduled time of 3:30 p.m.

The inclement weather didn’t allow for any racing on Friday, leading ADRL officials to decide on two qualifying sessions on Saturday before eliminations for what is another impressive turnout of competitors.

NORWALK, OH – Numbers. It’s all about the numbers for B1 Racing Extreme Pro Mod driver Josh Hernandez this weekend as he attempts to break into the top eight as he competes in the Summit Racing Equipment Ohio Drags V at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

At the conclusion of the last ADRL event two weeks ago, Hernandez had fallen into ninth place – a mere 24 points out of his team’s chance to represent the country of Bahrain in the ADRL’s Battle for the Belts. The Ohio Drags are the last race to earn points for the event.

“We’re ready,” Hernandez stated confidently. “The past few days I’ve been extremely anxious to get up here to Norwalk to put it all on the table and get the racing started.

“There’s no denying we’ve had a tough year. This weekend is really important to the whole team, not only to get into the Battle for the Belts, but also because we know we’ve finally got this car running great, and we want to prove it.

Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk, Ohio is just under four hours from Janis’ Elma, NY shop. Many of Janis’ friends, family, and fans from Western New York are expected to be making the trip to cheer on Janis and his team.
