ROBERT HIGHT AND AUTO CLUB SECURE NO. 1 QUALIFIER AT NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS

CHANDLER, AZ — Robert Hight and the Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro team claimed the No. 1 qualifying position Saturday at the Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals. Hight’s Funny Car teammate John Force is No. 8 and in Top Fuel Austin Prock is sitting sixth with Brittany Force in 13th.

For the second consecutive race weekend, the second time at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park and the 62nd time in his career, Robert Hight is sitting at the top of the Funny Car class with his Auto Club team.

Following a short first day of qualifying due to inclement weather, Hight and his crew, headed by Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham, came out swinging for the fences Saturday afternoon. They took the top spot in the third qualifying session with an impressive 3.882-second pass at 327.27 mph that gave them the opportunity to be in the last pair of the night. After 12 Funny Cars took their last go at improving their ETs on Saturday evening, Hight had slipped to the No. 2 spot. As the final pair, the two-time championship team ran a stellar 3.867-second pass at 329.91 mph to retake the No. 1 spot.

“We were No. 1 going into this session and it got taken away. (Matt) Hagan got it so we were going back up there to get it back. There’s no reason to even make that run unless you’re trying to improve and go fast. These are tricky conditions and I knew if it could get past the tree it was going be fast because that’s the tricky spot here,” Hight said. “When its conditions like this, cold, you’ve got to hit it hard at the start and knock a bunch of timing out. In the middle of the track this thing was really pulling because it was going 286 mph at half-track and it’s been awhile since a Funny Car has done that. It was a fun run. I had my hands full at the other end. I was a little late on the chutes because I had to keep it off the wall and it got hopping down there so it was exciting from the step of the gas clear to the finish line.”

ROBERT HIGHT AND AUTO CLUB LAND NO. 2 POSITION AT NHRA NORTHWEST NATIONALS

KENT, WA — Two-time and reigning world champion Robert Hight maintained his No. 2 qualifying position at the 31st annual CatSpot NHRA Northwest Nationals Saturday at Pacific Raceways just outside of Seattle. Courtney Force held onto her No. 3 position and John Force muscled his way into the No. 10 spot. In Top Fuel, Brittany Force will start race day from the No. 8 position.

Robert Hight will begin his NHRA Northwest Nationals championship defense from the No. 2 position after racing to a 3.919-second pass at 327.82 mph on Friday evening. Saturday, Hight and his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car had a solid 4.010-second pass and smoked the tires to run 6.346-seconds but with good early numbers, a good sign as they head into similar weather conditions on race day.

“You know, we pushed it pretty hard tonight. We were trying to run 3.95 this evening and it probably just wasn’t going to happen under those conditions. The numbers looked good early on but we had one good run today and, after tonight, we also know where our limits are for tomorrow,” Hight explained. “I’m excited. We have a tough competitor with Gary Densham. He’s one of the guys that taught me how to do this back when he was at JFR. Always have to be ready for him, but I really like our chances of repeating at this race.”

AAA Chevrolet driver Robert Hight earns 50th career No. 1 qualifier, looks for victory in Epping

Courtney and Brittany Qualify #2 in Funny Car and Top Fuel, John Force at Lucky #13

EPPING, NH – Robert Hight took his AAA Chevrolet Camaro SS Funny Car to new heights Saturday, setting the New England Dragway track records for elapsed time and speed to earn the 50th No. 1 qualifier of his stellar career.

Hight will start from the No. 1 spot for Sunday’s NHRA New England Nationals, marking the 13th season – all consecutively – he’s earned at least one No. 1.

Hight’s 50th No. 1 qualifiers ties with him with the legendary Don Prudhomme in the Funny Car category.

“That’s pretty cool,” Hight said. “Fifteen years ago, I never would’ve thought my name would’ve even come in the same sentence as Don Prudhomme’s. He’s one of the greatest of all time. He dominated in his day. Fifty No. 1s – that’s pretty awesome. To have my name in the record books with Don Prudhomme is pretty surreal. It’s harder and harder to get these No. 1 qualifiers.”
