Courtesy fo Quick 32

BUFFALO, NY – A new powerplant under the hood of Dan Flanigan’s 2002 Firebird Top Sportsman car should provide some more force for him when he takes to the track for the 2012 Quick 32 Sportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts season.

“I’m super excited,” said Flanigan about the new aluminum 665-cubic inch engine. “We’re going to have 300 more horsepower. You have to run fast to qualify in this series.”

Flanigan only raced three times last year in Quick 32 Sportsman Series competition, and was a quarter-round finalist in the second event, the Xtreme Mayhem Nationals at Cayuga Dragway. He said that the car never performed as expected last year, and is looking for more success in 2012.

Goodguys Racing Team Back on Track This Weekend in Vegas

Courtesy of Goodguys Racing

Pleasanton, CA – With the thrill and excitement of a brand new drag racing season upon us, the Goodguys Racing Team led by Marc Meadors and the “Pure Hell2” ’69 Camaro Pro Mod machine are locked, loaded and ready for a run at the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association series title. Outfitted with a trick new DMPE Mark II carbon injector and a top secret hi-end torque converter, the team is confident they can take the flaming ’69 Camaro into battle and eclipse last year’s second place points finish in WCOPMA action.

This weekend, the team will venture south from their Pleasanton, California home base to the PSCA Ford Racing “Record Breaker Nationals” at the Strip @ Las Vegas Motor Speedway to lock horns with the competition in the Pro Street division. Although not their primary racing circuit, it was at last fall’s PSCA Street Car Supernationals @ the Strip Meadors qualified #2 in a national field of the country’s best racers running 5.92 @ 246mph. In fact, every run the Pure Hell2 ’69 Camaro made at the Supernationals in November was a sub-six second effort. Meadors asserts “he’s out to avenge the quarter final red light that took me out. I could have easily won that race” he grinned.

Demke and Team Peen Taste Sweet Victory at the Winternationals

Courtesy of  Penn Rite Racing

Pomona, CA – Chris Demke and the Peen Rite Top Alcohol Dragster Team went to the 2012 NHRA race season opener with a hunger. Their Winternationals victory turned out to be a feast. The sugared treat at the end was Demke’s final round 5.281 @ 270.32. It was low ET of the event, and that has Demke and the Maddern Racing Team planning for the future.

“The win was so sweet, and the 5.28 was icing on the cake,” said Demke. “There is no better way to start a season than with a win, and we have high hopes.”

The race did not start out on such of a high point. Qualifying was a cat and mouse game with the weather related tune-up decisions. The short field and cooler temperatures was an invitation to turn the knobs up and go for the top time. The car was set on kill, but the track had other ideas. Ending up in the #4 qualifying position, the Peen Rite/801 Racing’s future was not set.

First round tire shake against Garrett Bateman made the run interesting. Demke traded the lead back and forth, but pulled out the win. In the second round of eliminations, Demke was paired against Brooks Brown, who was being tuned by former Maddern Racing crewmember and good friend Adam Rhoades.

Coughlin #2 in Pro Stock Points after one race with new car!

Courtesy of Jegs

PHOENIX, AZ – Five-time world champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. wasted little time in re-establishing himself as a top contender in the NHRA Pro Stock class with a surprising runner-up finish at last Sunday’s season-opening event in Pomona, Calif. Now the 67-time national event winner turns his attention to Firebird International Raceway and this weekend’s 28th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals.

“We had a big day in Pomona, for sure,” Coughlin said. “It’s given the guys reason to smile and it put a little pep in everyone’s step. At the same time, as all the veterans on this race team know, we’ve got a long way to go, so we’ll enjoy the next few days then get over to Phoenix and see if we can’t make some more memories.”

While it’s not a shock to see Coughlin at the top of the rankings, it is astonishing to see such early success given the fact his team didn’t exist at this time one year ago. Coughlin didn’t race professionally in 2011 and didn’t even entertain a return to the pro ranks until late in the spring. That’s when he partnered with Mopar to field the JEGS.com / Mopar Dodge Avenger.

British Drag Racing Hall of Fame 2012 Presentations

Courtesy of British Drag Racing Hall of Fame

Birmingham , UK – February 11th saw the official presentations of the 2012 British Drag Racing Hall of Fame (BDRHoF) awards as part of the joint APIRA – SPRC Champions Night held in Solihull, near Birmingham in the UK. Thanks to some flexibility afforded by the organising clubs the BDRHoF were able to present the crystal tablet ’Bootsies’ to Frank and Phil Brachtvogel, Barry Sheavills, Dave Lee Travis and Carl Olson.

DLT was able to have his presentation earlier in the evening than usual as he had to leave promptly to prepare for his live Sunday radio show. British Drag Racing Hall of Fame Chairman Stuart Bradbury was joined by Steve Trice, Technical Director of US Automotive to hand out the awards, and for the first time at this event Brian Taylor was handed the microphone to compere these presentations.

All inductees were given time to express their feelings to those attending about receiving this accolade, something that is becoming a prestigious honour across the drag racing world. Probably Carl Olson’s attendance demonstrates this most clearly. He flew into Heathrow at 10.15 Saturday morning and departed Heathrow for Los Angeles on the Sunday afternoon – missing the Don Garlits 80th birthday celebrations at Pomona to be with us in the UK. On his return to California he sent this e-mail.

Dragstar.ca and ISP Form Fitting Seats a Plus in PMRA and Quick 32 Series!

Courtesy of Quick 32

WATERLOO, ON – When it comes to drag racing, speed is obviously important, but a more vital factor is safety.

A relatively new product in drag racing is the form-fitting engineered seat for the driver, and dozens of teams in the Pro Modified Racing Association and the Quick 32 Sportsman Series have installed custom seats from Dragstar.ca and Innovative Safety Products, who support both the drag racing series.

“The business has done well,” said Dragstar.ca’s Marc McCrae, who has been preparing and installing the seats for four years. “We make drivers more consistent, more comfortable, and more confident.”

Built as a foam insert, the ISP “pour in place” method fills all the voids around the driver, protecting the driver’s torso 100 percent. The material is inherently self-extinguishing in case of fire, and will not drip or melt when in contact with a flame, and is stable to temperatures up to 400 degrees without deformation. Carbon X material is used to finish the seat insert.

“The driver sits in the same position every time,” said McCrae. “The foam swells around the driver, and makes them more comfortable in the car.
