Coughlin upsets Pruett in opening round of Pro Mod action

Courtesy of Jegs

HOUSTON, TX – Winning any round of drag racing is nice, but winning one on a holeshot is extra special.

That’s what JEGS.com Pro Mod driver Troy Coughlin pulled off Saturday in the first round of NHRA Pro Mod Series presented by ProCare Rx action at Royal Purple Raceway. Coughlin turned a quick .040-second reaction time into a victory over Leah Pruett, the No. 3 driver in the Pro Mod points standings.

“Any time you can have a gameplan and can go execute that gameplan and be on the winning side of it is definitely cool,” Coughlin said. “She ran a lot faster than we did, so we’ve got a lot of work to do to try and pick it up, but it is pretty cool to get the win.”

Coughlin made a pass of 5.997 seconds at 247.70 mph, beating Pruett to the finish line by about 12 feet after Pruett ran 5.972 at 249.86 mph. The difference was Coughlin’s sizable .056-second advantage on the Tree.

Chris Bondi Returns to PBSS with Renewed Effort for 2012 Season

Courtesy of PBSS

AURORA, ON – With a switch to racing fuel for the 2012 Pro Bike & Sled Series presented by Wiseco Performance Products, Pro Sled racer Chris Bondi is hoping for better results this year.

“We tried an increase of boost and racing fuel rather than pump gas late last year, and the result was an 8.52 at 153 mph”, noted Bondi. “We will step it up for 2012 in the PBSS with the race fuel, and hopefully be running in the low eights.”

Bondi recorded times of 8.87 at 143 mph last year on pump gas with his sled, and believes he can cut down his times significantly during his trips down the quarter-mile with the new VP Racing Fuels and an increase in boost on the sled’s engine.

He rides a Ski-Doo Renegade powered by a 1200-cc supercharged engine using an EFI fuel system and a CVT (constant velocity) clutch. He acts as crew chief and driver, with help from his crew, Tania and Jake McFadden.

NHRA ADDS VP’S C9TM TO APPROVED FUEL LIST

Courtesy of VP Fuels

SAN ANTONIO, TX – VP Racing Fuels today announced the addition of its new C9TM unleaded formula to the NHRA’s Approved Fuel List. “C9 is an impressive new fuel that will outperform the standard 110 fuels available in the field, including our own,” said Jim Kelly, VP’s Director of Race Fuel Sales.

“It’s a non-oxygenated formula that in dyno tests made 4-6 more HP and torque than the 110 baseline. With an octane rating of 96 (R+M/2), C9 is ideal for Stock and Super Stock applications with compression ratios up to 11:1.”

Track tests in the Northeast on the quarter mile and on oval tracks showed C9 will have an immediate impact on performance regardless of the type of racing. Notably, it was recently selected as the Spec Fuel of the ACT American Canadian Tour and Castrol Series in Canada.

In addition to the performance gains seen on the ACT tour and in stock and super stock drag cars, ethanol-free C9 is an ideal fuel for improving performance in crate engines as well as competition quads, motocross bikes and sleds. Because C9 is ethanol-free, it can be of particular benefit in marine racing applications.

Demke to Start another Streak in Texas

Courtesy of 801 Racing

Baytown, TX – Chris Demke and his Peen Rite Top Alcohol Dragster are heading down to Texas to start another winning streak. A semi-final loss at the Vegas National event stopped a 2-0 start to the year. A few weeks off provided the time needed to freshen things up on the Peen Rite/801 Racing entry. The confidence from those wins at Pomona and Gainesville are still with the Team.

“The year began with two incredible wins,” said Demke. “Now we have things back together and ready to go rounds. We have a new partnership that will allow us to continue having fun and put on a great show for the fans.”

In 2009, Demke had a wild ride and put on quite a show for all in attendance.  In the finals against Duane Shields, while leading the race, Demke’s Dragster made a move to the wall. With some nifty driving, Demke avoided the wall, but was now headed across the track into the other lane. Narrowly avoiding Shields, Demke saved the car but not the win. In 2010, a semi-final loss ended Team Peen’s weekend.  Last year the Maddern Racing Team decided not to attend the event.

Kristen Dennis Thriving off Detractors en route to Fast Start

Courtesy of IHRA

MAGNOLIA, TX – Just three years ago Kristen Dennis had only dreamed of one day becoming a professional racer.

After all, what would a mother of two from Magnolia, Texas – population 1,100 – do with a fast car and a big dream. As it turns out, win. And win a lot.

Dennis finally decided to go racing three years ago when she started her own team and so far that decision has turned into one of the most unlikely success stories around. In just two seasons Dennis has compiled one NHRA victory and two IHRA Nitro Jam wins all in less than 50 passes behind the wheel. Certainly not a bad start for someone who has used the motivation of being told she can’t to go out and prove that she can.

“I knew I could do this no matter what anyone said. I have used the few people telling me that I couldn’t do this to motivate me more. They are the ones I am proving to that I can do it with my success as a driver and team owner,” Dennis said. “I certainly don’t take any of this for granted. I just have to push myself that much harder to prove that I can keep winning and not to let my team or the fans down.”

And Dennis didn’t just go for any ordinary old car for this journey. No, she decided to go a different route by diving straight into the power, speed and thrill of nitromethane. Dennis decided for her first ride she would get behind the wheel of a 4,000 horsepower nitro-powered dragster to guide her down the quarter-mile.
