MATCHUPS SET FOR PEP BOYS NHRA TOP FUEL ALL-STAR CALLOUT, RACING ACTION CANCELLED ON FRIDAY IN GAINESVILLE

GAINESVILLE, FL – The first-round matchups for the Pep Boys NHRA Top Fuel All-Star Callout specialty race were made on Friday at Gainesville Raceway, as racing action for the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals was cancelled due to weather.

Top seed Steve Torrence, the four-time defending world champ and driver of the 11,000-horsepower Capco Contractors dragster, chose Leah Pruett, who is driving for the first-year Tony Stewart Racing team, to race in the first round of the eight-car specialty event on Saturday that features a total purse of $130,000.

“We gathered up as a crew and I got with my crew chiefs,” Torrence said. “I thought about it, they thought about it, the fans thought about it. LP has been one of our fiercest competitors for years, and we’ve gone at it head-to-head, so to put on a show for all these fans, that’s awesome. We’ll have a good time between us and we’ll put on a good show for you guys, and it’ll be a lot of fun.”

DEFENDING PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE WORLD CHAMP MATT SMITH LOOKS TO KEEP ROLLING AT AMALIE MOTOR OIL NHRA GATORNATIONALS

GAINESVILLE, FL – After waiting for years to find success at Gainesville Raceway, Pro Stock Motorcycle veteran Matt Smith has now proven to be unbeatable as of late at the historic track. The five-time and defending world champ has won the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals the past two years and is after a third straight victory at this weekend’s event in Gainesville.

Another win on his Denso Auto Parts/Stockseth/Matt Smith Racing EBR would be a big deal for Smith, who has his sights set on another fast start to the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season. The Gatornationals marks the season debut for the Pro Stock Motorcycle category and it’s always a meaningful race for the NHRA stars. Smith could never finish the job in previous years, but that all changed in 2020 and 2021.

“It’s been pretty awesome to get wins in Gainesville the last two years,” Smith said. “My whole life, that’s one of those races we’ve always wanted to win but it had always eluded me. Everyone in our class wants to win in Gainesville and Indy. If you can win at those places, you’ve accomplished something. We had ran well in Gainesville before but couldn’t cap it off until these last two years and those have meant a lot.”

DEFENDING WINNERS JOSH HART AND J.R. TODD AFTER REPEAT VICTORIES AT AMALIE MOTOR OIL NHRA GATORNATIONALS

GAINESVILLE, FL – Josh Hart enjoyed a perfect start to his career at Gainesville Raceway in 2021 and the Top Fuel rising star is now after another magical weekend at his home track during the upcoming Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals, which take place Thursday through Sunday at the legendary facility.

Hart made his Top Fuel debut at the track last year, becoming just the eighth driver in NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series history to win their professional debut and the first in 20 years. Hart added another win last year in his 11,000-horsepower R&L Carriers dragster, but the Gatornationals victory stands as a definitive highlight in his young career. A second straight victory at one of the biggest races on the NHRA circuit would be just as meaningful and Hart is just as focused as he was a year ago.

“My focus for the Gatornationals is the same as always,” Hart said. “We go up to the line to win and nothing is going to change for us. We don’t take days off. We will get everything done and reload the trailers. This will be a big race for us, and we definitely want to get another win here.”
