Schumacher Overcomes Qualifying Woes To Reach Mile-High Semifinals, Brown out in Round 1

Morrison, CO – As is typically the case whenever they pay their annual visit to the foot of the Rocky Mountains for the NHRA Mile-High Schumacher - Denver - Competition Plus Nationals, this year’s 34th edition of the popular Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event was an exercise in perseverance for the U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster duo of Tony “The Sarge” Schumacher and Antron Brown.

The rarified air at 5,800 feet above sea level posed the usual setup challenges on the Bandimere Speedway dragstrip just west of Denver this weekend, but it was evident that each member of the U.S. Army Racing team plays a vital role in the success of the car on the track, similar to how every Soldier, no matter which of the more than 150 career options he or she chooses in the Army, is vital to the success of the mission.

Morrison, CO  Colorado’s Mount Elbert is the tallest in the state at more than 14,000 feet but the mile-high Thunder Mountain at Massey - Competition Plus - Richard MuirBandimere Speedway near Denver was the toughest on Sunday.

Capps qualifies in the middle of the pack at #8 and leads off the DSR Saturday report

Capps has attitude to deal with Bandimere altitude, hopes plan works when he faces teammate, points leader Hagan

Morrison, CO Ron Capps has been to drag racing’s mountaintop every year since 1997 and his experience has led to a disciplined Ron Capps - Competition Plus - Richard Muirroutine when he heads to Bandimere Speedway outside of Denver for the Mopar Mile-High Nationals.

The driver of Don Schumacher Racing’s NAPA AUTO PARTS Funny Car won at Bandimere in 2009 when he also won the pole. He has been runner-up twice.

Racing in mile-high altitude like at Bandimere chokes the power of the supercharged, nitro-fueled engines and can have a similar effect on people more accustomed to sea-level.

Schumacher and Brown Struggle on the ‘Mountain’, Qualify 10th and 12th

Morrison, CO – It took a clutch performance in the fourth and final qualifying session of the weekend Saturday for Tony Schumacher Antron Brown - Competition Plus - Richard Muirand the U.S. Army Top Fuel Dragster for Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) to safely make it to Sunday’s elimination rounds of the 34th annual Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway just west of Denver.

Schumacher and the U.S. Army team struggled through both qualifying sessions Friday and, after today’s penultimate qualifying run, the seven-time Top Fuel world champion found himself outside the top-16 with one chance remaining on one of the trickiest racetracks on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule thanks, in large part, to the fact it sits more than a mile above sea level at the base of the Rocky Mountains.
