Ron Capps Drives NAPA Supra to Semifinal Finish at Epping

EPPING, NH – Ron Capps took delivery of his brand-new NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota GR Supra when he joined the Toyota Racing family during the NHRA Charlotte event in April and has been on a mission to become the first among the three Toyota Funny Car drivers to nab the first Supra victory ever since.

The NHRA Epping race weekend got off to an unusual start for Capps and his Ron Capps Motorsports team which is accustomed to laying down top-seeded qualifying runs right off the bat. The NAPA team uncharacteristically struggled to get down the track during the first two qualifying sessions, but by Q3, they had their combination figured out and unleashed a solid 3.929 E.T. to place them in the top half of the field.

Starting from the No. 7 seed, Capps drew Jim Campbell as his first-round competitor and powered to a 3.974 E.T. to advance to round two where he took the NAPA Supra on a winning 3.946-second ride to outpace John Force. The semifinals pitted Capps against another heavy-hitter, with the defending series champion lining up opposite Robert Hight. Against Hight, Capps was first on the throttle but his machine started dropping cylinders and slowed to a 4.092 E.T. while Hight made a clean pass for the win, forcing Capps to have to wait until the Bristol, Tenn. event to have another crack at becoming the first Toyota driver to bring home a win aboard a GR Supra.

Ron Capps Advances to Richmond Quarterfinals

NORTH DINWIDDIE, VA – As the 2019 Virginia NHRA Nationals event champion, Ron Capps and his NAPA AUTO PARTS team were ready to defend their title and add another Wally to the Ron Capps Motorsports trophy case. Although it had been three years since the NHRA Camping World Series last visited Virginia Motorsports Park, the Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli and John Medlen-guided team came out swinging during qualifying. They recorded a 3.864 E.T. at 332.75 mph on Saturday afternoon to reset the track E.T. record and earn three bonus points for clocking the quickest run of the session. Capps was looking to maintain his position at the top of the timing sheets during Q3 but was bumped back a spot by his former teammate, Matt Hagan, who snagged the pole and track record in the process.

Starting from the No. 2 seed, Capps drew No. 15 qualifier Mike McIntire in round one of eliminations. McIntire hazed the tires as soon as he stood on the throttle while Capps encountered troubles almost immediately after. Both drivers attempted to pedal their cars, and while it was a futile effort on McIntire’s part, Capps was able to get his Toyota GR Supra to regain traction and hung on for the round win. In the quarterfinals, No. 3 ranked Capps faced No. 2 ranked Robert Hight. Without the advantage of lane choice, Capps found himself in the unfavorable right lane and suffered the same fate as many of his competitors, losing traction as soon as he attempted to leave the starting line. In the opposite lane, Hight was able to make a clean pass for the round win.

Capps, Schumacher Help Raise Funds for A Soldier’s Child Charity

MURFREESBORO, TN – NHRA fan-favorites Ron Capps and Tony Schumacher attended the 13th annual A Soldier’s Child Dinner Banquet in Murfreesboro, Tenn. on Friday evening, helping to raise dollars and awareness for the nonprofit that has been near and dear to the hearts of Don Schumacher Racing partners, Joe and Cathi Maynard, since 2008. The event, made possible thanks to presenting sponsor and Maynard family business, ECHO Power Engineering, is the largest fundraiser for A Soldier’s Child, a national organization that aims to serve the children of fallen military personnel who lost their lives while on active duty.

During the evening’s festivities, Capps and Schumacher were introduced on stage in front of the more than 450 guests in attendance. The multi-time NHRA world champions each donated NHRA trackside experiential packages to the event’s silent auction, helping to contribute to the more than $230,000 raised for A Soldier’s Child on Friday night. Their presence also helped to bring awareness to the ‘Last Full Measure of Devotion Society’ endowment program.

“We had a goal of $200,000, and thanks to Tony Schumacher and Ron Capps, whose items brought in $15,000, and all of the wonderful, generous folks in attendance last night, we exceeded our goal by more than $30,000,” said Joe Maynard, an avid drag racing fan and fixture among the DSR and Ron Capps Motorsports pits. “Cathi and I are passionate about veterans, children, and the homeless, in no particular order, and A Soldier’s Child helps both veterans and kids, so this is a very important cause for us.

Capps Makes GR Supra Debut, Advances to Final Elimination Quad in Charlotte

CONCORD, NC – In his debut race behind the wheel of a Toyota GR Supra Funny Car, defending series champion Ron Capps successfully advanced to the final elimination quad during the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway on Sunday afternoon.

Right out of the gate, Capps opened the weekend by posting the third-quickest run of the first qualifying session when he took the NAPA AUTO PARTS Toyota Supra on its maiden voyage. He then followed his impressive inaugural pass with a ‘top three’ E.T. in Q2 before rocketing to low E.T. of the round in Q3. For their efforts, the NAPA team earned five qualifying bonus points overall and the No. 3 seed to start race day. During the first round of eliminations, Capps used the best reaction time of his quad coupled with a 3.923 E.T. to advance to round two where he clocked a 3.954 E.T. to defeat Mike McIntire, Matt Hagan, and J.R. Todd and earn a bid to the finals. The new team owner won the most recent NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas a few weeks prior and was looking for a repeat performance on Sunday, but a loss of traction near halftrack caused Capps to slow and allowed opponents John Force and Robert Hight to cross the finish line beams first. The 69-time race winner’s Concord, N.C. outing was recorded as a semifinal finish, and he departs zMAX ranked third in the Funny Car point standings.

Toyota Partners with Ron Capps Beginning with Charlotte 4-Wide Nationals

CONCORD, NC – Toyota announced today that Ron Capps and his newly formed race team of Ron Capps Motorsports will begin fielding the Toyota GR Supra Funny Car at this weekend’s 4-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway in Concord, N.C. The addition of Ron Capps Motorsports will expand the footprint of Toyota Gazoo Racing North America (TGRNA) to three GR Supra Funny Cars competing for the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series championship.

“Ron Capps is a proven champion in NHRA competition and all around one of the truly entertaining and engaging personalities in the pit area,” said Paul Doleshal, Group Manager, Motorsports, Toyota Motor North America (TMNA). “The drivers that pilot not only our GR Supra Funny Cars, but all of our TGRNA vehicles in NHRA competition are not only talented behind the wheel, but also as ambassadors for our brand on and off the race track. And we couldn’t be happier to welcome Ron and his team to the family.”

Capps has been a dominant driver in Funny Car competition every time he rolls to the starting line, as the California-native owns the second-most wins in NHRA Funny Car history. The two-time (2016 and 2021) and defending Funny Car World Champion has amassed 68 event titles (67 in Funny Car, 1 in Top Fuel) to date in his career and has made 131 final round appearances (129 in Funny Car, 2 in Top Fuel).

Capps Continues to Impress in Houston

BAYTOWN, TX – Ron Capps entered Houston Raceway Park armed with momentum following his win at Las Vegas and wasted no time reminding the competition why he’s got the big No. 1 sticker on his NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car during the final running of the NHRA SpringNationals.

Capps rocketed to the provisional No. 1 qualifying spot on Friday night only to come back on Saturday and lay down the quickest pass of Q2 during a hot and challenging session where all but one other Funny Car failed to make a full pass. In the final session, Capps clocked another three-second run, making him the only Funny Car pilot to successfully get down the track in all three qualifying sessions. Starting from the pole position for the second event in a row and third time in 2022, Capps was rewarded with a Bye run in the first round of eliminations, but it also meant Capps was guaranteed a tough second-round race, knowing he’d have to face the winner of the Matt Hagan/John Force E1 duel. The Hagan/Force race went in Hagan’s favor and when Capps lined up opposite his former teammate, his efforts to snag a second Wally trophy in his first year as an NHRA team owner were quickly dashed when his machine went up in smoke right at the hit of the throttle.

“This was the weekend everyone’s been thinking about, knowing this was the last time we were going to race here,” said Capps, a four-time Houston champion. “I couldn’t be more proud of our NAPA AutoCare team. Obviously, we came here off of that big win in Vegas, and now that we’re running a lot of these races with three qualifying runs, it’s imperative to not only use that Friday night run for seeding where you’re going to be on the ladder, but you also want to go into Saturday with confidence knowing that you’re safely in the show.

Capps Claims Second Consecutive No. 1 Qualifier Award, Third in Five Races

BAYTOWN, TX – Fresh off of a win from the recent Las Vegas race, the Ron Capps Motorsports team continued to dominate at the NHRA SpringNationals, claiming the No. 1 qualifying spot for the second event in a row, and the third time in Ron Capps’ first five events as an NHRA team owner.

After laying down the quickest pass of the open qualifying session, Capps and the NAPA AUTO PARTS team rolled into Houston Raceway Park on Saturday ready to continue their stranglehold on the competitive Funny Car category. While nearly every nitro-burning car struggled to even make it down the tricky Baytown track in the heat of the day, the challenging conditions were no match for NAPA crew chiefs Dean ‘Guido’ Antonelli and John Medlen, who tuned Capps to a stout 3.931 E.T. at 321.96 mph in Q2. With six ‘low E.T.’ bonus points under their belt, the NAPA team closed out qualifying with another impressive blast, clocking a 3.879 E.T. to collect two more bonus points.

“That Q2 run in the heat was a big deal and only one other car made it down in Funny Car besides us,” said the 69-time Funny Car winner. “To run a 93 in the heat, in the right lane that has some bumps in it, it surely changes things. Tomorrow will be hotter and those bumps tend to rear their ugly heads even more in the heat, so it gives me confidence knowing we can get down it no problem. I have so much confidence in my team knowing the car we have, and things are just clicking.”
