Rain delays eliminations in round five of Quick 32 Sportsman Series action

GRAND BEND, ONTARIO – Rain postponed the final rounds of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts event during the Stratford Spectacular Hot Summer Nationals held at the Grand Bend Motorplex.

Elimination rounds, the final class winner, the event champion and the series champion will be determined at the next Quick 32 Sportsman Series event, to be held at Grand Bend over the Labor Day weekend.

There were 24 Top Dragsters vying for the 16 elimination positions, and 23 Top Sportsman cars showed up to do battle for the other 16 top positions.

The four finalists who will contest the Top Dragster side of the postponed race at the upcoming Labor Day race are Melanie Simmons of Orillia, Ontario, who eliminated number one qualifier Michael Hinbest of Orangeville, Ontario, Johnny Hipwell of Fonthill, Ontario, who eliminated Tony Positano of Toronto, Ontario, who qualified 15th, Buddy Forrest of Rochester, NY, who defeated number two qualifier Jim McCann of Stratford, Ontario, and John Flanigan of East Aurora, NY, who defeated Scott Wildgust of Wartburg, Ontario, who qualified in fourth.

Eliminated in the first round of Top Dragster racing were number nine qualifier Jamie Bridge of Napanee, Ontario, falling victim to Hinbest. Simmons eliminated number 13 qualifier Larry Kilpatrick of London, Ontario, Bill Moloughney of Shawville, Quebec, who qualified 11th, lost to Hipwell, and Positano eliminated Jamie Tupper of Tillsonburg, Ontario, who was first alternate when Jim Rubino of Buffalo, NY, could not make the show.

Peter Hyde of Stratford, who qualified 10th, lost to McCann, and Forrest took out number six starter James Lichty of Linwood, Ontario. Number 12 qualifier Sam Christian of Buffalo, NY, was taken out by Wildgust, and number 16 qualifier Tim Heslop of London, Ontario, lost to Flanigan.

Only the opening round of the Top Sportsman class was held before the rain.

On the Top Sportsman ladder, Darrin Grubb of Pine River, Ontario, who qualified ninth, was a first round victim to Kevin Wicke of Stratford, Ontario, and Steve Corriveau of Fonthill, Ontario won over number five qualifier Paul Martin of Breslau, Ontario. Bill Wilson of Ingersoll, Ontario took out number three starter Fred DeJong of Puslinch, Ontario, and Darryl McMillan of Goderich, Ontario won over number 15 qualifier Ben Grevers of Paris, Ontario.

Mike Digby of Stirling, Ontario started 10th but was taken out in the first round by Bill Dineen, of Goderich, Ontario as was number 14 starter Don Nelson of Villa Nova, Ontario who was taken out by Steve Parkhurst of Belleville, Ontario. Number four qualifier Spencer Hyde of Stratford, Ontario, lost to Dan Aitken of Belle River, Ontario, Tom Stuart of Blenheim, Ontario, who started in 16th spot, lost to Tom Orr of Shawville, Quebec.

The sixth and final event in the 2010 Quick 32 Sportsman Series will be held September 3-5 during the Teamsters “Thunder by the Beach” at the Grand Bend Motorplex.
