Jack Beckman leads off the the pre-race report for DSR
Madison, IL – There is no better time than this weekend for history to repeat itself for Jack Beckman and the Valvoline MaxLife/MTS
Funny Car team.
The Don Schumacher Racing team is headed to St. Louis for the AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park where its march to the 2012 NHRA Funny Car world championship picked up a torrid pace.
A year ago at Gateway, Beckman with crew chief Todd Smith and assistant Terry Snyder earned the No. 1 qualifying spot and went on to win the event title. A week later, they went to Maple Grove Raceway at Reading, Pa., and earned a 20-point bonus for setting the NHRA elapsed time record en route to winning another pole and event title.
Tough Weekend for Team DSR at the AAA FallNationals
ENNIS, TX – Ron Capps has made comebacks before in his drag racing career and after being upset Sunday in the first round near Dallas he is facing one of his most challenging climbs.
A loss in the opening round of the AAA Texas Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, dropped Capps and his NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge Charger R/T team from second to sixth in the NHRA Countdown for the Championship playoff after two of six events.
After crew chief Rahn Tobler and assistant John Collins produced qualifying times of 4.096 seconds (306.88 mph) and 4.102 (305.22) on Saturday, Capps said they weren’t trying to doing anything radically different.
DSR shutout for third straight NHRA Mello Yello Series event
ENNIS, TX – Don Schumacher Racing picked the wrong time to go into a slump, and it continued Sunday in the AAA Texas Fall
Nationals at the Texas Motorplex near Dallas.
Losing its winning edge two events into the six-race NHRA Countdown to the Championship was not the best timing.
The seven-team organization, which won 20 Mello Yello Series titles through the first 17 events, has now gone three straight without reaching a winner’s circle marking only the sixth time in 20 races this year that DSR did not leave with an event title in either Top Fuel or Funny Car.
All DSR Teams in at AAA Fall Nationals, Final Team Reports from Texas Qualifying
Massey qualifies No. 6 for hometown race at Texas Motorplex, Battery Extender dragster looks to extend points lead in Countdown
– In front of family and friends, Forth Worth native Spencer Massey qualified No. 6 for Sunday’s AAA Texas Fall Nationals at Massey’s home track, the Texas Motorplex.
Friday’s two qualifying sessions were washed out by persistent heavy rains leaving NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series competitors with only two chances at the Texas track.
“It’s always tough when you only have two qualifying sessions,” Massey said. “It’s important that you go out on your first lap and get down the track. You have to be a little bit more conservative to make sure you get a good number on the board and we did that.”
U.S. Army Top Fuel Duo Looks To Rebound at AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals
ENNIS, TX – Golf has its mulligan, when a less-than-desired shot allows the player a literal “do-over” – no questions asked. The
practice was originally dubbed “correction shot” by one David Mulligan, who frequented St. Lambert Country Club in Montreal during the 1920s and became known for his “do-overs.” His partners preferred calling it a “mulligan.” And so the story goes.
In the high-stakes, high-tech world of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, there are no mulligans, whether you’re a seven-time Top Fuel world champion or the reigning Top Fuel titlist. So be it, says the U.S. Army duo of Tony “The Sarge” Schumacher and Antron Brown, whose respective starts in the 2013 Countdown to the Mello Yello Championship were far less than each had hoped for last weekend at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte, N.C.
Antron Brown leads off the DSR AAA Fallnationals pre-race Report
BROWNSBURG, IN – Antron Brown made a statement a year ago when the NHRA Mello Yello Series visited the
Dallas area for the second of six events in the Countdown to the Championship.
Brown rallied to win last year’s event in Texas after losing in the first round the previous week to start the Countdown playoff. That provided momentum for him to win his first NHRA world championship two months later.
And the reigning Top Fuel world champion hopes to make more noise this weekend during the AAA Fallnationals at the Texas Motorplex.
DSR Team Reports from Charlotte – Massy and Hagan Runner-Up, Beckman to the Semi’s
Funny Car world champion for Don Schumacher Racing is getting closer to the top.Beckman and the MTS Mail for Wounded Warriors/Valvoline Dodge Charger R/T advanced to the semifinals Sunday in the Carlyle Tools Carolina Nationals presented by NAPA and the opening event of the six-race Countdown to the Championship playoff.
He was able to move up one spot to fourth in the 10-driver standings with five Countdown events remaining including this weekend near Dallas at the Texas Motorplex.
Massey takes Top Fuel points lead, Hagan extends in Funny Car after runner-up finishes
CONCORD, NC – Don Schumacher Racing leaves zMAX Dragway near Charlotte with the points lead in the top two categories of the
NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series after the Carlyle Tools Carolina Nationals presented by NAPA and the opening event of the six-race Countdown to the Championship playoff.
Spencer Massey in the Battery Extender Powered by Schumacher dragster was runner-up for the Top Fuel title Sunday and moved up one spot to take over the points lead moments after Matt Hagan, whose Rocky Boots/Mopar Dodge Charger R/T also lost in his championship round, but was able to extend his points lead over teammate Ron Capps and the Carlyle Tools/NAPA team from 30 to 72 points in the 10-driver field.
Ron Capps Leads off the DSR Qualifying Reports from zMax
CONCORD, NC – Ron Capps understands drama is part of racing, but the driver of the Carlyle Tools/NAPA Funny Car got more than he prefers Saturday on the last day of qualifying for the Carlyle Tools Carolina Nationals presented by NAPA at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte.
After making a respectable pass to open Friday qualifying with a time of 4.191 seconds at a slowing speed of 257.92 mph, Capps and crew chief Rahn Tobler battled with an electrical problem in the next two sessions before their last attempt on Saturday recorded a 4.103 (308.14) that was only worthy of the No. 12 spot in Sunday’s championship eliminations field of 16. But it made them feel better heading to eliminations.
Hagan puts Rocky Boots Funny Car No. 2 with 3-second run
CONCORD, NC – Matt Hagan continued his remarkable season by registering the third 3-second run of his career Friday at zMAX Dragway
to earn the No. 2 provisional qualifying spot in the Carlyle Tools Carolina Nationals presented by NAPA.
Only the second quickest Funny Car run in NHRA Mello Yello history by Cruz Pedregon at 3.980 seconds kept Hagan, the series points leader, from the top spot heading to Saturday’s last two qualifying sessions scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3:15 p.m. before the following day’s championship eliminations, which begin at noon.
Hagan is the only one of Don Schumacher Racing’s four Funny Cars sitting in the top nine spots for the 16-car field.
