Las Vegas victory high on Lucas Oil driver Richie Crampton’s wish list

LAS VEGAS, NV – Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton has had a stellar start to the 2015 NHRA Richie Crampton - CharlotteMello Yello Drag Racing Series season, and he would love to punctuate it with a victory at this weekend’s SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but he knows that’s a difficult chore for any Top Fuel driver these days.

“It’s extremely hard to win rounds, let alone win races, in the NHRA Mello Yello series,” Crampton said. “The parity in Top Fuel is better than it’s ever been, and the racing is so tight that every single person on the team has to be on point. And you need some luck on race day as well. The competition is fantastic this year.”

Final-round effort in Charlotte has Richie Crampton optimistic about future

CHARLOTTE, NC – Lucas Oil Top Fuel driver Richie Crampton battled his way to a final-round appearance on Richie Crampton - Charlotte final roundSunday during his second career start at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte.

Matched up against Pat Dakin, Chris Karamesines, and Brittany Force in the first quad of eliminations, Crampton pedaled his way on to the next round. He then recorded a 3.741 in the semifinal round against Force, Tony Schumacher, and Clay Millican to move on to the final.

Though he kept pace with Antron Brown, Steve Torrence, and Millican in the final round, Crampton came up just short when he had to pedal his Lucas Oil dragster before crossing the finish line.

Lucas Oil pro Richie Crampton earns lofty perch during Charlotte qualifying

CHARLOTTE, NC – The city of Charlotte is used to good ol’ Southern boys showing off their racing prowess at local Richie Crampton - Charlotte tracks, so it should be no surprise that Lucas Oil Top Fuel pilot Richie Crampton excelled in Saturday’s qualifying action at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals. The only difference is that Crampton hails from South Adelaide, Australia, which is a tad bit further south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

“I’ll take Southern hospitality any way I can get it,” said Crampton, the 2014 Rookie of the Year. “The folks here couldn’t be nicer, and although it’s a little different than Australia, race fans are race fans and we all share a love of motorsports. I’m perfectly happy and comfortable here, especially now that I’ve raced this track a few times before. I’m not a wide-eyed rookie anymore.”

Crampton shows veteran poise during Gainesville race day

GAINESVILLE, FL – Lucas Oil/GEICO Top Fuel driver Richie Crampton put in another solid performance during the Richie Crampton - GatorsNationalsNHRA Gatornationals to remain a career-best sixth in the points standings.

Starting the day off paired up against No. 9 qualifier Steve Torrence in the first round of eliminations, Crampton made his best run of the weekend to advance with a 3.783-second pass at 320.05 mph, compared to Torrence’s 3.859-second pass at 321.81 mph.

“It was great to get another first-round win this year,” Crampton said. “Obviously, first-round wins can really help you out in the points standings. It also helped build some good momentum for us going into the second round.”

Crampton looking for revenge in Gainesville eliminations

GAINESVILLE, FL – Battling the infamous Florida weather and historic track surface at Auto-Plus Raceway, Lucas Richie Crampton - GatorsOil/GEICO Top Fuel driver Richie Crampton is prepared to leave it all on the line during the second eliminations appearance of his career at the NHRA Gatornationals.

Crampton has made small gains throughout the weekend in Gainesville that so far have culminated in a best pass of 3.829 seconds at 319.14 mph in the final qualifying session Saturday afternoon for the No. 8 spot. He will have a close head-to-head battle with No. 9 Steve Torrence in the first round of final eliminations on Sunday.

“The last session of qualifying went pretty well for us,” Crampton said. “We had been running pretty well up until then, but that last pass definitely felt the best.

Crampton gains valuable ground before heading south to Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, FL – Currently sitting sixth in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series points standings, tying a Richie Cramptonprevious career-high, GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel driver Richie Crampton is determined to continue his championship charge at the NHRA Gatornationals this weekend at Auto-Plus Raceway.

Crampton has qualified second and third in the two races this season, winning a round at both races in Pomona and Phoenix, but he’d like to improve on that in Gainesville.

“It’s going to be business as usual when we get to Gainesville,” Crampton said. “It’s going to be all about trying to go as many rounds as we can on Sunday. If we can do that, I’m sure we’ll be where we need to be at the end of the day.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN – As a part of a illustrious group of motorsports rookies in the running for RACER Magazine’s Richie Crampton - 2014 Rookie of the Year2014 Rookie of the Year award, GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel dragster driver Richie Crampton pulled out one last victory to add to his list of first-year accomplishments.

“I’m over the moon to receive the RACER Magazine Rookie of the Year award for 2014,” Crampton said. “If you look at all the other rookies that were on that list over all forms of motorsports, I’m blown away that I won the award.

“This really just puts another cherry on top of what was an amazing year for me. I’m excited that the fans agree.”

Resilient Top Fuel sophomore Crampton battles in the Valley of the Sun

PHOENIX, AZ – Making another strong statement in only his second year on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Richie Crampton - PhoenixSeries circuit, GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel driver Richie Crampton drove to a hard-fought quarterfinal appearance at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals.

Crampton qualified No. 3 and was paired up against No. 14 Troy Buff in the first round of eliminations Sunday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. Both drivers left the line within .008-second of each other and immediately smoked the tires. However, using knowledge he gained in his rookie season, Crampton was able to pedal his way to a round-one victory.

“We qualified strong and we were pretty confident heading into the first round,” Crampton said. “I think we underestimated how good the racetrack was this morning for round one though. It went out and shook the tires right away, but I was able to pedal and get around Troy Buff.

Crampton finds his stride during Phoenix qualifying 

PHOENIX, AZ – Another successful weekend of qualifying for GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel driver Richie Crampton Richie Crampton - Phoenixhas him ready to capture his third career win at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.

Building off each previous session’s results, Crampton laid down his best pass of the weekend during Q4, a 3.739 at 324.51 mph. Snagging the No. 3 spot on the leaderboard, Crampton will look to capture a first-round win over No. 14 Troy Buff on Sunday to keep his weekend headed in the right direction.

“We had some unusual things happen Friday that we had to really overcome today,” Crampton said. “But we definitely made up for it today in both sessions and it turned out pretty well qualifying No. 3.

Cruising to the desert, Crampton plans to conquer Phoenix

PHOENIX, AZ – With an emphasis on getting his 2015 campaign off to a fast start, GEICO/Lucas Oil Top Fuel driver Richie CramptonRichie Crampton is determined to find success at this weekend’s CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.

“We are looking pretty good for Phoenix,” said Crampton, the reigning Rookie of the Year. “We tested in Vegas just before the season opener and of course we ran really well in Pomona (Calif.). We should be right up in the top half of the field again in Phoenix.”

Looking to improve off of last year’s finish at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, Crampton wants to add another NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series win to his developing collection.
