DSE Championship Finals Crowns NHRA National Dragster Challenge Winners as well as New Series Champions
CAYUGA, ON – The Final race weekend of the DSE Sportsman Racing Series was billed as the biggest race of the season with more cash
and trophies up for grabs than any other event during the year. For those competing for DSE Championships it was the final two points races in the series, and for those on the hunt for their First NHRA “wally” Trophy, this would be their final race in Ontario this season to get their hands on one.
Saturday’s racing program featured the NHRA National Dragster Challenge, which was awarding NHRA “Wally’s” to all the class winners. Unfortunately due to a series of Test and Tune Oil Down’s and a cooling track Saturdays Racing action was halted in Round 3 and finished Sunday Morning before the Sunday Main event racing started.
Renegade Racing Fuels Super Pro featured two Super Gas style roadsters duking it out for NHRA Hardware and prize money. Tim knight and his 1933 Ford Roadster made his way into the final to face off against Brian Cassidy in his 1957 Corvette Roadster. Knight strapped a .000 reaction time against Cassidy and held off the hard charging ’57 Corvette for a narrow .027 Margin of victory.
Performance Improvement Street Eliminator Final round saw 2012’s National Dragster Challenge winner, Jarrod Kolne facing off against Wainfleet Ontario’s own Roger Demers. Again, the starting line held the key for the race as Kolne took a commanding .015 to .092 advantage to hold off Demers for the Victory.
DSEAutomotive.ca Super Bike/Sled found two familiar faces squaring for the NHRA top prize with 2012 Super Bike/Sled Champion Pete Stewart taking on Lyle Elliot who took the victory at the first DSE Event earlier this year. Stewart had the advantage at the starting by .029. However, Elliot was able to run an 8.756 on his 8.75 dial, which helped push Stewart out the back door to a narrow .019 Breakout, thus handing the win back to Elliot.
Dilts Piston Hydraulics Modified started off with over 50 No Box style cars all looking to take home an NHRA Wally, however 5 rounds later only two would remain, one being Tony Valerio and his 1968 H/Create Motor Camaro Stocker and Robert Becker and his 1987 GT/DA Super Stock Camaro. Valerio initiated the race with a .046 reaction time, followed very closely by Becker’s .044, but it would be Becker coming out on top at the Finish line with a 9.944 on his 9.92 dial in compared to Valerio’s .049 over 10.729.
Stefko Racing Engines Super Gas had 11 competitors show up to try and take home an NHRA Wally. Corinne MacMillan of Ajax Ontario started the day off strong by taking the Pole Position in the 9.90 Super Gas field, however her day would end in round 2 against Kirk Perry with an -.009 red-light.
Similar to the other categories the Super Gas final would be run Sunday morning, and it would feature Vince Gregoire and his beautiful 1955 Chevy Bel-Air against Andrew Stirk and his 1963 Corvette Roadster. Gregoire would take the starting line advantage with a .022 compared to Stirks .043, but Stirk would nail the Index putting up a 9.900 run pushing Gregoire into a 9.885 Breakout.
HeadsUpRacer.com Frantic 14 started the weekend off with a strong field of 17 cars competing for the 14 spots. James Lichy and his Bantam altered lead the Dragster side of the ladder while Steve Corriveau and his 1967 Chevy II paced the Doorslammer field into the eliminations. Dennis Black of Toronto Ontario took the Renegade Race Fuels and Lubricants Reaction Time Qualifying challenge with a .001 light in his opening qualifier to take home a case of Renegade Race Oil.
The Big money round would see Doorslammer #1 qualifier Steve Corriveau take on Bullet Bob Jennings and his 2008 M&M Dragster. Both racers would leave with almost identical lights, but at the finish line Corriveau would use is 195 MPH top end charge to aid in pushing Jennings into a double breakout situation which Corriveau would take going under by only .009 compared to Jennings breakout of .024.
