Ohio native Morgan looking for home-state luck in Norwalk

NORWALK, OH – Lucas Oil Ford driver Larry Morgan hopes Summit Motorsports Park can bring some more good fortune his way Larry Morganduring this weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Morgan’s most recent final-round appearance was here at his hometown track in 2011, and the veteran Pro Stock competitor believes his team can get back there again.

“We can get back to another one,” Morgan said. “I can do the part of letting the clutch out on time, but if I could get everything in line we’d be much better off. If I can let the clutch out on time and then run well, we’d do better. But getting all those things together is a pretty tough deal. All I can do is work on that.”

Morgan has been solid behind the wheel recently, cutting good lights against Pro Stock champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. and points leader Erica Enders-Stevens in the last two races, but getting a handle on the tune-up of the Lucas Oil Mustang has been difficult.

“I think we’re making progress, but there are some things we’re doing that aren’t the right thing,” Morgan said. “We’re just doing the best we can do at this point. We’re trying.”

Morgan has made some solid passes at recent races, but he knows he needs to pick up some elapsed time to be able to better compete with the top of the Pro Stock class.

“I just need to do better,” Morgan said. “I’m having a difficult time. We’ve been doing a lot of testing of different things, but some of it hasn’t been working so well. But we’ll get there. We just need time.”

The track in Norwalk is two hours from Morgan’s home base of Newark, Ohio, so he will have plenty of support this weekend.

“Norwalk is a good race because you get to see all the people who try to figure out what you do for a living during the year,” Morgan said. “I’ve got a lot of fan support there — and a lot of support everywhere — and I love the fans.”

Qualifying for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals will be held at 4:45 and 7:15 p.m., Friday and Saturday, and eliminations begin at noon, Sunday. ESPN2 will carry all qualifying and elimination action.
