Capps Looking for Two Titles at Bristol
Bristol, TN – As a six-time Bristol Dragway winner, Capps leads the Funny Car category in number of Thunder Valley Nationals triumphs,
and is tied with Tony Schumacher for winningest Camping World Series driver in the facility’s history.
Became the first Toyota Funny Car driver to race to victory while piloting a Toyota GR Supra when he clinched the 2022 Bristol win
Owns the Bristol Dragway Funny Car E.T. record, achieved during the 2016 race when he clocked a 3.884-second pass
Ron talks about ‘The Mountain’, “It’ll be weird not to race in Bristol on Father’s Day, but we’ve got some added excitement to the weekend due to the fact that we’ll be finishing the New England Nationals during qualifying. I couldn’t think of a better group of fans to do that in front of than our Bristol fans. We’ve had a lot of past success at Bristol, and have also had success at winning races that were postponed and completed at another event, so we’re hoping that will carry into this weekend. Unfortunate not to get the New England event finished, but happy we won’t have to wait long to complete the race.”
Capps and the NAPA Funny Car Looking for Victory in Epping
Epping, NH – Three-time and defending Funny Car world champ returns to Epping, N.H. after powering to a runner-up finish at the NHRA’s
most recent stop in Joliet, Ill.
For the second consecutive event, Capps will participate in the Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday afternoon; Capps earned his first Mission Foods specialty race win during the Joliet event.
Through the first six races of 2023, Capps has already earned a No. 1 qualifier award and has advanced to the final round three times
Capps is jazzed about Epping, he discussed it here, “Momentum is everything right now and as we’ve seen over the last couple of years with winning back-to-back championships, we had to have a car that was consistent, and ‘Guido’ (Dean Antonelli) and our NAPA team have continued to do that. Here we are again, same spot, and I’m very lucky that I get to drive this NAPA Supra. Although we didn’t finish the weekend in the winner’s circle in Chicago, I believe we certainly had the car to win the race. Unfortunately, we had a small miscue in the final round with the left parachute coming out of the pack but our team has addressed the issue. Sometimes, you’ve got to stand back and look at the bright side, and luckily, it happened early in the season and not when we’re running for a championship later in the year. One of the great things about our team is that we always learn from things like that, and it makes us stronger.
Ron Capps Jumps to Second in Funny Car Points Following Runner-Up at Route 66 Nationals
JOLIET, IL – Three-time and defending NHRA Funny Car world champion Ron Capps came up just one win light short of a third Route 66
Raceway victory, as he fell to Tim Wilkerson in the final round Sunday afternoon at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals. For his efforts, the driver of the NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota GR Supra moved up two spots in the championship point standings to sit second leaving Chicago.
Like most of the Funny Car entrants, Capps had to coast down the track in the opening round of qualifying after struggling to find traction on the Route 66 surface, which hasn’t seen NHRA national event competition since 2019. The next round of qualifying was also tricky, but Capps was able to record a 4.127-second E.T. to move up eight positions and win the first round of the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge over Bob Tasca III. In the final session – and the final round of the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge – Capps fired off a winning pass of 3.941 seconds at 328.30 MPH to win the $10,000 final round over Terry Haddock, who wasn’t able to make the run due to a mechanical issue. It was Capps’ first win in the new race-within-a-race series, and earned him three championship bonus points in the process.
Racing out of the No. 6 position on Sunday, Capps lined up with Haddock for a rematch of their Saturday race. This one went Capps’ way as well, with the NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota GR Supra running a 4.002-second E.T. to beat Haddock’s 4.07-second effort. In the second round, Capps and opponent Bob Tasca III had nearly identical reaction times but Capps powered ahead to finish first with a 3.983-second pass at 321.96 MPH, locking in his spot in the next Mission #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. A consistent 3.985 E.T. at 323.12 MPH was enough to knock Chad Green out in the semifinals, sending Capps to the final round.
Ron Capps Wins Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge at Route 66 NHRA Nationals
JOLIET, IL – Ron Capps closed out qualifying at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals by powering to victory in the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty
Funny Car challenge on Saturday evening. Capps clocked a winning run of 3.941 seconds at 328.30 MPH aboard the NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota GR Supra to defeat Terry Haddock, who suffered a mechanical malfunction on the starting line and was unable to make the run. By clinching his first #2Fast2Tasty win, the twice defending NHRA Camping World Series Funny Car world champion earned the $10,000 purse in addition to three bonus points which will be added to his tally when the points reset for the Countdown to the Championship playoffs in September.
“Since NHRA came around to talk to the owners and drivers last year about the possibility of running a program like this, I can tell you that everyone I’ve talked to was pumped because it took a Saturday of qualifying and made it insane,” said Capps. “When we saw the first #2Fast2Tasty Challenge race in Phoenix and we weren’t in it, we were bummed, so I’m so glad we got a chance to be a part of this specialty race this weekend. We’ve always concentrated on racing on Sunday, and this #2Fast2Tasty Challenge completely flipped everything upside down in a great way, so thank you, Mission Foods for doing this. Such a great program, and so excited we won it today.”
Capps and the NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra Funny Car headed to Route 66
Joliet, IL – By powering to a runner-up finish during the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, Calif. earlier this season, Capps secured a spot in
the Joliet Mission #2Fast2Tasty Funny Car Challenge, scheduled for Saturday.
Capps talks about Chicago, “Obviously, a lot of excitement around this race and it starts with the fact that we haven’t been there in a few years. A lot of great memories from that facility. I remember my first run down Route 66 Raceway in a Funny Car, and it seems like just yesterday. We’re really excited to get back out there and I know the fans are as well. The weekend is going to be full of a lot of cool stuff. For us, we have the Toyota Supra Showdown on Saturday and I’m going to be racing against one of the best leavers in Top Fuel in Justin Ashley.
Obviously, we want to get another Supra Showdown win for our Funny Car team, and we’ll see if we can’t pull that off on Saturday. On top of that, the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge gives us a chance for some bonus money, and more importantly, points, which we can pocket for the Countdown later in the year. So, thank you again, Mission Foods, for putting that up. We’re very pumped and excited to be involved in it this weekend and hopefully, we’ll start Sunday having already raced to the win on Saturday in the #2Fast2Tasty Challenge. Overall, just looking forward to a great weekend back in the Chicago area.”
Ron Capps Takes NAPA Funny Car to Final Quad at Charlotte Four-Wide Nationals
CONCORD, NC – Ron Capps rolled into zMAX Dragway for the Circle K NHRA Four-Wide Nationals as the most recent Funny Car winner at
the Charlotte-area facility after winning the 2022 Carolina Nationals. The three-time and reigning world champion was seeking a second consecutive win at zMAX and his second Four-Wide Nationals win, but the driver of the NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra came up just one win light short in the final round Sunday evening.
Capps struggled to get down the track in qualifying on Friday, but crew chief Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli had things turned around for the third session on Saturday. Capps recorded a 3.899 E.T. at 330.07 MPH to move up to seventh before settling into the No. 9 spot once qualifying was complete.
“We didn’t qualify where people are used to seeing the NAPA car qualified,” Capps said. “The driver didn’t keep it in the groove that first run, and then we struggled a bit experimenting with some things during those other sessions, and we ended up in ninth, which is unusual for us, but that’s part of what makes this so fun as a team owner. My team is so good at adapting, and it shows what kind of character they have because not everything always goes peachy. Last year it sure seemed like it did, and I was blessed to have the car, but this weekend was a great example of adversity getting thrown at all of us and overcoming it.”
Capps Ready for to Regain Momentum in Charlotte
Concord, NC – The last time Capps competed at zMAX Dragway (2022 NHRA Carolina Nationals), he powered to victory which helped propel
him to the 2022 Funny Car series title. Ron reset the zMAX Dragway Funny Car speed record when he drove his NAPA Supra to a 335.07 mph pass during the Fall 2022 event.
Charlottes special to Capps, it’s where he announced a partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing North America ahead of the 2022 Charlotte Four-Wide Nationals race weekend; the 2023 event marks the one-year anniversary of Capps’ partnership with Toyota.
Capps on zMax, “This is always a fun part of the season for me with the back-to-back four-wide events. This early in the year, you’re not necessarily watching the points per se, and these two four-wide races are kind of one-off events that you have to approach differently. I’ve always thought of them as sort of an all-star race because if you can succeed and win a four-wide, you’ve really achieved something.
Ron Capps’ Vegas Four-Wide Nationals Title Defense Ends in Round One
LAS VEGAS – As the defending event champion and defending NHRA Funny Car world champion, Ron Capps was looking forward to a long
race day on Sunday at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. A top 5 qualifying effort was a good start for Capps in his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra, but a loss of traction in the opening round of eliminations dashed Capps’ hopes for a second consecutive Four-Wide Nationals win.
Capps, crew chief Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli, and the Ron Capps Motorsports team started qualifying with a strong baseline run on Friday. After two more passes, Capps stepped up to a 3.937 E.T. at 324.05 MPH in Saturday’s final session to qualify in the No. 4 spot. The run was the quickest pass of the session, earning Capps three bonus points.
Capps went into Sunday matched up with No. 5 qualifier Bob Tasca III, No. 12 qualifier Blake Alexander, and No. 13 qualifier Chad Green in the final Funny Car quad. The NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra left the starting line and lost traction, and though Capps tried to recover, he was beat to the finish by Green and Alexander.
Capps Looking for Victory #2 at this Years Vegas Four Wide
Las Vegas, NV – Capps earned victory No. 1 for Ron Capps Motorsports during the 2022 Las Vegas event. He’s a two-time winner while
competing in the unique four-wide style of racing. In addition to his 2022 Las Vegas Four-Wide Nationals win, Capps also won the 2017 Charlotte event
He advanced to the final round at the two most recent events on tour (Phoenix and Pomona 1) and is currently ranked No. 2 in points.
Ron talks Vegas, “Rolling into Vegas for this year’s Four-Wide Nationals has all of us at Ron Capps Motorsports smiling. For one, we’ll be going back as the defending champions of the race. Last year’s event was very, very special for our team. 2022 had a lot of great moments; a lot of ‘firsts,’ and things that we can look back on that we’re very proud of, but the 2022 Las Vegas Four-Wide Nationals was where our RCM team got its very first win.
NHRA VETERAN RON CAPPS TO RACE IN SRX AT ELDORA
NHRA Legend, Ron Capps will join star-studded field on dirt at Eldora Speedway
NEW YORK, NY – Superstar Racing Experience (SRX) has announced that Ron Capps will join the SRX field at Tony Stewart’s Eldora
Speedway on August 10th, 2023. Capps, a highly decorated NHRA driver, comes to SRX representing a new discipline of racing as the first full-time drag racer to compete in SRX.
“SRX pretty much took the Motorsports world by storm three years ago. We all grew up watching the IROC series and Thursday Night Thunder was something I never missed as a fan. To have these two things together is a dream for both the fans and racecar drivers,” said Ron Capps. “It is such an honor to be selected to join the SRX series this year. I’ve been a huge fan of the concept to the point where we would make sure we got to a TV when we were at our NHRA races to catch the SRX races.”
“It’s incredible to know that I’ll be joining some of the best racecar drivers in the world on such a historic and fast racetrack in Eldora Speedway. The coolest part is for our NHRA fans to know that they can tune in and watch one of their own battle with the best on the high banks of Eldora Speedway. I’ll be a little out of my comfort zone, but I’m going to try and make our fans proud,” said Capps.
