Victory Motorcycles returns to partner with Matt Smith Racing for 2017

MEDINA, MN – Victory Motorcycles will return to the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series in 2017, as the company matt-smith-2016-pomona-sundaywill again partner with two-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Matt Smith and his successful Matt Smith Racing team.

Victory Motorcycles, a division of Polaris Industries Inc., represents the first all-new American-made motorcycle from a major corporation in nearly 60 years, and is rapidly making impressive gains in the cruiser and touring motorcycle marketplace.

Victory joined the NHRA in 2015 with Smith and has been running a two-motorcycle team for the last two years, with Smith’s wife Angie also racing a Victory Gunner.

“It means a lot to me that Victory is coming back,” Matt Smith said. “We’ve been developing a new motor for the last several months, and we’re doing new bodywork for the 2017 season. We should be even better next year.”

INDIANAPOLIS – Matt and Angie Smith, the only husband/wife duo in the professional ranks of NHRA Drag Angie Smith - 2016 IndyRacing, may occasionally have to race each other on the track. “We enter every race with the same goal, to win,” Angie said. “Whether it’s Matthew or me, we fight with everything we have to get that Wally (trophy) at the end of the day. We are a true team, both in our personal lives and at the races, and it’s awesome to know my husband and best friend is also my teammate and crew chief.

BRAINERD, MN – Cheered on by an enthusiastic group of Polaris employees up for the Twin Cities, Victory Angie Smith - 2016 Brainerd, SundayMotorcycles factory riders Matt and Angie Smith did their best to show off in front of their title sponsors during Sunday’s eliminations of the 35th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

Just as it was in qualifying, Matt did a bit better than his popular wife, racing past Hector Arana Sr. to the quarterfinals before losing to Hector Arana Jr. Angie took her shot at red-hot pro Angelle Sampey and pulled off a big starting-line advantage, only to be caught and passed downtrack in the day’s opening session.

“There is something binding up in these motors whenever they got hot and it’s just robbing us of horsepower,” Matt said. “All three days here the Victory Gunner ran perfect in the first round of the day, and then it would bind up and slow down in the second pass of the day. Unfortunately, that trend continued today in eliminations.
