CONSISTENT FUNNY CAR RUNS FOR CHAD & HUNTER GREEN BRINGS PROMISE AT NHRA NORTHWEST NATIONALS DESPITE EARLY LOSSES
KENT, WA – After a tough month of June with hot and humid weather, Chad and Hunter Green faced a new challenge with cooler and
overcast conditions at this weekend’s Muckleshoot Casino NHRA Northwest Nationals with their nitro-burning Funny Cars.
The popular father-son duo was seeking more consistent runs in the unique weather and Chad quickly established that in the first round of qualifying with a stellar 3.928 which put his CGM Bond-Coat Ford Mustang in the No. 2 position after Friday’s session. In Saturday’s qualifications, father Chad continued his solid showings with 3.943 and 3.959, as he finished sixth in the 16-car field.
Meanwhile, Hunter Green has made a rapid climb with the CGM Pronto Auto Services Dodge Hellcat in his “rookie” Funny Car season and that learning process was different for the young Texas racer. After losing traction on Friday’s qualifying pass, Hunter returned with a solid 4.039 recording and he achieved a starting position for Sunday’s eliminations.
In Sunday’s eliminations, only a super reaction off the starting line by opponent Alexis DeJoria kept Chad Green from advancing to the quarterfinals, as Chad clicked the finish line lights with a better time of 3.915 to DeJoria’s 3.936. With times of 3.915, 3.928, 3.942 and 3.959, Chad’s Bond-Coat Ford Mustang is primed for another winning performance like earlier this year at the NHRA Gatornationals. The next NHRA national event is set for this weekend (July 25-27) at Sonoma, Calif., with the Denso Sonoma Nationals.
“We really felt good about our race car now after we put a new front half in the chassis before the Seattle race,” said C. Green. “We are going in a positive direction right now. We just need to go some rounds in the races. We know we have a car to do that. Alexis cut a great reaction light against myself and J.R. Todd today. This weekend, the track and conditions were just better than most people thought with the cooler weather. We haven’t had that kind of weather since March at Pomona. Lately the races have had hot weather. It makes it tricky for the teams.”
Hunter Green had the tough task of going against three-time NHRA World Champion Ron Capps in the opening round of eliminations with his Pronto Auto Services Dodge Hellcat. Green’s mount lost traction early in the first-round action and Capps, who finished runner-up Sunday, advanced to the next round.
“I’m still learning with these cars, and I made a mistake in qualifying by clipping the wall,” said H. Green. “I know I’m still growing with the high-horsepower cars, and this is a new team which just started this year. You can’t just jump into this category and expect to be winning immediately. And next week is coming quickly for Sonoma. So, we get to reset and be ready to go this Friday. I have never raced at Seattle before this week or at Sonoma. I’m anxious to go there this week.”
The NHRA nitro competition returns to action this week with the NHRA Denso Sonoma Nationals as qualifying begins Friday, July 25, at 5:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. PDT followed by Saturday’s qualifying sessions at 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. PDT. The final eliminations will begin on Sunday, July 27, at 10:30 a.m. PDT.
The NHRA Denso Sonoma Nationals telecast will get underway on Sunday, July 27, at 4 p.m. EDT/1 p.m. PDT on the Fox Sports 1 Network.
