Morgan & Katie Lucas to Host 9th Annual Eric Medlen Golf Tourney
Brownsburg, IN – NHRA fans and competitors are circling Thursday, August 31 on their calendars and getting ready to lend their support to the 9th Annual Eric Medlen Memorial Golf Tournament.
The tournament benefits the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent in Indianapolis, Ind., and has long been one of the favorite charity events of the season for the drag racing community. Past and present NHRA stars including Morgan Lucas, Brandon Bernstein, Shawn Langdon, Steve Torrance, JR Todd, Alan Johnson and Ritchie Crampton are confirmed to tee it up with the race fans at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Indianapolis before the biggest race of the year – the U.S. Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway August 29-September 3.
Morgan Lucas and his wife Katie founded the Eric Medlen Memorial Golf Tournament in 2009. A former NHRA Top Fuel star, Morgan recently retired from competition to focus on his role as Senior Vice President of Sales at Lucas Oil.
“Eric was a friend, a wonderful person as well as a terrific competitor who touched a lot of lives during his time with us, and this is just a small way for us to honor him,” Lucas said.
“Katie and I are honored by the support from our friends at the NHRA who come every year to play in this Golf Tournament. Their names bring in the fans and we are so thankful for everyone who participates. The tournament is a lot of fun to play in and supports a wonderful cause – the Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.”
Medlen was a popular NHRA Funny Car driver who died during a testing accident in 2007 in Gainesville, Fla. He loved spending time with children, so in his honor Morgan and Katie Lucas founded the tournament in 2009.
More than $425,000 has been raised since the tournament began and an MRI room in the hospital was dedicated in Medlen’s honor in 2014, in large part because of the success of the golf tournament.
