The Don Carter Motorsports team nearly doubles their WCOPMA points lead after Woodburn

Sacramento, Ca – Don Carter’s driver, Bret Williamson, is 3-for-3 in final round appearances this season while running with the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association. During the July 10-11 weekend, Bret once again made it to the final round at Woodburn Dragstrip to face Jay Diedrich.

The team traveled to Woodburn, Oregon chasing an engine problem. They worked with the fuel system and MSD timing boxes before the event and unloaded the car untested after the changes. On the first qualifying pass they made it down with a very soft 6.66. They adjusted the tune up for the second qualifying hit and ran another mid 6-second pass but dropped a couple cylinders during the run. On the third and final session they improved to a 6.42 which placed them in the number three qualifying position.

During Sunday’s eliminations Williamson was faced against Cecil Matthews in his 1955 T-Bird in the first round. Off the line Cecil took the early lead with a great .007 reaction time but by half track the Studebaker drove around Cecil and charged down the back half of the track to take the win with an improving 6.34.

That round win would put Williamson in the final to face Diedrich’s “Evil Outlaw” 1957 Chevy.

Once the burnouts were complete and both cars staged the race was on. Diedrich was off the line first but the Don Carter Motorsports Studebaker runs the front half of the track quicker than Diedrich’s car and by half track it was a close race again. Both cars are known to run great back-half numbers, probably the two best back-halfing cars running in the WCOPMA, but as soon as it got good…it went bad. Williamson felt some vibration in the engine and instead of staying in it and damaging the engine he clicked it off early allowing Diedrich to take the win with a very quick 6.15 to Williamson’s coasting 6.50 @ 171.

The Don Carter Motorsports team is really on a roll this 2010 season. With this being the first year running the Studebaker they have already dipped into the 5-second zone more than once and made it to all three final rounds so far with the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association with one win and two runner-ups. Going into the Woodburn event they led by 42 points and after this weekend’s runner-up to Diedrich they expanded their points lead to 81 over second place. With three races remaining on the WCOPMA’s schedule it looks like it is going to be tough to knock Bret Williamson/the Don Carter Motorsports team out of first place…they are starting to taste that championship!
