Goddard and twin-turbo Metropolitan looking to go quicker in 2013

GUELPH, ON – We are learning, we are always learning. Driving a 1958 Nash Metropolitan-bodied Top Sportsman entry in the Quick 32 Wes GoddardSportsman Series presented by NAPA Auto Parts is unique in itself, but the twin turbochargers on the big-block Chevrolet engine have presented Wes Goddard and his team with a potent combination when all the variables are correct.

We are still learning with the turbos, explained Goddard. It never ends.

While turbocharging is not unique in the racing world, it is still relatively new in drag racing at this level, and trial and error is a big part of the set-up. Goddard’s custom Metropolitan car body is powered by a 509-cubic inch Chevy engine with a pair of 76-mm Precision Turbochargers that make a lot of power, in this case about 2400 horsepower, according to Goddard.

This is backed up with a two-speed Powerglide-based transmission and a Big Stuff 3 fuel system. The car is capable of speeds just over seven seconds at 213 mph in the quarter-mile.

Goddard drives and tunes the Hell Billy Racing entry, with Mike Collins, Rob Currie, Frank Goddard and Jim Goddard serving as crew.

The team had some issues with the car last year which Goddard believes are corrected, and plans to run the same combination for 2013. He is also planning to go faster.

We are going to hit it just the same this year, he said. And we are going to try and hit a six (six-second pass), he added. “I have just got to step on it harder. This thing makes wicked power.

The 2013 Quick 32 Sportsman Series gets underway May 10-11 at US 131 Motorsports Park, the first of six events this year.

The Quick 32 Sportsman Series www.Quick32.ca will compete at all these events in conjunction with its companion series, the Pro Modified Racing Association, www.PMRA.ca, and the Pro Bike & Sled Series www.PBSS.ca, providing an exciting, colorful, and complete show of the best in drag racing action.
