Brown, Matco Tools team pace Top Fuel field at Epping, Johnson Jr. leads DSR Funny Cars for Make-A-Wish
The 2012 NHRA Top Fuel champion, who is four round wins shy of 500, claimed his second No. 1 qualifying award of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello season and 36th of his career to complete qualifying on Saturday at Epping.
Brown’s DSR teammates also finished in the top half of the Top Fuel qualifying order at the NHRA’s second visit to the Epping, NH track. Spencer Massey, who won at Epping last June, qualified No. 6 in the Battery Extender powered by Schumacher dragster at 3.796-seconds. Massey’s final qualifying lap was the quickest of the session as he also clocked top speed of the event at 326.63 mph. Tony Schumacher, the winningest Top Fuel driver in NHRA history, will race from the No. 8 position for the U.S. Army.
Tommy Johnson Jr, the most recent Funny Car winner on tour last weekend at Bristol, Tenn., continued the solid performance for the Make-A-Wish Dodge team qualifying a DSR-best No. 4 at 4.033-seconds Friday evening under the lights at New England Dragway. He’s joined by Jack Beckman No. 6, Matt Hagan No. 8, and Ron Capps No. 10.
