MASSEY AND BOHL WINNERS IN THUNDER VALLEY

LEXINGTON, OK – Winners were crowned yesterday for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder in the NHRA Div 4 South CentralHeartland at Thunder Valley Raceway Park as each champion took home their share of the event purse and contingency postings along with bragging rights and the champion’s trophy.

A Texas-Oklahoma showdown was on full display as Spencer Massey, Fort Worth, Texas, and Monroe Guest, Bixby, Okla., took to the starting line in the Alcohol Dragster final round. Massey made Texas proud; running a victory pass of 5.607 seconds, 256.26 mph to easily beat Guest who ran 10.462 seconds, 91.86 mph with issues right off the start.

In the Top Alcohol Funny Car final round, Andy Bohl, Racine, Wis., ran 5.586 seconds, 263.54 mph to soundly defeat Scott McVey, Ile Des Chenes, Manit., who suffered mechanical issues and could only watch as Bohl disappeared down track.

The audience was on their feet, as fellow Oklahoman Kevin Self, Caddo, Okla., won the champion’s trophy in the Comp Eliminator final round. Self hit a winning pass of 7.785, 162.24 to handily defeat Brian Browell, Lafayette, Ind., 8.140, 116.97.

Tommy McPhillips, Forney, Texas, almost doubled up, claiming the champion’s trophy in Super Gas and just falling short in the Super Comp final round. Phillips, Forney, posted a runner-up pass of 8.880, 181.01 just giving enough leeway to Taryn Greene, Burleson, Texas, 8.885, 178.53 in the Super Comp finale. In Super Gas the finale, McPhillips hit a winning pass of 9.911, 166.72 outlasting Heidi Robison, Gardner, Kan., 9.888, 163.96.

In the Top Sportsman Presented by Sunset Performance finale, Larry Demers, Carroll, Iowa, ran 7.153, 191.08 to edge out Bob Gulitti of Tomball, Texas, 6.721, 204.31 for the champion’s trophy while Lynn Ellison, Central City, Ky., had an easy time, running 6.322, 213.82 beating out Michael Greene, Burleson, Texas, who fouled at the line in the final round of Top Dragster Presented by KPE.

Sportsman Motorcycle Presented by Harley-Davidson was also on display over the weekend as John Fitzpatrick, Park City, Kan., clocked in at 8.774, 139.42 defeating Robert Sanders, Cypress, Texas, 9.110, 140.86.

Other drivers visiting the winner’s circle were Slate Cumming in Super Stock; Austin Williams in Stock Eliminator; and Dell Hall in Super Street.

A number of specialty events were also contested with Jimmy Hidalgo Jr., winning in Stock/Super Stock Combo; Raymond Miller in Super Comp Gambler; Clark Mundt in Super Gas Gambler; Austin Williams in Super Street Gambler; and Philip Yates in Bike Gambler.
