PEDREGON, CAMRY RUN 3.991 TO TAKE TOP SPOT IN READING NHRA QUALIFYING

TORRANCE, CA  Cruz Pedregon ran a blistering 3.991-second pass in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry to take number one qualifier honors Toyota Logofor Sunday’s NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Penn.

The performance gives Pedregon his third pole position of the season.  He previously took the top spot at Gainesville and Englishtown.  He went on to win Englishtown’s Toyota Summernationals for his 35th career Funny Car victory.

“We were hoping for a low 4.0,” said Pedregon, who’s now qualified in the top four in three of the last four races. “The three second was a bonus. I was a little surprised (that it held]. There are some great cars. These cars are very touchy and finicky and I did feel like there would be two or three three-second runs up there, but hey we blew the motor up so we definitely got everything out of it.”

Del Worsham qualified seventh and will square off with teammate Alexis DeJoria in a match-up of Kalitta Motorsports Camrys in Sunday’s first round.   Chad Head qualified 11th and Tony Pedregon earned the 14th spot.

In Top Fuel, Sunday’s first round of eliminations will feature a pair of all-Toyota match-ups.  A week after winning in St. Louis, Antron Brown qualified fifth on Saturday and will match-up with 12th-seeded Khalid alBalooshi.   In addition, Shawn Langdon qualified seventh and will race fellow Toyota driver Richie Crampton.

Today’s Mello Yello Drag Racing Series qualifications can be seen Sunday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN2, prior to Sunday’s eliminations beginning at 8:00 p.m.  This weekend’s race is the fourth of the six-race NHRA Countdown to the Championship playoffs.
