ROCHESTER, NY – Placing third with 1155 points in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts is the Top Dragster team of Morgan Forrest Racing, and driver Buddy Forrest said he was pleased with the team’s showing in the  Championship Point Award Series Standings of 2010.

“We had a good year,” said the Rochester, New York racer, who is teamed with Doug Morgan, co-owner and crew chief of the team. “We started slow, but after the second race we rebuilt the motor in the car, and I tried to do a good job on the tree, and it paid off.”

The team qualified for all Quick 32 Sportsman Series events, and recorded two semi-final round finishes, a first-round finish, a runner-up finish, and topped off their season with a victory during the Canadian Nitro Nationals at Toronto Motorsports Park in July.

Powered by a 638-cubic inch Chevrolet engine, Forrest said he never had to use the available nitrous assist on the car in 2010, but added that he believes the power-boosting system may be necessary in 2011 with increased competition.

Behind the big Chevy in the 2000 Spitzer dragster is a Powerglide transmission, and Forrest said there will be no big changes to the car for next season.

BELLE RIVER, ONTARIO – While his year did not start off on a positive note, Dan Aitken Jr, who placed fourth in the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, did have a stellar end to his year, winning back-to-back events in the popular drag racing series.

“We were pleasantly surprised with our last two events as nothing went our way for the first four races,” noted Aitken, who scored 1154 points in the six-race Championship Point Award Series. “Things were going our way.”

Aitken said that consistency played an important part of the team’s season, adding there were no mechanical or electrical gremlins for the year, just some driver adjustments which paid off later in the year.

Aitken qualified for all races, and was a second-round finalist in two events, and a first-round finalist in another two events before going the distance to win not only the Top Sportsman class but the overall event title as well in the last two races.

Melanie Simmons Impressive in Transitional Year

ORILLIA, ONTARIO – Melanie Simmons and her Toyrific Racing Top Dragster had an impressive season in 2010, especially considering the major learning curve thrown her way during the Quick 32 Sportsman Series racing season.

Simmons, from Orillia, Ontario made the move to a supercharged engine in 2010 to afford her a better opportunity to qualify in the top half of the field for the increasingly competitive Quick 32 Sportsman Series events. After several DNQ’s (did not qualify) in the 2009 season, the Toyrific team benefited from the assistance of Carl Spiering and ERD (Engine Research & Development) to build a supercharged 540 cubic-inch Big Block Chevy to motivate the popular female driver. It was an instant gratification for Simmons dipping into the 6.80-second range at 196 mph on her first full pull.

“It was awesome to make the switch from our injected engine to the supercharged engine in 2010. There is nothing like belt-driven power. We cut a full second in ET and added around 30 mph,” Simmons noted.

PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series Prepared for Quick Response

CAYUGA, ONTARIO – Drag racing offers some of the most exciting and colorful racing in all of motorsport, but safety is an important element and cannot be overlooked.

When the Pro Modified Racing Association and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts stage an event, the fire and rescue safety crew is front and center throughout the racing in case of an emergency.

“Our squad works closely with the teams and supplement the venue’s emergency and safety crew where we participate to ensure that a proper safety and emergency plan is in place to the benefit of our teams and their families, the track, the series, the sponsors and our fans”, explained Bruce Mehlenbacher, Director of Operations. “The safety of our fans, drivers and crew members is a critical priority to the PMRA and Quick 32 Sportsman Series”.

“The Pro Modified class is one of drag racing’s most exciting and volatile classes and safety is a key element to our sport,” said Jim Salemi of G-Force Race Cars. “The cars are constructed under strict technical and safety regulations provided by our sanctioning organizations. But to be a leader in our sport you need to run on the edge to be competitive and that can be dangerous.

“These cars make hundreds of runs down the race track,” Salemi continued. “It only takes one time for something to go wrong and you can be in trouble fast.”
