DSR scores first double-up victory of 2014 with Capps, Schumacher at NHRA New England Nationals in Epping

EPPING, NH – It was a picture-perfect day for the Don Schumacher Racing organization at the NHRA New England Nationals in Tony Schumacher, Epping - Roger Richards - Comp PlusEpping, N.H.

DSR enjoyed its 39th nitro double-up after Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team and Ron Capps’ NAPA AUTO PARTS team scored victories in Top Fuel and Funny Car on Sunday afternoon at New England Dragway.

It was Schumacher’s second victory of the season in two final round appearances.

“We just have a good car, we’re getting better,” said Schumacher. “We struggled for so long and Mike Green and Neal (Strausbaugh) have worked so hard on the six-disc clutch and I think it’s coming along at the right time.

“I couldn’t ask for a better weekend, I have my son Michael here with me.”

It was Schumacher’s 74th career event title and only one NHRA track remains, Atlanta Dragway, where The Sarge has yet to score a title. The U.S. Army team moved into fifth place in NHRA Mello Yello points standings.

In Funny Car, Ron Capps scored his 42nd career victory by defeating Alexis DeJoria in the final round of Sunday’s eliminations.

“To get a win, it feels so good for this entire NAPA team,” Capps said of his first triumph in 19 races. “Chase Elliott has been racking it up on the NASCAR side and we really needed to get a win for NAPA and what a better place to do it with all the NAPA folks from Boston and Maine and the entire northeast here this weekend. This has just been a great weekend.”

The last time two DSR teams doubled-up for the win was at Brainerd, Minn. last August when Capps and Spencer Massey collected the Wally trophies. Capps and Schumacher doubled-up at the Phoenix race in February 2013. It was the 39th double-up for DSR nitro teams and DSR now has 228 NHRA wins.
