MILLION DOLLAR RACE DRAG RACE – SUNDAY RESULTS

With the actual Million Dollar Race event winner Rodney Phagan and fellow finalist Cecil Hankins both enjoying their victories, there remained Sunday_winner02one more race of the event, the final Triple 20 with $20,000 on the line for the winner.

Special awards are also part of the weekend festivities. A free Golf Cart Give-A-Way awarded a brand new customized OK Motorsports golf cart to a random tech card drawing. It was Rusty Ashmore who drove off with that prize. Best Appearing Car was Dale Simon. Jeff Mandell won a set of Brodix SR20 cylinder heads for the best losing package of the first three days of the event. The Long Distance award went to Bakersfield, California’s Don Gatlin. The Youngest Driver Award was 16-year old Tyler Bohannon and the VIP Club award of a new dragster went to Fargo, North Dakota’s Dustin Jones. And the Bounty Awards for the person who beat the previous day’s winner were given to Jimmy Sweet, Josh McDaniel and Kurt Harrington.

In the seventh round, there remained six drivers eligible for the win; Brad Clarke, Jeff Serra, Johnny Ezell, Todd Burke, Brandon Taylor and “Big Jed” Jared Pennington. In the round, Taylor advanced over Ezell, Big Jed over Burke and Clarke ended Serra’s day.

By virtue of his .003 reaction time in that round, Clarke received that all important bye run to the final while Pennington and Taylor battled it out. Pennington might have missed the “Tree a little with an .021 reaction time, but Taylor was slightly worse giving Big Jed room at the finish line to take the win light.

And then there were two… In the final, Clarke turned on the red light by .004 while Pennington was… well… green. Didn’t matter though. Big Jed, who has announced all weekend in addition to his driving duties, said afterwards, “I’m just blessed that the good Lord gave me a mouth to announce and blessed me with so many friends that have helped me throughout the years. Hoosier, Brodix, Quick Fuel and others have al stood by me this year ‘cause I done really broke up some stuff. But I have to thank them all and I know my son, JJ and my wife are home celebrating right with me now.”

Final tally of the event for 2014 has Chad McKee winning over Tim Thomas on Thursday’s Triple 20. Friday’s Triple 20 had Scotty Richardson winning over Bruce Mouat. And the Million main event was Rodney Phagan over Cecil Hankin.

Jennifer Folk of Folk Promotions said, “This race is only possible with the racers who show up to race and the sponsors who are aware of the support they receive from the backbone of the sport. We can’t thank either group more for their help in making the CARS Protection Plus Million Dollar Race the success it is. Thank you to all.

“We’re really very excited about next year,” Folk added, “because it will be the 20th anniversary of this great race and we have a lot of new and exciting things to plan for in order to make it a very special affair.”
