Mike Henry Back On Track

Written by Jeremy Gordon

San Francisco, CA – Mike Henry has been a tough competitor in every class that he has competed in including the Pro Slammers Door Car Association.  But, after he stepped his program up over the winter things didn’t go as planned.  He and his team struggled with the car and the new 773ci nitrous engine.

“I made 13 passes and had to keep it off the wall or pedal it on every run”, says Henry.  We saw him at Sonoma Raceway early the year and he was doing 2ft wheelies at half track.  By the 3rd race he was calling it quits after spending too much money and not making any progress.  We saw his car for sale on racing junk and we thought for sure the west coast standout was finished.

Surprisingly, we saw him back out last weekend at Sacramento Raceway’s Fox Hunt.  Not only was he back with his Camaro he also qualified #1 for the 6.90 Slammers class with a career best 6.91 at 198mph.  He then stepped it up in the semi-finals when he faced off with Ralph Willis’s blown 1953 Corvette when he clocked a perfect 6.900 at 200mph.

Although he couldn’t make the final round call we were glad to see him and his team back.  We asked Mike Henry what did he do to turn things around and he said, “A good friend of mine stepped in to help us run the rest of the season and we took the car to Sarmento Fabrication where Dennis Sarmento straightened out my chassis.  This is the best this car has ever ran and it was on a rail every pass.  I worked with Lepone Performance Tuning on the nitrous tune-ups and you see what the results were”.

Henry says none of this could have been possible if it weren’t for the people that support him which includes: His wife Deneitra, daughter Mieshael, son Michael Henry III, DXL Transport, Pat Watson and family, Joe Lepone Jr., Gotelli Speed Shop, PSR Enterprises, all his friends and fans.  Mark your calendars to see Mike Henry at the Governor’s Cup on September 14-15 at Sacramento Raceway Park.
