Ron Capps Advances to Semifinals in Denver, Maintains No. 2 Ranking

MORRISON, CO – After capturing victory No. 74 last month, Ron Capps was looking to etch his name in the Bandimere Speedway history books by clinching his milestone 75th NHRA triumph on Sunday at the final running of the NHRA Mile-High Nationals in Morrison, Colo. near Denver.

Surprisingly, the second-winningest Funny Car driver in NHRA history only had one prior Bandimere triumph to start the weekend. His sole Denver victory came from the 2009 event, but the three-time and twice-defending world champion knew he and his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra Funny Car team would have the combination to make a solid run for the last Mile-High Nationals Funny Car trophy.

Capps started race day from the No. 5 position after recording the quickest E.T. in two out of four qualifying sessions to collect six bonus points. The four-time finalist in 2023 drew Terry Haddock as his first opponent on race day and used his starting line advantage coupled with a solid E.T. to outpace Haddock. Round two featured a match-up between the 2022 No. 1 and 2 ranked drivers with Capps lining up opposite Robert Hight. After defeating a tire-smoking Hight and securing a spot in the upcoming NHRA Northwest Nationals Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, Capps faced another heavy-hitter in the semifinals in Matt Hagan. The former teammates pulled up to the starting line ready to battle for their spot in the final round and while Capps posted a solid and quicker 4.057 E.T., Hagan’s near-psychic .008 reaction time allowed him to propel through the finish line beams first to claim the holeshot victory.

Capps Looking for Win #75 on the Mountain

Morrison, CO – The Mile-High Nationals serves as the kick-off to the three-race Western Swing. Capps is a nine-time winner on “the swing” with one Denver triumph, four wins in Seattle, and four in Sonoma.

As a member of the Toyota Gazoo Racing team, Capps is vying to win Toyota’s 200th NHRA trophy (current Toyota NHRA win count: 199).

Capps will participate in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday, and will attempt to win his third Mission Foods specialty race. The three-time and twice-defending series champ begins the Western Swing ranked second in the Funny Car standings with only four points separating him from the No. 1 ranked driver.

As a 74-time national event champion, Capps is seeking his milestone 75th career victory.

Ron talks about Denver, “Bandimere Speedway is an incredible facility and we’re all sad to see it go away after this weekend. It’s got an incredible history and legacy, and the Bandimere family and what they’ve brought to NHRA will be hard to replace.

Ron Capps Experiences Rare Second-Round Exit at Norwalk

NORWALK, OH – Though Ron Capps’ weekend at the NHRA Norwalk Nationals ended in the second round, the three-time and reigning Funny Car world champion had another solid race weekend overall in his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra. The winner of the recent Bristol, Tenn. event racked up several bonus points in qualifying while also securing another Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge win at Summit Motorsports Park.

Capps was the provisional No. 1 qualifier on Friday night after clocking a 3.898-second E.T. at 331.28 MPH, earning three bonus points. He used a 3.934 E.T. in the second session to defeat Chad Green in the first round of the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. He then powered to his quickest pass of the event, a 3.887 E.T., to beat fellow championship challenger Robert Hight and his 3.933 E.T. for his second #Fast2Tasty Challenge victory. It was also the quickest pass of the session, giving Capps another three bonus points.

“To go up there and be either low E.T. or close to low E.T. every session is big,” Capps said. “Of course, winning the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge is a huge deal for us, especially at this racetrack. Not only the championship bonus points that comes with it, but it just set us up for a great race day today.”

Ron Capps Wins Second Mission #2Fast2Tasty Funny Car Challenge at Norwalk

NORWALK, OH – For the second time this season, Ron Capps won the Mission #2Fasty2Tasty Funny Car Challenge when he defeated Robert Hight in the final round of the NHRA Norwalk Nationals edition of the specialty event.

In what was the final round of both the challenge and qualifying for Sunday’s elimination rounds, Capps raced his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra Funny Car to a winning pass of 3.887 seconds at 327.74 MPH to the losing run of Hight’s 3.933 at 290.44.

“I’d love to give the trophy to Mr. (Bill) Bader and all these Norwalk fans. These fans are unbelievable,” said Capps following the win. “The championships, races – everything has to go through that car with (crew chief) Jimmy Prock and Robert Hight. I would like to think most of the teams say the same thing about our NAPA car. I don’t even know what the money is for winning it, but we get three championship points that go in our bank, and that is huge.”

Capps, who has qualified for the specialty race four times, is the only Funny Car competitor to win the challenge twice. For his efforts, he was rewarded with a $10,000 purse in addition to the championship points.

Ron Capps Races to Provisional No. 1 Qualifier at NHRA Norwalk Nationals

NORWALK, OH – Ron Capps, driver of the NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra, continued his hot streak coming off his win in Bristol, Tenn. by powering to the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in a strong Funny Car field Friday night at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.

Capps was the last pair of Funny Cars to take to the track in the only qualifying session of the day due to lingering storms in the area and raced to a 3.898-second pass at 331.28 MPH to lead qualifying. The three-time and defending world champion is no stranger to success at the venue with one win in addition to his three consecutive No. 1 qualifying positions from the three most recent NHRA Norwalk outings.

“I was watching the scoreboards light up and the times got better and better,” said Capps following the run. “I saw Guido (crew chief Dean Antonelli) come back in the timing box a couple of times and I know what he is thinking and what he is doing. It started getting dark near the finish line and I saw the wall, but it was running too good to let up. It is cool to see all the fans who stuck it out and part of me wasn’t going to lift. I wanted to go low E.T. for Guido, the guys, and the fans.”

Capps On A Roll after Win at Bristol, Sets Sights on Norwalk Winners Circle

Norwalk, OH – Capps powered to his first win of the season at the Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, TN, the most recent event on tour. That victory moved him into the Funny Car points lead for the first time this year following his Bristol triumph.

Ron will participate in the Norwalk #2Fast2Tasty Challenge presented by Mission Foods on Saturday.  He earned the Funny Car pole position at the last three consecutive Norwalk outings (2019, 2021, 2022), and is seeking his fourth Norwalk No. 1 qualifier.   Note: the NHRA did not compete in Norwalk in 2020.

Capps became the first Funny Car pilot to drive the Toyota GR Supra Funny Car to the No. 1 qualifier position when he captured the pole at the 2022 event.

Capps talks Norwalk and the NHRA trail. “This is the part of the season where things heat up – both on the race track, and literally. Norwalk is one of the great venues on our circuit. You can’t say enough about the Bader family and what they do. It’s evident as soon as you walk in the gate and you see how many fans they have.

Ron Capps Becomes Winningest Driver at Bristol Dragway with Thunder Valley Nationals Victory

BRISTOL, TN – Three-time and reigning Funny Car world champion Ron Capps went into the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals tied with Tony Schumacher as the winningest driver at Bristol Dragway. On Sunday evening, he added another victory in his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra to break that tie and claim his first Wally of the 2023 season.

Capps, who was also the defending event champion, qualified No. 2 on the strength of his 3.962-second E.T. at 318.92 MPH recorded in Friday’s second qualifying session. On Sunday, he posted a 3.964-second effort to beat Dave Richards in the opening round of eliminations. The second-year team owner was then first off of the starting line again in the second round, winning with a 3.946 E.T. over a tire-smoking John Force. That win also came with a spot in the next Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge.

With crew chief Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli calling the shots, Capps stepped up to his quickest pass of the weekend, a 3.918 E.T., to win his semifinal match with Chad Green. In advancing to his fourth final round of the season, Capps also took over the Funny Car points lead.

Capps Eliminated Early at Postponed Epping Event, Will Continue Bristol Qualifying from No. 2 Position on Saturday

BRISTOL, TN – Three-time and reigning NHRA Funny Car world champion Ron Capps rolled into the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals with his sights set on collecting two Wally trophies at the historic facility where he owns a class-best six Bristol Dragway wins. After Mother Nature got the best of last weekend’s NHRA New England Nationals, canceling all four elimination rounds at the Epping, N.H. event, the competition picked back up during the second round of qualifying for the Thunder Valley Nationals. Capps and the NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra Funny Car team posted a 4.189 in Q1 after losing traction past halftrack to place them seventh heading into the Friday night session. The team pulled back up to the staging beams for Q2, ready to lay down a powerful pass under the Bristol Dragway lights. Capps posted a stout 3.962 E.T. to advance to the provisional No. 2 qualifying position, but despite clocking the second-quickest run of the day, Capps’ hopes of doubling up at Bristol were short-lived as he was defeated on a holeshot by his New England Nationals first-round opponent, Bob Tasca, who recorded a 3.972 for the win.

“Obviously, that Tasca team is a great team,” said Capps, the defending Thunder Valley Nationals event champion. “There’s a lot of talented people in that camp and that’s not a normal first-round match-up. That’s final-round stuff. The fans definitely won tonight. They got some great side-by-side drag racing here at Thunder Valley and it was great to see the track owners from New England Dragway come and hang out. I love Bristol and I hope to still have that Bristol love going into Sunday.

Capps Looking for Two Titles at Bristol

Bristol, TN – As a six-time Bristol Dragway winner, Capps leads the Funny Car category in number of Thunder Valley Nationals triumphs, and is tied with Tony Schumacher for winningest Camping World Series driver in the facility’s history.

Became the first Toyota Funny Car driver to race to victory while piloting a Toyota GR Supra when he clinched the 2022 Bristol win
Owns the Bristol Dragway Funny Car E.T. record, achieved during the 2016 race when he clocked a 3.884-second pass

Ron talks about ‘The Mountain’, “It’ll be weird not to race in Bristol on Father’s Day, but we’ve got some added excitement to the weekend due to the fact that we’ll be finishing the New England Nationals during qualifying. I couldn’t think of a better group of fans to do that in front of than our Bristol fans. We’ve had a lot of past success at Bristol, and have also had success at winning races that were postponed and completed at another event, so we’re hoping that will carry into this weekend. Unfortunate not to get the New England event finished, but happy we won’t have to wait long to complete the race.”
