Commerce, GA – Team Aeroquip’s Mike Janis came up a hair short this weekend in NHRA Get Screened America Pro Modified competition at the 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals. Janis who qualified number one with a 5.91 elapsed time at over 243 miles per hour used a little luck and some hard work to make his way to the finals.

Janis was the beneficiary of two red lights during competition, one from Brad Personett and another from Rick Stivers. Janis also defeated Troy Coughlin at the wheel of his Jeg’s backed Machine.

In the finals Janis faced off with Sweden’s Michael Gulvquist. Gulvquist was filling in for Raymond Commisso in his R2B2 ride. Commisso’ father passed ealier in the week and the entire Mike Janis Racing/ Aeroquip team sends their best to Commisso and his family.

Gulvquist was first off the line and led to the finish taking a slim margin of victory as Janis’ Firebird labored down the 1320 with a cylinder out. Gulvquist took the win with a 6.00 to Janis’ 6.08. With the win Gulvquist made history; becoming the first European to win an NHRA national event.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD will televise 30-minutes of racing highlights from the Get Screened America Pro Mod Series portion of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals on Sunday, May 23 at 11:30 a.m. (EDT).

In other Team Aeroquip news Todd Robertson took his Aeroquip sponsored Chevy Cobalt to the finals of the Napa Auto Parts Run What Ya Brung class during Milan Dragway’s Aeroquip Performance Products Heads Up Series.

Robertson qualified second for the eight mile event with a 4.14 pass at just over 177 miles per hour. Robertson’s 177 was top speed of the meet.

On his way to the finals Robertson defeated Rob Vischer and John Powers. Robertson’s ran 4.07 e.t. against Powers setting low elapsed time of the meet.

When the finals came around it was well after 11 P.M. and the track surface was beginning to form dew, causing it to become slick. In the finals Robertson squared off with New Boston, Michigan’s Bill Rowe. Both cars immediately lost traction; when both drivers recovered both cars were headed for the centerline. Robertson was first to cross the centerline but avoided any damage. Rowe wasn’t so lucky; taking out the centerline cones damaging his Pontiac. In a first or worst situation, both drivers fouled out equally but, Robertson was the first so, the win went to Rowe.
