Massey, Battery Extender team win Monday for first title of year in rain-delayed NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway

COMMERCE, GA – Spencer Massey had to wait an extra day at Atlanta Dragway but it was worthwhile considering he and the Battery Spencer Massey - Comp Plus - Roger RichardsExtender Powered by Schumacher team won their first NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series title of the season.

Massey, who defeated points leader Doug Kalitta in the championship round, eliminated Don Schumacher Racing and former points leader Antron Brown in the semifinals.

“That is not an easy day of racing,” Massey said. “When you race a DSR teammate in the semifinals and Antron had such a great race car we knew it was going to be tough. It was tricky out there for sure but these guys pulled together and we got the win.”

In Funny Car, DSR’s Ron Capps and Matt Hagan advanced to the semifinal round.

A persistent rain on Sunday forced postponement of the NHRA Southern Nationals to Monday, a day on which Massey also won a title in 2011. Massey’s win was No. 224 for motor sport’s largest racing team.

DSR and the Mello Yello Series heads to Heartland Park Topeka in Kansas for the next event that begins with qualifying on Friday afternoon.
