Funny Car Chaos Eliminations Report from Alamo City Motorplex
Marion TX – With two rounds of qualifying under their belts the Funny Car Chaos group ran one more round to set the two 8-car fields 
competing in eliminations later in the day. Terry Haddock leads ‘group A’ qualifying with a record setting set of numbers while Andy Mears comes in atop of ‘group B’, with everyone having a chance to improve their number and move up, or down, the elimination ladder.

Funny Car Chaos at Alamo City Motorplex
Marion, TX – For those missing the cackle of Nitro Funny Cars it’s a big weekend at Alamo City Motorplex, just outside of San Antonio. It’s 
been several years since a field of Funny Cars raced in anger, but the Funny Car Chaos group stepped up to fill the void. The FCC group is a touring series running tracks around the country in several states, for championship points.
With two events in the 2020 books(Lufkin, Tx, Oskaloosa, Ia) defending Champion Ken Singleton(High Risk) leads the points by 9 over Steve Vang(Weekend Warrior) and Chris Schneider(Brutus) tied for second.
Some of the cars closely resemble their modern day counterparts, while others carry nostalgia bodies, but still pack a potent punch. Nitro fumes and header flames at night always bring in the fans to experience the adrenaline rush as they leave the line running the 1/8th mile track, some in under 4 seconds, and near 200mph.
Friday was day 1 for qualifying for the FCC class, with one more session set for Saturday, before eliminations later in the day. Qualifying is different than national sanctions being broken down into two groups based on qualifying times, the top 8 and the next 8 in a second group, with each group running their own rounds of eliminations. Double your pleasure, double your fun, so to speak.
Knock the Dust Off Bracket Race @ Alamo City Motorplex
Marion, TX – With nearly every other thing in the state postponed or canceled, Alamo City Motorplex held a ‘Knock 
the Dust Off’ bracket race on the 1/8 mile speed plant, just outside San Antonio. As the regular points season is scheduled to begin on March 28th, the show gave drivers a final chance to shake down their cars. It also attracted several racers from the Houston area giving them the opportunity to race.
It was nearly an ideal day weather-wise with temperatures in the mid 80’s and a track surface that was nearly perfect. I can’t recall seeing so many drivers hit their numbers, just still end up on the losing end a race. It all came down to the crucial starting line advantage.
Besides the NHRA Super Pro, Pro and JR. Dragster, a street class and motorcycle class was added to the racing card. With a good number of Super Pro cars on hand a Quick 16 Shootout was included.
For the Love of Bracket Racing at Alamo City MotorPlex

Marion, TX – Alamo City MotorPlex kicked off its 2020 racing with a three-day Valentines weekend event run on the 
1/8 mile, just outside of San Antonio. Friday night was an open test-n-tune with cool night temperatures providing big horsepower.
Saturday and Sunday would see the Super Pro(Box), Pro(No-box) and Jr Dragsters in action during the day with more moderate temperatures and a bit more heat in the track. After a couple rounds of time trials and a drivers meeting, the racing action kicked off around high noon under cloudy skies and a track temp of only 75. Throughout eliminations the track temp remained consistent in the mid 70’s.
This years ACMP season was briefly up in the air when last years track manager took leave and moved to north Texas. Elaine Hewitt stepped up to fill the role of track manager and keep racing alive. Hewitt, whose father raced at the track, is no stranger to ACMP. In the past she’s raced ACMP and Alamo Dragway, plus served in various positions since 2008, under different owners/promoters. Her knowledge of the track, local racers and racing, and past experience will be a huge asset to the facility.
Alamo City Motorplex Fall Turkey Shootout
Marion, TX – With the end of the season just around the corner, Alamo City Motorplex held a pre-Thanksgiving 
Special, the Fall Turkey Shootout. The day started out with a bracket race for the Super Pro, Pro, Motorcycles and Jr. Dragsters.
Following the bracket race it was open test-n-tune giving some guys a chance to tune up for the last big race of the year, Winter Meltdown 4 no-prep event the beginning of December. Also slated was an index race for the 4.90, 5.80 and 7.00 classes.
The years NHRA points season was finished in October so it was open competition for the cash and bragging rights until next year. This years Alamo City Motorplex class champions were David Bills(Super Pro), Gene Herbold(Pro), Ronald Gordner(Sportsman), James Marlett(Motorcycle) and Reilly Garceau(Jr. Dragster.)
NHRA Summit Racing Series Bracket Race #6 @ Alamo City Motorplex 8/31/19
Marion, TX – As the NHRA Division 4 Finals approach and the points season winds down, round #6 of the Alamo 
City Motorplex Summit Racing Series set up drivers for the big race at the Texas Motorplex, September 14-16. The track was in excellent shape despite surface temperatures of near 120 in time trials, cooling to about 105 as first round of eliminations hit the track.
While the official track points still have two more races remaining, qualifiers for team finals would be determined at the end of the night. In Super Pro it’s David Bills leading the way over Greg Meuth by 20 with a pair of Hernandez’, Ronnie and Jonathan, third and fourth and Tina Hudel rounding out the top five. In Pro Gene Herbold heads the field by 24 over Corky Weeks, with Harold Shimek, Chuck Van Buren and Gilbert Hernadez.
The Sportsman class has Ronald Gordner out front by only 5 over Rhett Floyd, with Shelby Spencer(gone off to college), her dad Jim Spencer and Trent Johnson in the top five. Motorcycle class shows Ricky Kay out front of wife, Brenda, with Devin Monaco third, Michael Mathews fourth and Mad Mike fifth.
Weekend Results from the NHRA Summit Series Bracket Race at Alamo City Motorplex

Marion, Tx – Alamo City Motorplex hosted race #5 of their NHRA Summit Series Brackets Races on the 1/8 mile 
track Saturday night. On-track action was as hot as the south Texas sun with track temperatures early in the evening still hovering around 130. As the sun set, the track surface became a little more manageable(90’s), but gave tuners some denser air to deal with as the humidity increased.
Near the midway point of the season the points races are beginning to shape up in all classes. The Super Pro is being led by former asphalt circle track driver Greg Meuth by seven over Ronnie Hernandez, with David Bills, M. Deberry and Jonathan Hernandez in the top five.
Corky Weeks leads the way in the Pro class with a five point margin over Gene Herbold, with Lee Miller and Dennis Soefje tied for third fifteen behind. Ron Gordner paces the Sportsman field with D. Hamilton and Shelby Spencer tied for second twelve back.
IHRA Summit Super Series at San Antonio Raceway

Marion, TX – As the IHRA Summit Super Series Bracket Racing points season comes to a conclusion San Antonio 
Raceway hosted its final series race, with double points on the line. With extra points, class championships are still up for grabs as well as seating position for the IHRA Team Finals held at Pine Valley Raceway Oct. 5th-8th.
While some classes are separated by only one or two rounds of racing among the top five, others are somewhat comfortable in their position. Although double points throw things up in the air for everyone. One bad reaction time, one breakage, one break out could change the final points. Another kicker in the points chase is drivers allowed to drop one race, their worst, making it difficult for me to calculate the final points
IHRA Summit Super Series at San Antonio Raceway

Marion, TX – Saturday evening it was back to Summit Super Series Bracket Racing on the 1/8th mile at San Antonio 
Raceway. This would be the sixth round of points racing on the drag strip located just east of San Antonio. Coming to the midway portion of the Summit Series season, points races are already beginning to take shape.
In the Electronics(Box) class it’s former San Antonio Raceway promoter Todd Zampese leading the way by a couple rounds over former track and IHRA World Finals champ, Scott Ball. Todd Robinson, Greg Meuth and Mike Atkinson round out the top five.
In Foot Brake(No-Box) it’s Dennis Soefje by a mere two points over Harold Shimick with Todd Zampese, Wendell Dockery and Joe Montoya in the top five.
Nitro Funny Cars and Summit Super Series @ San Antonio Raceway
Marion, TX – San Antonio Raceway hosted the Nitro Funny Cars Friday for qualifying and Saturday for eliminations. 
Along with the special show it was another round of IHRA Summit Super Series bracket racing on the 1/8 mile drag strip just outside of San Antonio.
While most of the south-central tracks, both circle and drag strips, were falling to rain outs, San Antonio Raceway dodged the storms to get the event in. A brief shower brought a halt to time trials, but once it passed it was back to racing. The potential for rain probably held back the car count some and spectators as well.
