Morgan can’t parlay starting-line advantage to round-win in Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ Lucas Oil/MAVTV Ford driver Larry Morgan was so far ahead of Vincent Nobile at the start of their first-round Larry Morgan-Phoenixmatchup at the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals on Sunday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park that even Nobile thought the race was over.

But despite a .031-second advantage on the Christmas Tree, Morgan was unable to hold off the charging Nobile.

“I was a good ways ahead of him,” Morgan said. “He thought I’d beaten him. I said, ‘No, you went around me.’ He probably got by me around 1,000 feet or so. The finish line couldn’t get there soon enough for us.”

Improvement has Lucas Oil’s Morgan excited for race day

PHOENIX, AZ – Larry Morgan and the Lucas Oil/MAVTV Ford Mustang team made steady improvement during the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals this weekend at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, and the veteran driver carries a lot of confidence heading into Sunday’s eliminations.

“We did well,” Morgan said. “We were ninth-quickest in the first session today, and we knew there was a lot we could improve on. I’m just happy to get this Lucas Oil/Streamlight Ford in the program.

Morgan has high hopes for his Lucas Oil/MAVTV Mustang team

PHOENIX, AZ – Lucas Oil/MAVTV Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan is an eternal optimist, truly believing that tomorrow will be Larry Morganbetter than today, and because of that attitude he is ready for the Carquest Auto Parts NHRA Nationals this weekend at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.

“We want to win as many rounds as we can and try to win the championship,” Morgan said. “That’s our goal. If that’s not the goal every week, why even come?”

The veteran from Newark, Ohio, has reason for optimism after taking out 2012 Pro Stock champion Allen Johnson in the first round in Pomona, Calif., to start the season. His small, family-owned team may not be as big as some of the top Pro Stock organizations, but working as a unit can be a plus.

Luck turns for Lucas Oil pro Larry Morgan in Pomona

POMONA, CA – After a weekend that wasn’t going the way Lucas Oil/MAVTV driver Larry Morgan wanted, the overcast skies LucasOilSunday at Auto Club Raceway really turned his luck around.

After qualifying No. 15 for the Circle K Winternationals, Morgan’s Ford Mustang faced off against No. 2 qualifier Allen Johnson’s Dodge Avenger in the first round. But with a reaction time of .010 seconds, Morgan’s 6.568-second pass at 209.65 mph was good enough to hold off Johnson’s 6.567-second pass at 211.36 mph for a first-round, holeshot victory.

“Anytime you can beat the guys that continually do well feels good,” Morgan said. “Allen Johnson is a tough guy and he’s a tough competitor. That team has their act together. When you beat someone like that it really puts a shot in your team’s arm, that’s for sure.”

“We didn’t make a solid qualifying run either day,” Morgan said. “We battled clutch issues with every pass we made. Now that we know what is wrong, we need to go back through every inch of the car with a fine-tooth comb and make changes to get ready for tomorrow’s run.”

Joliet, Ill. (June 13) – Taking full advantage of the momentum created by his season-opening win last month in Indianapolis, Mike Coughlin struck again as he drove his JEGS.com Cobalt to the Top Sportsman title in the final round of the North Central Division Lucas Oil Series event at Route 66 Raceway.

Coughlin extended his winning streak behind the wheel of his 200-mph Chevy to ten-straight rounds to collect the tenth Lucas Oil Series title of his career. Coughlin drove to a 6.761 elapsed time on his 6.76 dial-in after opponent Kevin Waller encountered a mechanical problem and was late off the starting line. Ironically, Coughlin would have lost the round on a breakout had he run quicker by just two-thousandths of a second, but he managed to lift off the throttle at precisely the right moment.
