Mission, BC –Last weekend the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association held their third event of the 2012 season at Mission Raceway Park in Mission, British Columbia, Canada. It marked the first time the WCOPMA held an event outside of the ‘States and Mike Maggio made sure it would be memorable.

Maggio led qualifying with a string of three 5-second runs, the best being a 5.826/253.73 to take to number 1 spot. Not far behind Maggio was Dan Nickelson with a career best 5.890/229.29 followed by Rod Burbage’s 6.022/239.36. Jay Syverson, Joe Delehay, Wade Sjostrom, Duane Grosart and Trevor Lowe filled out the rest of the 8-car field.

Unfortunately Lowe had a top end crash during the second qualifying session on Saturday. Thankfully he walked away from the accident with no serious injury but would not be able to return on Sunday for eliminations which gave Maggio a single in round 1. Maggio ripped off another 5-second pass going 5.905/261.09 on his first round single; a world record MPH number for a Pro Mod type car that is stirring quite a debate throughout the internet.

Maggio would end up being the only top half qualifier going on to round 2 after Burbage went -.004 red against Sjostrom, Delehay ran his best pass of the weekend going 6.187/223.10 driving through tire shake to defeat Syverson. Grosart picked up the round win after Nickelson went on a wild ride at about 330 feet crossing lanes and tagging the wall. Nickelson also walked away with no serious injury after the wreck.

In round two Maggio would face Delehay and Sjostrom would face Grosart. Delehay knew he had to hop it up to beat the consistent 5-second car of Maggio but he hopped it up a little too much shaking the tires at the hit and watching Maggio run his slowest pass of the weekend but still taking the round win with a 6.194/255.39. Sjostrom was running in the mid 6.50-range all weekend and got around Grosart in round 2 with a 6.653/209.49 to claim a spot in the final round against the Maggio Motorsports team.

When the remaining two cars were ready for the final round it was time to declare an event winner. Maggio was up for the challenge and ran a 5.940/261.02 to get the event win over Sjostrom’s tire smoking 10.116/176.02.

Mike Maggio and the Maggio Motorsports team ran the table in Mission qualifying number 1, setting a new WCOPMA ET record (5.826), winning the event, claiming the RBS Superchargers low qualifier bonus as well as the Brad Anderson Enterprises event winner bonus and to top it all off running world record speeds, backing it up within 1-percent and giving everyone something to talk about until the next time the team hits the track.

The West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod Association’s next event will be at Sonoma Raceway (formally Infineon Raceway) in Sonoma, California on July 20-22 and the Maggio Motorsports team will be in attendance trying to back up the 260+ MPH runs seen in Mission to prove it was not a fluke. The track, air and power will definitely be there for Maggio to repeat history and take claim of the world’s fastest Pro Mod.
