Memorial Weekend Tripleheader at San Antonio Raceway
BY JM Hallas
Marion, TX – To celebrate the Memorial Day holiday weekend San Antonio Raceway hosted one of its biggest events of the year. The show included, not one, not two, but three individual races, plus a wheelstanding PT Cruiser doing exhibition runs.
Headlining the event were the Texas Outlaw Pro Modified Association(TOPMA) with some of the most radical combinations of engines, bodies and graphics. Co-starring were the Southwest Superchargers that normally includes everything from Dragsters to Funny Cars.
Not to be overlooked were the local IHRA Summit Super Series bracket racers vying for track points in the Electronics(Box), Foot Brake(No-box) and Jr. Dragsters.
San Antonio Raceway Readies for Big Memorial Weekend Show

Marion, TX – This Saturday(May 28th) San Antonio Raceway hosts its “Night of Fire” show on the 1/8th mile track. The show features the Texas Outlaw Pro Modified Association(TOPMA) for its first of two visits to the speedplant just east of San Antonio.
TOPMA is some of the baddest door slammers on the planet with a variety of engine combination(blown, nitrous injected, turbo charged) displaying some of the wildest bodies and graphics. TOPMA’s first rule(and only real rule, except safety), “Run what ya brung and hope it’s enough.” They run heads up, on a .400 pro tree and a pro ladder elimination, usually tripping the timers with sub four second passes, around 200mph.
Steve Wiley will look to repeat in his return visit to SAR after taking home the $50,000 payday during the Bounty Hunters Grudge Nationals earlier in the year. Wiley had planned on running a TOPMA show, but when that show was rained out, Wiley packed up and headed to SAR. During the event Wiley knocked out Kye Kelley(Street Outlaws), James ‘Birdman’ Finney and then Ricky Delgado in the finals.
IHRA Summit Super Series @ San Antonio Raceway, 5/21/16
By JM Hallas
Marion, TX – San Antonio Raceway hosted another round of IHRA Summit Super Series bracket racing, the fourth of the season, on the 1/8 mile track outside San Antonio. Despite gray drizzly skies, a good field of Electronics(Box) and Foot Brake(No-box) racers singed in along with the Jr Dragsters and Street Class.
Track crews had the surface ready for racing, but after one round of time trials for Jr. Dragsters and Foot Brakers, Mother Nature had other ideas. A heavy drizzle/light rain fell for nearly an hour delaying practice runs, but crews held the track and as the sun broke through it was quickly ready for action again.
Heavy air and changing conditions made for some tricky tuning throughout the day. When the sun was on the track temperatures were over 135, while under cloud cover they would drop to below 125. Other than a couple drivetrain failures, there were no incidents during the event.

In the Small Tire Class, $10,000 was there for taking with $7,000 for the Sportsman Class, $5,000 for the Truck Shootout.
Some of the big names were in attendance including Kye Kelly from Street Outlaws, James “Birdman” Finney out of the Houston area and of course San Antonio’s own Mike Murillo on hand as of the Bounty Hunter No Prep Nationals crew.
San Antonio Raceway Kicks Off 2016 Season
By JM Hallas
Marion, TX – San Antonio raceway kicked off it’s 2016 season with its ‘Back to the Track’ weekend of racing on the track just east of San Antonio. After undergoing some track repair last weekend, the track was ready for business with an open test-n-tune on Friday night. Saturday featured a triple-header of sorts with a non-points Summit Super Series bracket race during the day, followed by another test-n-tune session in the evening along with family night.
Family gives the kids a chance to try their hand as they race their tricycles and big wheels, plus other kids entertainment on the midway.
During a break in rounds, Nancy Matter’s Guardian for Heros, Alcohol Funny Car made a test hit. Unfortunately for her, either the parachutes failed or throttle got hung sending her long at the top end into the hay bales. The car had some body damage, but she was alright.
San Antonio Raceway Readies for 2016 Season
Marion, TX – If Saturdays open test-n-tune is any indication of the season that awaits San Antonio Raceway, the future is bright for 2016. Nearly 350 street cars signed in through tech, plus the dozens of bracket racers utilizing their own “X” numbers and another handful of grudge race cars, filling the pits to capacity. The session was originally intended to only run until 5:00pm, but with the abundance of cars lined up for testing officials continued running well into the night.
Early in the morning after a band of showers passed through it looked like only the brave would venture out, but by midday the sun broke through bringing in cars from all over, along with several hundred racing fans.
