Quick 32 Series Grand Bend Finals to be Contested at TMP This Weekend

Courtesy of Quick 32

GRAND BEND, ONTARIO – Although a winner has yet to be decided in round two of the Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts, one thing is certain: the victor will be a competitor who has not won an event in the popular drag race series.

Rain hampered the final two rounds of the race, held during the RPM Magazine Family PowerFest & Media Weekend at the Grand Bend Motorplex June 25-27.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series is divided into two classes, the Top Dragster, and the Top Sportsman. Competitors from each class race among themselves, then the Top Dragster entry and the Top Sportsman entry do battle to decide the overall event winner.

With the Top Dragster final still not complete, Melanie Simmons of Orillia, Ontario will go up against Scott Wildgust of Wartburg, Ontario. Simmons, who qualified number three in the 16-car field with her now-supercharged entry, has never gone this many rounds in Quick 32 Sportsman Series racing. She will face Wildgust, a former Top Sportsman racer who qualified second.

Gary Mater’s Wild Ride at RPM Magazine Power Fest

GRAND BEND, ONTARIO – Gary Mater took a wild ride during round 2 of Pro Modified qualifying at the RPM Family Power Fest.  The twin turbo mount left straight at the hit but drifted toward the centerline as he closed in on the 1/8 mile finish line on his 5.113 133.29 MPH run.  It looked like he had the car gathered up when it turned left into the retaining wall at about the 1100 foot mark.  Gary was uninjured in the incident.  Unfortunately, the same could not be said for his beautiful 37 coupe!

Mike Janis’ Eaton Aeroquip Team Expecting Big Crowd in Norwalk

Courtesy of Mike Janis Racing Inc.

Elma, NY– According to Google Maps, Norwalk Raceway Park is just under a four hour drive from Mike Janis’ family owned Jan-Cen Motorsports shop in Elma, NY; making it the closest national event to home for the Eaton Aeroquip backed team. With its proximity to Western New York one could bet there will be many supporters of Janis and his team at the event.

“We started getting calls and emails weeks ago about Norwalk,” said Janis. “We’ll have a pretty large group there. Western New York will be well represented, not just by us but, Super Gas is full of guys from home and a lot of our customers like, Bob Bauer, Marc Caruso, Jon Pellicane, and Tommy Allen. So, I’m looking forward to the Friday night Lancaster crowd being there.”

WARTBURG, ONTARIO – After driving a Top Sportsman 1957 Chevy in Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts competition in 2009, Scott Wildgust is racing this year in a car with the engine behind him.

The team debuted a Top Dragster entry at the opening round at Cayuga last month, and with team co-owner Bill White, Wildgust is looking to a positive season of racing.

“The car has a lot more potential,” noted Wildgust, who qualified number one in two Quick 32 Sportsman Series events last year.  He also qualified number three with a 6.839-second pass at the 2010 opener, this time with the new 2010 Bos dragster, and went to the semi-final round.

The Top Dragster is powered by a 400-cubic inch small block Chevy engine, courtesy of the shops of Ajax Engines. A Kobelco supercharger sits atop the engine, which is fueled with an ERD (Engine Research & Development) fuel system. A two-speed Powerglide helps get the power to the rear wheels.
